TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Why would someone do that? To choose their team? some of these guys would be getting Cuban money (Puig, Soler etc) if they were free agents.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 some of these guys would be getting Cuban money (Puig, Soler etc) if they were free agents. JD Drew wanted to do it, right?
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 They can sue MLB for suppressing their earnings, arguing that baseball's anti-trust exemption is unconstitutional and that the draft is a violation of their rights. But that would take a long time and would sacrifice a good portion of the player's career, so it's not worth it. Suck it up and wait for six-year free agency.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Yeah. I don't think we will save big money in Hoffman and Pentecost That's quite a bit under slot for just a bit of shoulder problems, we're going to get a good deal on Hoffman.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Question. If a player commits to college and sends a letter to all teams asking them not to draft him; and they oblige. Can the player then change his mind and declare themselves a free agent? I'm not sure. I mean, every year there's unsigned players that were eligible for the draft that don't get drafted and become free agents, but I'm not sure if that applies to high school age kids.

Any team can sign them, but they are still subject to the bonus pool system until the following draft.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 JD Drew wanted to do it, right? he wasn't a high school guy but yes they thought if he didn't sign as a Junior (he was drafted 2nd by the Phillies and never got close to an agreement) that he could play independent ball for a year and be a FA. MLB told him he'd be eligible for one more draft. I'm quite sure that for a high school kid to attempt to be an FA they'd have to not sign for 4 drafts. Matt Harrington had to go through 4 drafts before signing with Costco for $11.50 an hour

I would like to come up with a list of players who turned down big money only to flame out when going to college. I was thinking about posting this from Keith Law's twitter. I'm a retard, so I have no clue how to post tweets. Connor Barron also turned down a seven figure offer in 2011. He hit .246 this spring and wasn't drafted. Replied to 0 times keithlaw @keithlaw · 13h Karsten Whitson, Brett Austin, and DeAndre Smelter all could have had $1M+ in 2011 and didn't sign. Austin might get half. Other two get zip
TwistedLogic Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2014 Author Posted June 11, 2014 I love how people keep on with the jokes about Harrington making $11.50 an hour at Costco, when the guy still ended up a multi-millionaire by putting in a claim on his insurance and subsequently suing his agent. The guy likes his job and is at peace with his life, I don't see the need to constantly ridicule and mock him.

But I don't think he became a multimillionaire..... and I don't think he's one bit at peace with what happened.

It's already documented and written about. What you think won't change that.

Does it really need to be stated that it doesn't matter what you, I or anyone on here thinks about Matt Harrington? If it is documented that he became a multimillionaire, show me. I recall his arm being insured for 1 million.... and a settled suit with his former agent. He couldn't have had too many millions, he's changing tires at Costco.

I'm not taking time at 2:40 am to find articles that have already been posted to settle some arbitrary debate about the word "multi". The point is, he received insurance and settled a suit and became a millionaire, something of which I doubt there are many of on this forum. Now that that fact has been established and you've acknowledged it, I don't really care what your feelings are on the matter beyond that. It doesn't matter if it was one million or multi millions, the keyword here is "million". People can make smug jokes all they want about where the guy works, he still has (had?) more money than they, or I, for that matter, will probably ever make.

Qwerty Verified Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Any team can sign them, but they are still subject to the bonus pool system until the following draft. This is what i thought. So in reality there would be no benefit to the player unless he wanted to choose his team.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Yeah. I don't think we will save big money in Hoffman and Pentecost And I don't imagine AA expected to. He needs to get them both signed.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 And I don't imagine AA expected to. He needs to get them both signed. Beede (Stroman) and Bickford (Pentecost) was enough.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 The Blue Jays have agreed to terms with third-rounder Nick Wells, reports Tariq Lee of the Washington Post (h/t to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun). Wells, a Virginia high school lefty who had been committed to the College of Charleston, will receive the full slot value of the 83rd overall pick ($661.8K). He landed at 119th on Baseball America’s list of the top available prospects.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Beede (Stroman) and Bickford (Pentecost) was enough. Do we think we ended up with the better player in both instances? Too early to know for sure of course. What do the prospect expert think though?

jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Beede > Stroman Bickford ceiling > Pente Disagree. Stroman is superior prospect. Bickford ceiling maybe higher, the chances he reaches that ceiling is small. Pentecost is likely to have a bigger impact on a MLB team. I would rather have Pentecost and Stroman on the Jays rather then Beede and Bickford right now. It's not even close either.
Pulk_Pull Verified Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Beede and Stroman are a push right now. The fact Stroman has made an impact at the MLB level negates any 'ceiling' Beede might have. Could be a different story in a few years, but for now I call the first a push. Bickford and Pentecost follow a similar pattern. Bickford's ceiling is greater but Pentecost is more projectable right now. Again... a push that will take years to see the true value of each player. In both scenarios, you could make arguments for one over the other, and vice versa. Personally, I think the Jays did well and much prefer the precedent they set (i.e., we are not going to ruin our entire draft to pay you way overslot as a HS pitcher) over the alternative.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Disagree on Beede and Stroman. But you never know until you see how plays out over the next 10 years. And Bickford does have a higher ceiling but that doesn't mean he will have a better career. Finding catchers that can both hit and catch are rare and Pentecost can be that guy we made a really good pick. Bickford had a pretty good freshman season at Cal State Fullerton. He came out of the pen a lot though. Disagree. You will change your mind when Beede start working with a professional coach and be in the top-10 of the best prospects lists. Beede is a really good pitching prospect; wait and see.

Chappy Community Moderator Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 Beede has the higher ceiling, but Stroman is already in a big league rotation.
