Santos Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 It doesn't make sense when you consider how much of a wildcard Morrow is. There's a reasonable chance that 3 spots will need to be filled with kids + Happ, which is the problem. Ohhh i know...it could all go so terribly wrong and naturally as a Jays fan i anticipate that it will. Im just grasping straws here guys to try and understand why the f*** he didnt sign Ubaldo?!?!?!?
The_DH Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 At least were getting grass! I guess that's suppose to make us happy. Only if it can be smoked. Maybe Rob Ford needs to take over.
Santos Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Is it really that hard to comprehend the fact that during a contention "window" (where you're spending north of $130M) the last thing you want to do is experiment with unproven talent??????? I agree lol Im not arguing any of this...im just trying to come up with reasons why they wouldnt have filled these holes
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Im with most that say they want nothing to do with Ervin Santana. When there is a fair chance that Drew Hutchinson or Marcus Stroman could be better then him next year it means you should probably stay away....But that's the thing here..I look at the Jays stable of arms and i see potential in Stroman, Hutchinson and even Drabek. Lets not forget about Dustin McGowan either. Although I highly doubt he will ever receover, Ricky Romero also remains a name to watch. Dont get me wrong...Im not arguing that the Jays are going to win this year because of these arms cause quite frankly that's unlikely. But is it soo crazy to think 1 or 2 of the names i just mentioned could out pitch Ubaldo Jimenez? What about Ervin Santana? What could be a big factor in all of this that no one is recognizing is the 2014 Pitching Free Agent Class HOMER BAILEY MAX SCHERZER JON LESTER JUSTIN MASTERSON JAMES SHIELDS All 5 of those names are substantially better pitchers then both Jimenez and Santana. If AA's thinking is lets see what we have in our kids in 2014 and if they falter go big in the deeper FA class...could you really blame him? Im pissed to lose out on Jimenez aswell..That is an affordable contract...But perhaps Year 2 of this 5 Year championship window will be the most important in seeing what the future beholds. You're talking as if we have young batters. Our sluggers are old bro, they're going to start to age and it's not like we have more batters coming out of the tank
The_DH Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I agree lol Im not arguing any of this...im just trying to come up with reasons why they wouldnt have filled these holes Simple: no idea what they were doing last year and not allowed to spend this year.
Lawrie22 Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 If AA seriously doesn't sign either Santana or Jimenez or doesn't spend money any where else than the move to let JJ go has to come in to serious consideration. He was the main target in the marlins trade and than a year later you let him walk instead of giving him one more year, especially when you intend to replace him with no one!
Santos Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I really dislike that greek f*** right now And on the point earlier where someone said its all Beeston...i disagree I get the sense its all AA..guy is obsessed with this perception of value f***ing hate him

Letting Johnson walk only made sense if you used the $ somewhere else.
fireballW Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I agree lol Im not arguing any of this...im just trying to come up with reasons why they wouldnt have filled these holes I'm just going to go way out on a limb and say it. We have enough pitching right now and don't need Ubaldo. Drabek, Hutch and Stroman are all legitimate, MLB caliber pitchers right now. Redmond and McGowan are nice backups. Actually believe Happ should not even make the team as a fifth starter and should be depth. Drabek is ready to break out now. Dickey Morrow Buerhle (sp?) Stroman Hutchinson with: McGowan, Drabek, Redmond all on deck and long shots like Romero, Sanchez, Rogers further down is enough. Jimenez... could be nice but the three years prior to last season he hardly even out-pitched Happ. There is no reason to blame AA for not wanting to commit 48 million to him (not that anyone here actually knows any details about what happened anyway). The problem with our rotations are more than none of them have really exceeded expectations since Walker got here (like they did constantly under Arnsberg). The most annoying thing this offseason is not getting rid of Walker in my opinion. The guys on our depth chart are all upside guys now though. People are too used to having guys like Wang as the 6th option that they are realizing that isn't the case this year finally.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 I actually believe AA when he says the money is there if he asks for it, but clearly he is very rarely asking for it. f*** you Annibal Sanchez. Seriously.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Jimenez... could be nice but the three years prior to last season he hardly even out-pitched Happ. Wow. No. Ubaldo 2010-2012: 9.9 fWAR, 7.5 RA9-WAR, xFIP-'s of 90, 95, 121 Happ 2010-2012: 2.9 fWAR, 1 RA9-WAR, xFIP-'s 116, 119, 99 Ubaldo accumulated 170.7% of Happ's career fWAR from 2010-2012; in other words, he outproduced Happ's entire career by 4.1 fWAR, roughly a full Jose Fernandez, in the span of just 3 years.
Santos Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Got the feeling Stroman could be a top rookie with the Jays this season and Hutch could very well out pitch Mark Buerhle...the depth is 100% there. Obviously having that stud at the top of the rotation and bumping everyone down a spot would be ideal...Ubaldo was not that guy though
vic city Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I like our depth too. We've had so many injuries over the years, you just have to think we'll catch a break with one of these guys and they'll turn into a middle rotation starter. There's just too much talent in that group to not have one break through. Having said that, I'm tired of going into spring training with a bunch of what ifs. AA has had plenty of time to assess this team and if he doesn't upgrade SP or 2B then he better be right about this team because his job is on the line.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Goins as our starting 2B. Redmond as our #5. Happ as our #4. This could get ugly fast.

vic city Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Gose 4th OF, Sierra DH platoon guy I think Sierra's bat will surprise some people this year and if Gose can hit .250 with plus defense I'll be satisfied.
Anemic0ffense Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Gose 4th OF, Sierra DH platoon guy Just threw up in my mouth a little... Sierra *sigh*. Couldn't even get a platoon guy for Lind. Embarrassing.

Smokey Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I liked everything you said except the part where Drabek is a legitimate major league starter Really??????????????? We have enough pitching right now and don't need Ubaldo. Isn't this exactly the opposite of what you've been saying???
The_DH Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Don't you know being out of options is the same as being useful? No room for both. We will need an 8 man bullpen this season.
Smokey Verified Member Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 So wish we hadn't got involved in temporary windows to be good. So do I, but now that we have, sitting on our hands makes last year's terrible moves look even worse.
