Zaun was saying Posey chose to be a catcher, if the Giants can't live without his bat they should move him to a different position. Being a catcher and blocking the plate is a good way to contribute when you're not hitting well.

He has a point. It's been around forever and now they want to change it? He claims that if Josh Thole or Jose Molina got hurt and not Posey, they wouldn't even have changed the rule.

What an idiotic comment. Catchers get blown out knees and concussions all the time from collisions, it's not just Buster Posey... or Carlos Santana... or Yasmani Grandal.

They're all marketing it as the 'Posey' rule though, I think that's his point

Wondering if they will go to the double first base like softball, cause that will be the next area for collisions, then it will be the double play break-up slides guys do.

Its been around for years, why is it an issue now? catchers have broken legs before and the rule stayed the same, why now?

Not a huge fan of the rule as it is worded but really, runners shouldn't be laying out catchers if there is a path to the plate. If its completely blocked, drill him. That's my opinion anyway.

I like that the rules will prevent unnecessary collisions, but I think that catchers should have the option to block the plate in key situations. Seeing which players are willing to step up and put their body on the line for a win is a part of sports that I enjoy. It's like blocking shots in hockey, going the extra mile for your teammates.

I'm not going to criticize those with a different opinion, player safety is also important. It's just what I enjoy watching.

I agree that Posey getting hurt was what spurred the change. However, that doesn't mean it's a bad change. Once enacted the rule is going to protect all Catchers, not just the stars.

This argument has some logic and sense.

Now the catcher's defense pass from +12.5 runs to +10 runs :); catchers like: Thole, Kratz, AJ Jimenez have slightly less value.

Slavery had been around for millennia, why did it suddenly become an issue? Millions of people died to it, but it remained, why get rid of it now?

I can't stand the "it's been this way for years" mentality. I've gone through this argument with people in football, hockey and even other baseball arguments. I'd just kick Zaun in the groin and say that no one will care as his groin region is essentially the JPA of groins.

They can still block the plate, they just can't do it without the ball. It's a very reasonable change. It won't eliminate collisions entirely but it will eliminate the completely unnecesary ones.

Then again, while I find home plate collisions completely silly and superfluous, apparently my pitching past has made me a hypocrite, as I have high regard for using a good plunking as a governing measure. Nothing like drilling a fastball into the ribs of some punk-ass smack-talker and then waiting for him to make a move to the mound so you can rear-naked choke him out. Pretty sure I would do that, first pitch, every time Lawrie came to the plate. He has a neon sign over his head which reads "I want to be beaten."

Eh, personal opinion obviously, but I much prefer giving it a little extra oomph and just trying to K the guy, or in other sports just one upping them in whatever way you please. Like nailing a jumper on some s*** talker's head. I find the "oooooooohs" from the crowd and talking s*** back preferable to hurting the guy. Then again, I punched a guy my last basketball game so what do I know lol.

in an era where we all want judgement calls taken out of the game, this adds a new one and will just be one more thing to argue over.

I agree with Zaun. If you can't handle getting hit, you can't handle baseball.

In fact, baseball took a downturn in 1877, when some cowards started wearing masks.

Prior to that, the padded glove was the mark of the coward.

If Zaun and I had our way, catchers would be catching the ball barehanded with no protective equipment. That's what real men do.

Exactly. I'm sure all these arguments were put forth back when batting helmets came out and the warning track was mandated. We take those safety measures as just part of the game because we grew up not knowing any different. It's just because this change is happening in the midst of our fandom that it's a big deal for some.

I like the change, but really, if you're going to do a rule change as a test, why not try it in the minors first and see how it goes so you can adjust any obvious flaws before you put it in the majors?

This the first thing you've ever said that I agree with. Love the snark too. Grade A
