z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Probably when he stops hitting dingers.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 So annoying I know what you mean No one is giving him anything to hit. What's he supposed to do, flail at pitches a foot outside? Keep the walks coming, JB. Once Edwin heats up they'll have to start coming after you.

z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 I know it's hard to understand for some people but: BB > chance of value from hitting for any player ever Even Barry that one season that all he did was take walks and hit dingers?
NorthOf49 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Once he stops hitting dingers. He's leading the AL in them at the moment so there's no beef.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Barry's max wOBA: .544 (with uBB included), wOBA from a BB: .692 IBB and pitching around players is dumb! Well, hopefully they keep doing it to Bautista, and EE and Lind start racking up the RBIz.

He has a MLB high BB percentage of 28.6%. Hopefully he keeps the walks coming. Brandon Phillips had 100 rbis with 70 rbi numbers. Jay Bruce had a few extra rbis. It is obvious that Votto was in the middle of a lot of this. What is so difficult about this for some people?? Choo walk. Votto walk. wild pitch. Phillips ground ball. Choo single. Votto ground rule double. Bruce sac fly. s*** like this happened a tonne I am sure.
Brenner Verified Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Edwin might be the better hitter once he's out of his funk (which he might be already) and will make em pay. I'll take nothing but Dingerz and Walks all day from Joey Bats at the clip he does it.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Just checked and Bautista is on track for 135 runs and 110 rbis anyway. If any body complains then they should be shot on sight.

jaysfan2014 Old-Timey Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Still surprising Bautista hasn't gotten the Barry Bonds treatment yet (frequently being walked). Also, despite the Jays offensive struggles, Bautista's 3rd in runs scored (11), behind Dozier and Eaton. Imagine what runs he'd have if the offense started waking up, like yesterday's game.
Flamingweazel Verified Member Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 What I hate is how the media seems to not give JB the respect he deserves. Outside of Cabrera, and maybe trout bautista is probably the best hitter in the game right now, you would not know it from the lack of attention he gets. I guess that's the downside of playing in TO, but that should not matter to anyone who knows anything about baseball.

He's gotten a pretty fair amount of attention from the media over the past few years. Any casual fan will know him as the guy who can hit 40+ HR and hits .250
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Ed needs to go on a tear and this conversation can f*** off. until Ed hits, Jose is not going to see many good pitches. he's crushed some mistakes and that's going to make teams want to pitch him even more selectively. Ed needs to get his thumb out and go!

Ed needs to get his thumb out and go! Lindy has a .450 obp. Eddie is starting to hit. When Reyes comes back Friday and you have Melky hitting the way he's hitting in the 2 hole, simply walking bautista with Eddie and lind behind him and one or both of reyes and melky on in front of him will not be an great option either...this team is going to be scary pretty soon.
Cooler Heads Prevail Verified Member Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 That would make me a very happy child if he did. He's 33 years old though, I don't know if he has any more elite seasons left in him. I guess we'll have to see. 33 years old. You really need to do more research. Just for kicks why don't you look at what Dave Winfield and Paul Molitor achieved in their late 30s. MVP votes for Winfield at age 40 and Molitor at age 39.
HASHTAGYOLOSWAG Verified Member Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 As long as people behind him are hitting, it is great.

Flamingweazel Verified Member Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 He's not even the top hitter on his own team.. Sure bud whatever you say man. He is the best on this team easily, only thing slowed him down was injuries. You dont see teams pitching around anyone else on the team like JB for a reason.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 33 years old. You really need to do more research. Just for kicks why don't you look at what Dave Winfield and Paul Molitor achieved in their late 30s. MVP votes for Winfield at age 40 and Molitor at age 39. Molitor and Winfield peaked at around 30. But they held on for a long time and were still very good (and importantly healhty) at 39/40. Bautista has more than likely seen his best year or two... however your point still stands. Bautista's peak was huge, 160 and 180 ops+. Age will bring him down a bit, but that he could still be elite. I am more worried about injuries. I don't know if he will be healthy, but if healthy he could win a couple more homer crowns. That would be fun.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 Yes A soft yes. EE is younger, better health and performance recently, and has the freaky low strikeout rate. Bautista has better peak years, and slightly better career numbers.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 But yeah, DAMN you Jose Bautista and your 1.071 OPS and 201 wRC+ so far this year
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 Both Steamer AND ZiPS support the claim: I suspect Bautista is so unnussual he is revealing some flaw or bug in the system. It doesn't seem to me that Bautista is better then Votto. Yet the system has Votto in between EE and Bautista. The claim that EE is better for 2014 is not unreasonable. I would agree that Bautista is better for 2014, but I don't feel stronly one way or the other. .850 OPS 33 year old - last 2 seasons average 100 games ~.850 OPS. .825 OPS 31 year old (low k rate) - last 2 seasons 150 games ~.900 OPS. Nothing there that says one is "obviously" better then the other. Prediction software or any software ain't perfect. IE Heartbleed.
AdamGreenwood Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 "IBB and pitching around players is dumb!" Depends on the situation. How many outs? How good is the hitter up to bat vs the pitcher? How good is the next hitter coming up vs the pitcher? Obviously, there are times when an intentional walk is absolutely the right call. Runners on second and third. Two out. Pitcher on deck.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 Zaun and McCown will be all over him in no time. McCown and Cox will for sure on PTS.

That's not true in certain situations. Say tonight we're tied in the bottom of the 9th, guys on 2nd and 3rd and Santos pitching. Joe Mauer is up with a righty on deck, we'd be stupid not to walk him.
