Mariners Willing To Pay Cano $230-240MM

By Steve Adams [December 5, 2013 at 3:21pm CST]

Robinson Cano flew to Seattle to meet with the Mariners in person today, and the team has informed him that they are willing to pay as much as $230-240MM on a 10-year contract, according to Enrique Rojas of ESPNDeportes.com (Spanish link).

It was reported yesterday that the Mariners may have topped the Yankees' offer of roughly $170MM, but if true, the reported $230-240MM offer would shatter the Yankees' highest bid. The Mariners met with Cano's representatives on Tuesday, according to multiple reports, but this appears to be the first instance of Cano traveling to Seattle to meet with club officials.

Cano and agents Jay-Z of Roc Nation Sports and Brodie Van Wagenen of CAA are said to be seeking something in the neighborhood of $252MM. The Yankees reportedly will not offer Cano more than $200MM, and in the wake of that news, the offense-starved Mariners appear to have emerged as major players in the Cano sweepstakes.

Now what do you do with both Franklin and Ackley?

Trade one of them to us for cheap!

Similar to the thames trade please?

If they liked Thames, they're going to love Sierra.

I can't believe money is this much of an option to a guy like Cano to consider the Mariners as opposed to going back to NY. Pitchers park, lousy team aside from a few assets. It really just blows my mid.

Just when it seems that teams have figured out not to hand out long long deals a dumbass comes out of the woodworks with his dick out. I just don't see the benefit of signing anyone to that kind of a deal.

I assume JZ would go all-in AA-style. Walker and Ackley traded for Price, Franklin traded for a back-end starter.

Let's Marlins them.

Ideally keep them and don't spend $230 million on wins 78-81.

Hopefull the mariners bid the Yanks up and he stays there for 240 mil, At 31 he has what 3 very good years then 2 average years then it is all downhill.

If Cano signs with Seattle, then I'll probably just sell my DDL franchise to fatcow or someone.

If mariners are willing to spend money.. they could have a lineup similar to this

1. Miller SS

2. Ackley CF

3. Cano 2B

4. Cruz/Granderson RF

5. Morales DH

6. Seager 3B

7. Saunders LF

8. Smoak/Montero 1B

9. Zunino C

Bench: Montero/Smoak, Bloomqvist, Almonte

1. Felix

2. Iwakuma

3. FA Signing or trade using Franklain

4. Walker

5. Ramirez/Paxton/Maurer

.. would need to raise team cap by like 50mil..

Yes, I think as a jays fan I'd rather he sign for 10 years with NY and have them stuck with another monstrosity of a contract, even if he still will be good for another 3 years or so.

That's a bad team. CF, DH, 1B, LF, and possibly C are well below-average.

I think Zunino is going to be great catcher, great future.

This lineup is obviously not the best but this will make them compete at least and I feel that Mariners are looking to do exactly this... even if that means creating a future nightmare

They also have lots of young talent they can move to improve weaknesses..

I wonder what they will do with morales.. if hey do resign, I feel they will overpay a lot more than any other team. He played pretty well for them last year.

If they trade Walker in a package for Price

1. Felix

2. Iwakuma

3. Price

4. FA Signing or in a trade using Franklin

5. Ramirez/Paxton/Maurer

I think you are right on. We go to Seattle at least three or four times per year, and each time we go, there are less and less fans in the stands and less interest. At least, less interest as Mariners fans. There are lots of Yankee, Red Sox or Jays fans, when they come to town. But I think actual interest in the Mariners has been on a steady decline.

This team is going to try to win the offseason....and further entend their mediocrity. No way Cano is exclusive, they'd pair him with some other big move. They could have 3 pieces costing 65-70 mil/year, with little else. Sure hope they don't trade Walker to the AL East...

Adding Price, Cano, Cruz/Granderson, Resigning Morales .. without even trading their decent farm, or a return they could get for franklin. They should win the offseason for biggest moves.. doesn't mean best moves.

They signed close to a $2 billion tv deal last year and money should no longer be a problem, and so they may abuse it.

From anything I hear on the Seattle sportstalk, they are in on everybody, and the first one that signs will be the direction they go in. Supposedly Armstrong is leaving because he doesn't like the new direction. (not sure if this is just supposition). But the Mariners are going to do something or anything to improve their team this year, and $ is not important.

That's a really good rotation. The M's are closer than people think. They have the money, so why not make a free agent splash. Although Choo + Garza + Granderson or something makes more sense than Cano.

1. Miller SS

2. Ackley OF

3. Choo OF

4. Granderson/Cruz OF

5. Morales DH

6. Seager 3B

7. Smoak/Montero 1B

8. Franklin 2B

9. Zunino C

Felix

Iwakuma

Garza

Price

Ramirez/Paxton/Maurer

lol that rotation...

Just speculating.. but I bet the Yanks will go to 8/200.. which I dont think is a bad deal for him.. he should bring back the value even if its frontloaded..

some team will therefore prob have to give him and extra $30 or $40m.. I cant see SEA doing it though... maybe

The Jays need to get in on this and trade them Jose. Get a few of those filler pieces and Walker (should be possible) and sign another OF such as Choo (Or a solid 3/4 OF combo for cheap with another SP).

Jays need to remove themselves some from the win now mode and get involved in the teams doing what they did last year for Dickey.

"Jays need to remove themselves from the win now mode"

Not gonna happen

A.A is basically forced to make this a winning team now. If he starts back pedaling from what he did last year he won't be around. His only chance to stick around is to get to the playoffs this season.

Part of my point is that I think in such a deal they can come close to improving this year, and for the short term future.

I feel like the best financial decision for both Cano and his famous agent would be to have him take substantially less money to stay in New York, if that indeed ends up being the choice. \

There's a lot of personal brand value to having Cano in New York and in pinstripes. There's also a lot of risk in him going to Seattle. You could slap a not-insignificant dollar value on that risk.

Montero has potential and its a real stretch to say that Smoak is well below average.

Being a gajillionaire living in a beautiful town like Seattle sounds quite appealing. If I was on the backend of my career I'd probably prefer to play there over the fishbowl that is NY.

5:15pm: Cano asked the Mariners for a ten-year, $240MM deal, but the Mariners' offer did not exceed $200MM, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal tweets.

Maybe Jack Z not as fully retarded as previously reported. Still... pretty retarded, but not full retard.
