Wasn't going to make this thread until at least a few weeks into June, but I guess we can get a headstart after this tweet:

You can use this thread to discuss anything and everything relating to rumors, trades, or your own speculation relating to the July 31st annual trading deadline.

There were reports about trading their compensation draft pick. Maybe the idea is to give us shark plus pick for some big package.

Bob Elliot tweets at 1:00 am.

I don't think I'm too out of line when I don't take to heart his drunken tweets and rumours at this lonely hour.

After listening to AA today, he seems intent on keeping Stroman up here, and in the rotation. A package centered around Sanchez and other prospects not named Norris may be worthwhile.

How come you can trade picks now? Anyone know what the rules are regarding trading picks? I'd give one of our first rounders for Shark if it is allowable.

only competitive balance picks can be traded. The Jays don't have one.

If we could get a trade done for Samardzija where we keep Stroman, Hutchison, Norris and Nay, I would be really really pleased. I have no problem giving up Sanchez and a few others in that deal, and maybe I'm being selfish, but I wouldn't give up any of the four I mentioned.

You still can't trade regular draft picks, but every year the MLB holds a small lottery designed to award "competitive balance" picks to small market / low revenue teams. Those twelve picks (6 are awarded for after the first round, and another 6 for after the second round) are the only ones in the draft that can be traded. The Jays will never get one of those picks though, due to being in a massive market.

If it's relating to the draft, which it very well could be, the deal will have to get done very quickly. Getting cautiously excited at the idea of it. I always felt that if you're going to make the painful payment on a rental player, get him as soon as you can, so you can make it matter most.

Beeston says that attendance figures and dollars will not be a significant factor at the trade deadline -- the only thing that matters is wins:

Attendance dwindles while Jays soar

The club entered June alone in first place in the American League East for the first time since 1992 and has been the hottest team in baseball for a month, winning games with the electrifying speed of Reyes and the thumping power of record-setting Edwin Encarnacion at the plate, while Mark Buehrle earned his MLB leading 10th win on Sunday. But for all of that the Blue Jays average attendance for their just finished 10-game home stand was 25,456, with the only sellout coming a week ago Sunday.

Twenty years of mediocre-to-bad baseball has given fans in Toronto a pass. Failing to fill the Rogers Centre on a regular basis over the years was easy to explain away: the 1994 strike alienated fans in the first place and the team has never been quite good enough to bring them back.

Now the test comes, and it comes with a catch: Is Toronto a baseball town or not? And will passing that test dictate the shape of the roster as the season moves along?

Yes and no, says Blue Jays president Paul Beeston:

“Absolutely demand is picking up. I’m disappointed where we’re at but we’re better off now than we were two weeks ago and we’re better off than now than we were two years ago.”

Beeston also said that the club’s attendance figures won’t be the arbiter of any roster improvements that general manager Alex Anthopoulos may contemplate going forward.

“There’s no magic number for attendance,” Beeston said. “If there’s a deal it’s not going to be money that determines if it’s going to be done, it’s going to be wins. If we’re winning we’ll do it. I hope we have that opportunity.”

Anyone know what the Jays plan to do with Morrow, Santos, or Rasmus? Maybe we could package one or two of them in a deal before the deadline.

All 3 would be welcome additions. Morrow over Happ. Santos over Jenkins. Rasmus over Gose/Pillar. None would fetch anything interesting in return, IMO. Morrow and Santos are often injured and Rasmus is a FA in the off season.

I think the Jays would be better off with the reinforcement they would provide. I have to mention that I have strong doubts that either Morrow and/or Santos pitch again for the Blue Jays, I suspect they're done for the year.

Rasmus would be a very good fit for the Tigers, that right now have Rajai Davis in left field. They also need a left handed bat with power badly, and their lineup falls of the map.

Tigers also have an amazing pitching stuff. Not saying that there is a definite match there, but its the kind of deal that AA needs to explore

Philly is going to be a very interesting team to watch .....

They have some pieces that could really put us over the top ....

Cliff Lee, Chase Utley, Carlos Ruiz, Jonathon Papelbon

They may be a bit easier for us to get a deal done with as well if they Jays Ownership is willing to take on these big salaries.

You are forgetting who runs that team. No way Amaro deals anyone at the deadline. He is an idiot

I suspect he will either be forced to by ownership, or fired and the new guy will do it

Their situation is completely untenable

Jays are championship contenders. Its time to go all in, without trading roster players. They need to acquire Shields even if it means giving up Sanchez

That's a tough one

I want Shields. In fact, he's the guy I want the most. But he's a straight up rental for only 3 months. I hate to give up anything but a couple guys among positional player prospects/depth for him. But a guy like Sanchez is probably exactly what they want. Will they settle for less? Probably not. All depends on what others are offering I suppose. And if they can't get a prospect they really like, they'll just qualify him and collect the draft pick.

Presuming he does become a free agent this off season, and especially if he's traded mid season and won't be subject to a QO, I want AA all over him. Would he take more than Anibal Sanchez money (5/80) to sign?? The two guys seem remarkably similar quality wise. Shields is 2 years older but GM's probably value Shields' post-season reputation more, rightly or wrongly.

Googled James Shields. Found this. Makes me want him even more. LOL

The Rangers really f***ed us by setting a really high precedent for a rental pitcher in a market where there's an extra wild card. With so many extra team's having a shot it really drives up the price. Especially for a team like KC who likely won't be SO far out of it like the Cubs, Astro's or Rays (heh). For them to justify to their fans selling off Shields and ultimately giving up on there season and draft pick a team is going to have to massively overpay.

Except Shields had over a year of control last time he got traded. Now he has 3 months or so of team control. So the package will have to be less. I would rather give less up to get Shields than overpay for Shark/Price for only 1 extra year.

I said the Rangers as in the Matt Garza trade last year - Mike Olt, C.J Edwards, Justim Grimm and a couple others for a few months of Garza.

= bad bad precedent

Agreed on all counts. Rangers overpaid and set a bad precedent. I also agree on KC likely not being so far out of the WC race to give up on the season. They can qualify him and either get him back or get a draft pick.

People forget to take into account what the 2nd WC has done for competitiveness. KC is 2.5 behind and even the Rays are "only" 8 games out. In the NL, the D-Backs are 7 out.

So did Pat Gillick and Paul Beeston when they traded for David Cone

Crap, I forgot how much they gave up. Wow.

I disagree about Morrow. Happ > Morrow. No thanks to Morrow and his 4 inning starts and every second start is a disaster. Morrow is dead to me. Move on.

Yep feel the same way. I can do without ever seeing Morrow pitch again this year. Happ is not doing great but he is doing okay.

I don't want Morrow in the bullpen either. Going forward I want veterans added to the bullpen.

Jays have a chance at the world series

I think that if we make the playoffs we have an offense just as good as the tigers if not better but our pitching doesn't stack up. I'd go price first but I'd go shields too. I'd want price and shields before I'd want shark

winning a world series is special. At the time of the trade Kent had played 65 games. Sure he was a promising young player, but you didn't know exactly what you had. Cone came in and posted a 2.55 ERA the rest of the season with the Jays and the Jays won 3 of the 4 playoff games Cone started and won both of the world series games he started. Without Cone they may not have won the world series. Winning a world series trumps everything.

Kent posted a .770ish OPS in his years with the Mets. He didn't start posting hall of fame numbers until he was 30 to 39. If we had not made the trade the jays would have had a good young player developing who would have posted a .770ish OPS and then left via free agency. Those are definitely good numbers, but not hall of fame numbers. Those numbers would not have been the difference in the Jays making the playoffs from 94 to 99. We didn't trade a hall of famer for a rental. We traded a young player for a stud pitcher that quite likely put us over the top and gave us our first world series. Kent didn't become a hall of famer until his later years and he wouldn't have been a Jay anyways. The mets never made the post season with Kent in their lineup.
