eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Maybe Ubaldo said he didn't want to come here? Bigger question is whether I want him to do well or play crappy next year. Read the thread. We didn't even make an offer on him.
SAAviour Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Did all you pathetic AA apologists who are now claiming that "We have enough pitching" forget how the fat f*** himself identified acquiring starting pitching as the number one priority??? "We're going to earmark most of our money for starting pitching," said Anthopoulos. http://www.tsn.ca/mlb/teams/story/?id=437426&hubname=mlb-blue_jays I am one of those pathetic apologists. I didn't bother reading the link u provided but if I recall correctly I believe he said he is targeting 2 starting pitchers in order to compete.

They didn't spend on anything besides a part time catcher.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 We go from hating Happ as our 5th starter last year when we were going for it, to a lock as 4th this year. That says a lot. Many were excited last year because they thought RR would bounce back enough to be the 5th starter thus making Happ the 6th starter. Many expected Happ to be in AAA and thought that AA gave him the extension so that he would accept pitching every 5th day for Buffalo.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Read the thread. We didn't even make an offer on him. This night is getting worse.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 so our rotation looks something like: 2/3 3 3, arm likely to fall off 5 5 Happ is barely a 5. Might as well pencil Luis f***ing Perez into the rotation.
BlueJaysGirl Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I think Sierra's bat will surprise some people this year and if Gose can hit .250 with plus defense I'll be satisfied. This is exactly how I feel. We're in the minority though, by a lot.
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 We just need Dickey, Morrow, Lawrie, Izturis, Goins, Melky, Gose, Happ to improve on last year. And big comebacks from Hutchison, Drabek, And the following to have a full healthy season: McGowan, Santos, Bautista, Reyes With Stroman winning ROY. Simple
Convo Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 This is exactly how I feel. We're in the minority though, by a lot. That's because Sierra is a career <.750 OPS hitter in the minors.. not a lot of room for potential with the bat there. And it's not like he's showing any signs of self-discipline...

Brenner Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 so our rotation looks something like: 2/3 3 3, arm likely to fall off 5 5 I would say Dickey and Morrow are both 2/3's if healthy. But I don't view MB as a 3 at all, he is a solid 4. So we have: 2 or 3 2 or 3 4 5 5 This is clearly a below average starting rotation and its not even close to average. Is it better than even 5 other rotations? I don't see how the Jays can seriously hope to contend for playoffs with that rotation. I guess the only hope is we have an extremely luck season where everyone pitches above their heads and one of the young guys emerges (Stroman, Hutch, Drabek) or a surprise like McGowan or Romero. A miracle come back from McGowan/Romero and a RoY type season from a young guy and we'll be good... I wont hold my breath waiting for this to happen.
fireballW Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Wow. No. Ubaldo 2010-2012: 9.9 fWAR, 7.5 RA9-WAR, xFIP-'s of 90, 95, 121 Happ 2010-2012: 2.9 fWAR, 1 RA9-WAR, xFIP-'s 116, 119, 99 Ubaldo accumulated 170.7% of Happ's career fWAR from 2010-2012; in other words, he outproduced Happ's entire career by 4.1 fWAR, roughly a full Jose Fernandez, in the span of just 3 years. Too bad for your that I meant the 2 years prior and typo'ed so in your face.
fireballW Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 His control was better to a point beyond "luck" or "small sample size". He walked 6 guys in over 40 innings in the minors, which is a Halladay-esque turnaround. Halladay walked just under a guy per strikeout for multiple years, just like Drabek. Both pitchers were not known for great command, but not overly wild as young prospects, both prospects became very wild. Halladay fixed it. Drabek is not Halladay but sample size be damned, you cannot ignore only 6 walks in 40+ innings. Drabek has what it takes, but granted he needs a couple good early performances in the MLB to get his confidence. I would bet he is ready to go this year. I can understand why others are more skeptical though.

Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Here I thought this organization hit rock bottom when we sent Jo-Jo Reyes out on a regular basis. I can't believe we're going into the season with such little starting depth. If we get any kind of injuries we are completely f***ed. Imagine Dickey + Morrow go to the DL? No depth whatsoever.
RIPEXPOS Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 My excitement level for next season is zero. We're a 5th place team that didn't improve itself. We also have a top 10 payroll and a veteran roster. Turrible.

Nothing wrong with our SP depth atm, it's the lack of an additional top of the rotation guy that is an issue.
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I'd love to be a fly on the wall in the team's marketing department to see how they plan on selling tickets to this shitshow. Just to recap: - We were in last place last year and the laughingstock of the MLB - 20 years of no playoffs - AA gutted the farm and can't sign our draft picks, so we have no future - We have a top ten payroll invested in an old, flawed, and shallow team - AA sat and twiddled this thumbs all offseason while the rest of the division got better - AA lied about signing a starter when in reality, he hasn't even offered anyone - AA has managed to even piss off the "dingerzzz-and-ribbies" casual crowd with this wet fart of an offseason There's really no annoying song Metric can write this year that can polish this turd of a franchise, so how exactly are they going to sell tickets?

Key22 Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 This is not to defend AA but a long long while back on one of those interviews he did let it slip that when looking to acquire free agents they factor in things like price and the "the player's make-up." As soon as he said that I had a small "he's not going to bother going for Ubaldo then" moment. I tried to ignore it because the Jays rotation looks so atrocious that I figured he would get desperate and sign the guy anyway. The people who were on AA's case for making all the moves should in theory be happy that the Jays are standing pat. AA is not throwing good money and talent after bad. I was on his side somewhat when he made the moves - I at least understood the theory behind it. It's so tough to have a core line-up with massive 3/4 hitters at the same time and solid pen and what looked to be weakness in Boston and New York. So they took a shot. Last year's results puts us in a holding pattern of sorts. We have to let the team play as it was built. Realistically, as much as I initially wanted Jiminez out of the free agent pool, once the Yankees, a better team than us, got Tanaka then Jiminez is somewhat of a waste of time. A better team signs a better pitcher - us throwing money at a worse pitcher is going to help us catch the Yankees how? If we played to expectations last season then Jiminez might be a good fit but we need to establish that the current team is anywhere near those Vegas odds maker predictors. If Jiminez is the headcase people seem to think he is and a guy who pitches well in contract years then maybe he's not the guy. And of course there is still a chance at Santana - who at first I hated compared to Jiminez but the Bleacherreport suggest a few positives in favor of Santana that could actually make him a better pitcher in the AL East. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1941566-is-ubaldo-jimenez-or-ervin-santana-a-better-fit-for-blue-jays
Chappy Community Moderator Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 At least on the bright side we will be seeing plenty of Stroman and Hutch this season, maybe some of Nolin as well.
