There were multiple people in the media who chose either Josh Johnson and Brandon Morrow to with the Cy Young. Nobody thinks anyone on this team will win a cy young, We know what Buehrle and Dickey are. We hope Stroman stays the same if not improves, Hutch is a good #3 or excellent number #4 on a playoff team. What we get from Sanchez or Norris or Graveman is up in the air.

JaysRap Verified Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 I wonder if the Jays can put together a package to get Cole Hamels out of Philadelphia that won't cause the board a heart attack (and one that Amarao Jr would bite on). I think AA is going to trade and trade for a top-of-the-rotation starter like Hamels or Johnny Cueto if they don't want to go long years with John Lester.
shortstop Verified Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Aoki for many reasons - jays need grind it out types in their lineup & Aoki is one. Don't need to platoon him, great approach, great defense...and can take over the #1 spot when Reyes goes down with injury or needs a day off. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/11/free-agent-profile-nori-aoki.html rumour is he wants 3 years but for 2 years, $16M, i'd do it. I don't see Martin as a #2 in the lineup at all. Reyes Aoki JB EE DH/Martin Martin/DH Lawrie 2B Pompey
ScientificReason Verified Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Hutch pitched 184.2 innings and posted a 3.85 FIP and a 3.82 xfip. That's not so bad for a first year starter. Old guys put up numbers of mid rotation guys..not back end rotation guys. A bunch of mid level starters and a couple question marks, that is not a rotation that will get a team to the playoffs.

Near impossible to predict baseball, especially this early (its November). Def would like another top of the rotation starter, though.

kgm1 Verified Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 If we can't get Melky back at a reasonable price, I wouldn't mind Torii Hunter on a cheap one year deal. The old fart can still hit. I was thinking the same thing when looking at him on my roster and wondering why the f*** i didn't deal him for Davis. I think he would give us an 800 + ops in the AL east and be a huge improvement defensively in left.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 All seriousness though rotation is fine. Dickey and Buehrle are fine #4 pitchers who eat lots of innings and are durable. Stroman seems like a good bet to be a solid #3 with upside to be a #2. As long as Hutch stays healthy he should be a solid #3. Rotation is definitely playoff caliber especially considering how Martin should help them out. Not crazy to think Hutch and Stro would of been 3 and 4.5 Win pitchers last year with Martin behind the plate. First priority is LF and then 2b if you can. Bullpen I would look to go cheap and see if you can get some high upside/no name arms.
RIPEXPOS Verified Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Assuming there isn't enough money to land a top starter, I'd look to sign Andrew Miller and a LF like Markakis or Aoki depending. I'm worried about the bullpen. Also, I'd look to deal Navarro for more BP help. What's wrong with a Valencia/Francisco platoon at DH?
BigBounceyBlueBalls Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Well cause EE will be DH and Smoak and Mayberry will play 1st is more likely! Smoak will be our lighting in a bottle hitting 25 + HRs next year!
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 We need to trade some guys away for minor league talent, bench players, and middle relievers: Estrada: Mediocre pitcher who has had some success in the past, but is a terrible fit for RC. Still can't believe we gave up Lind for this guy. Hopefully we can get a cheap middle reliever and save 4 million. Smoak: This guy is just atrocious. WTF do we want a career .689 OPS 1st baseman, who doesn't even have a good split. There is no situation where he will be useful. Dump him and save 3 million. Navarro: Has become redundant with Martin. Should be able to trade him for a reasonable piece (#5 starter) or middle reliever. Saves 4 million. Happ: He's decent as a depth guy, but not for seven million. We need to either start him or trade him. He can still fetch something useful. Lot of teams can use him and aren't bothered by the salary. Saves 6 million. That's roughly seventeen million saved, with a few pieces coming back to us.

Redmond has done a fine job in his role, but I'd be more comfortable with 2 swing men. Smoak intrigues me, but it's probably just his prospect pedigree colouring my opinion of him. Same reason I really liked the Reimold pickup last year.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Good job Chappy , BTW, I really like Dinger,s thought on Hunter on a 1 year deal Yeah Hunter makes a good fit I think.
READERsince2006 Verified Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 im also looking forward to what smoak can bring to the table, his numbers vs lefties and righties are the same but his home numbers at Safeco are horrible, hopefully a hitter park and a deep lineup can make him our next undervalued masher EE/JB he isn't a gold glover defender but should split time with EE at 1st and DH, maybe have Valencia DH vs some lefties. not sure why some people don't have Valencia in the plans next year, lefty masher and will replace Lawrie for at least 1 DL stint next year
READERsince2006 Verified Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Hunter, Aoki, Markakis are all good options, upgrade on defence from melky for sure. Aoki and Markakis are good #2 hitters, don't k much, take walks, decent speed, hunter would be more of a 5-7 hitter i also like ichiro as a last option, him and pillar in LF would be better then pillar/dirks
GNick49 Verified Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 I Love the Martin signing. it improves the young pitching staff. What is next priority for the team?? 1. LF - Aoki would fit in this lineup for me 2. Closer - high cost for Miller?? 3. Bullpen pieces 4. 1B - I like EE as full time DH 5. Front line Starter - Lester/Shields? 6. 2B/3B - or are we done after the Gose trade? 7. Trade Dickey/Thole or Trade Navarro LF no question...Melky was a good hitter.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 Option 1: trade Happ and Navarro for bullpen help, used saved money to sign McCarthy and Aoki. Option 2: trade Happ for Saunders, Navarro for pen help, and sign one of Headley or McCarthy (whichever one is willing to sign). I really think the Jays need another starter. Do not depend on Sanchez in a year they intend on competing, even with Martin's defense/framing behind the plate.

If you do, Francisco is not the guy to bring back. He was beyond awful the last few months and hasn't proved he can hit in the majors after pitchers adjust to him. Add in the fact he would make over 2 million in arb. and he would be wasted money. Just non-tender him.
agrushcow Verified Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 I'm curious as to why people are so quick to send off Navarro, I think he still fits. $5m isn't a huge sum for what he offers, about $6m for 1 win and he'll easily provide that in a DH role. So I'd keep him, but could be swayed. I'd move Dickey and Thole to free up some salary, I'm tired of relying on a knuckleballer and his sidekick. I'd deal Happ too, for either relief help of a LF. Really still think this team's #1 need is SP, tho Martin will provide a lot of value for our starters. Guys I'd look at in the OF would probably be Rios, Markakis or Aoki, or as people have mentioned the Saunders deal. I don't like the Pillar half of our platoon so I'd rather get a righty. 2B/3B I'm probably not putting a ton more value into, unless we can't land a LF then we should target a 3B. Lester would be a dream come true but it would be a real shocker. Also down with the Miller talk, I think he's going to be a stud for at least 3 seasons and is talented enough to shell out for. Generally wouldn't say that, but big fan of his.
JFD Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 (edited) top of the rotation starter, re-sign Melky, infielder, and fix the bullpen. Edited November 18, 2014 by JFD
