All those things are wrapped into what Steamer tries to tell us: 4.04 FIP ROS, 4.26 ERA ROS. Those seem pretty reasonable, no?

Yes, but looking at it from that perspective, JA Happ's info from Steamer the rest of the way is a 4.51 ERA and a 4.59 FIP. Factoring in that McCarthy hasn't had a fully healthy season in the past few years, JA Happ seems to be equal to him or just slightly worse. McCarthy is not the upgrade we are looking for and acquiring him would be just a hit on our payroll if anything.

Half a point of FIP? I'm hardly an expert but that seems like a pretty significant difference.

Half a run per 9 over half a season is not that insignificant...It's like half a win.

Plus, the conversation isn't just Happ vs McCarthy. Someone else in the rotation will inevitably get hurt in some capacity. This adds to the currently non-existent depth. Jenkins, Nolin, Sanchez, whoever from AAA are all replacement level options at this point.

I wasn't one to go crazy about McCarthy going forward, but given the low acquisition cost, it was a move that would have helped. Who knows with Towers though. He might think Nuno > Norris or something.

I was factoring the fact if McCarthy's arm decides to die in August or something

Meh you have a point, but isn't Morrow due to be back soon? That will push Happ into that depth position soon. The biggest thing I was looking at when I saw McCarthy is how much he's owed, and I know Arizona is paying a portion if his salary, but I was under the impression that the payroll has heavy constraints atm

that something is he's not good lol.

i know the advanced stats argument but i disagree. He has a nice k:bb but leaves way too many pitches over the plate. He is better than his era but he's still bad imo.

thank goodness we didn't go after this scrub. Let the yanks have him - this is a nothing move other than he's a below average pitcher who's a bit better than nuno.

this. If you think mccarthy is going to come to the al east and be the key for this team to take it to the next level that's absurd. Mccarthy would be about as marginal of an upgrade as you could get and even that is questionable. The yankees had a bigger need for pitching so even a guy like mccarthy is considered an upgrade for them, as sad as that is.

well nuno did pitch almost 100 innings in the toughest baseball market. Clearly the kid can't cut it. Nuno has a decent chance to develop and he's controllable for many years at next to nothing. Mccarthy has a just under a half a season left on his contract and he has a career xfip and fip over 4.

Mccarthy has a career xfip over 4 pitching in the national league where the pitcher gets to bat. He's nothing special. He's a mid rotation guy at best with 75 games left on his contract. The yankees didn't steal s***...

I must admit, i know there was stuff said by likes of Dave Cameron and co saying McCarty had been really unlucky and he was nowhere near as bad as his stats suggested. But i really didnt expect him to be this good for NYY

CG SO, 8 K's, no walks. Yeah...he bad.

It was against the Astros; though nonetheless he's still a good pitcher.

BTW Solarte is hitting much better than Headley, but fwar wise Headley > Solarte

But factoring in control..yankees lose

Yankees can just go out and buy more players in the offseason. I don't think they will be worried about giving up control of Solarte.

"The cost in prospects was too high, it didn't come down to money"

But...But.... Wilner says they wanted Stroman, Sanchez, and Hutchison for McCarthy.

LOL. The sad thing is even though I'm really sure he didn't say that I can't be sure because its Wilner.

McCarthy has always been a great pitcher when healthy. I'm not sure his spike in K/9 is sustainable, though he's a solid pitcher nonetheless. I've always been a fan.
