JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Morrow for closer 2015 Then we can play the game of "What Injury Will He Suffer From Now!" Kidding! Kidding!
RealAccountant Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Why would this team need a closer next year. By the way things are looking this is a 70-75 win team.in 2015
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 It's a shame that Jannsen declined so much in his final contract year. He would have been in line for a big payday. Given declining velocity, a 0 war, and injury problems, a team can't invest that much in him even though he's only 32. I think an offer of 2 years/$12 million would be fair without giving the team too much risk. His arm may not be 100% this year, so we might see an uptick in velocity next year. I think players tend to get written off pretty quickly at the first decline once they're on the other side of 30, but often it's just a bad year from which they can bounce back pretty quickly.
BigCecil Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 LOL at a QO. I don't even see a two year deal happening. Personally I think they look at Sanchez as the next closer and we'll get the speil about they eventually want to move him back into the rotation . BS but that is what i think happens Sanchez has been great so far but his minor league command - BB and pitch count issues have yet to show up. Yet some people have him in the rotation or suggested as a closer already. 15 innings people. Maybe they wont show up and he will be an immaculate MLB conception but we can't count on it. We don't even know what Stroman is going to be yet really. He has been great for the most part but we have seen him blown out a few times and less LHH swings at that wipe out breaking ball.
jayswin11 Verified Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 I'm 100% for extending Melky. And I think AA will do it. Melky will get a Q offer for sure. (at least he better)
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 It's kind of sad but I'm thinking there are still some organizations out there that won't look at his advanced metrics and see that he kind of sucks now. He'll still get a pretty good pay day. Kind of like when Francisco Cordero had an xFIP of 4.14 but an ERA of 2.45 and was given 4.5 Million for his age 37 season?

Sanchez,s value may lie in the bull pen but I would have him in AAA in 2015 working on his command . Still too early to say he is a failed starter.
baubau Verified Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 I don't think Casey would even get a 2 year 14 million contract on the open market. 7 mil a year for 2 years? It wouldn't surprise me to see a team like the Tigers offer that. Not saying he is worth that but teams desperate for a bullpen arm/reliever in the past have shown to overpay. LOL at a QO. I don't even see a two year deal happening. Personally I think they look at Sanchez as the next closer and we'll get the speil about they eventually want to move him back into the rotation . BS but that is what i think happens I am not sure where Sanchez's future lies. I wouldn't be surprised if he made it as a starter not would I be surprised if he ends up being a closer/bullpen guy. He is all over the map. Though I would be shocked to see the Jays not give Sanchez a shot as a starter if nothing more than just PR/marketing reasons. I am sure they'll work him out as a starter first and if he gets destroyed will be pulled into the pen with the speil about taking pressure away from him for now, get him more comfortable and moving him back to starter down the road, etc. Sanchez has been great so far but his minor league command - BB and pitch count issues have yet to show up. Yet some people have him in the rotation or suggested as a closer already. 15 innings people. Maybe they wont show up and he will be an immaculate MLB conception but we can't count on it. Though he isn't walking as many as I had expected, there are still command issues that I've been noticing. He leaves the pitch hanging quite often and other times high. He had nearly 3 pitches in a row above the zone a few nights ago where Navarro was signing him to "keep it low". I suspect once the league adjusts to him and not chase some of his stuff, the walks will come.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Melky will get a Q offer for sure. (at least he better) Yeah, the only way he doesn't get a QO is if we extend him. I think we could see Rasmus get one as well. He's had a bad season, but the FA list at CF almost doesn't exist next year. Someone will likely pay for the home runs.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Seems that AA would be in the new wave of GM's who are not willing to pay big money for an established closer like Janssen. I think on the open market, Casey will get around 4 and 44mil, or in the vicinity (Papelbon's 14M being the ceiling). Given that price point and the fact that Beeston says payroll will go up next year (so I believe the opposite that it will in fact, go down), looks like he wont be returning to the Jays. We know that AA loves to collect compensation picks. My question is do we risk giving Casey a QO, which should be around $14mil? Do we think he would accept that on a 1-year deal? Would it seriously kill the Jays' payroll if he did? Should've moved Casey when we had the chance. Loved the Rangers haul for Soria.....sigh
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 He might accept it. Maybe they can sign him to a deal with some option years? Say what you want about the importance of relievers but there is a big hole if he leaves. Do you really want to deal someone from the minors for a reliever? Or do you sign one of the older closers in hopes of a 1-2 year deal? After Janssen, there is nobody reliable in the bullpen. When your lineup and rotation aren't meshing enough to be leading, what the f*** does a closer matter? And as the Jays roster continues to age things aren't going to get better.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Well, he's more reliable than the other crap they have. I'm guessing they'll go the route and sign a couple of "ok" guys to short term deals and hope one emerges as the closer. There are a lot of older options that would sign for 1-2 years. If you're signing older RP's you're gonna pay. Who's our 2B, CF, LF, DH next year? Priorities, my man. Stilson on the cheap.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 I'm hoping we can work out a deal with Melky. That 40th overall pick will not help us next year or the following. Unless we fluke our way to a playoff berth, what good is Melky over the next year or two?
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 I'm 100% for extending Melky. And I think AA will do it. And if we continue along the pat we're on he'll be kept until his contract is done and he's a dead asset.

Why risk keeping guys around when its clear most players aren't at their peak like in their 20's and will never be back there? You move a player when he's peaked or peaking. People gotta get off this "I'm a friend of all the Blue Jays and they better not trade anyone."
flafson Verified Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Doesn't make sense to give him more than 5mil. I love the guy but he's on a decline for a while. The only positive that he is able to still get people out with less velocity but for how long?
jayswin11 Verified Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Yeah, the only way he doesn't get a QO is if we extend him. I think we could see Rasmus get one as well. He's had a bad season, but the FA list at CF almost doesn't exist next year. Someone will likely pay for the home runs. I wonder about an offer for Rasmus as well. We'll see how he ends the season but I think if the rest of his season goes the same as the majority of it the Jays will let him walk.

Considering the subpar season and the fact Rasmus seems to like it here, it's also possible he'll return on a 1 year contract similar to what he got last year and hope for a year like he put up last year.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted August 18, 2014 Posted August 18, 2014 Why risk keeping guys around when its clear most players aren't at their peak like in their 20's and will never be back there? You move a player when he's peaked or peaking. People gotta get off this "I'm a friend of all the Blue Jays and they better not trade anyone." You can't do that with every player. Some players you really have to keep around past age 26 or 27. There's no way any team could keep replacing 2-3 players evrey year with quality young and cheap replacements. The pipeline would never be that strong. At best you might be able to do that with 1 guy every year.

I don't see any chance he's QO'd unless he hots like 15 homeruns ROS. $15 million is a huge chunk of available payroll space this offseason.

To agrees the OP, no chance in hell would I offer Janssen a QO, there literally no upside to be had from it. It's all downside. As for Rasmus... Nope. Too risky. Could he put up 5 WAR next year? Sure, but it's unlikely. He's way way too volatile. I'm fine with Gose in CF and spend elsewhere.

Craig Gentry's skill set would be perfect.

For the money, speed and D you have to go with Gose and sit him against really tough LHP. I was hoping for continued advancement from Colby but he is 2012 and continued regression on D imo. NO WAY on QO. He would take that all day long and we can use the payroll room.

It's too late for Colby to salvage the season enough to be worth a QO. He gone. Gose @ 500k is fine as long as we have bats in left and right.

If Rasmus is on this team next year I will be very pissed . He should have been moved last offseason when his value peaked and we had no money and needed pitching

Casey gets a lot of flak but he's been nothing but solid over the last few years barring a few injury woes and the odd bit of rust sprinkled in. He'd be good to re-sign on a 2yr contract in the ballpark of 16-18M.
