Nominations for best research

Tangotiger

Feel free to post your favorites. Off the top of my head, and this is recency-bias, I like the times thru order (and more) by MGL, and Chris Caruthers work on pitch-level ERA. I’m sure there’s plenty more, so, feel free to post it.

Great. Enhorabuena!!!

amazing. If you win and they won't pay your way to the conference...I'll start a fundraiser.

Damn that's a good idea. Chris could cover it for the blog.

You have no money to feed a starving 3rd world friend but have money to buy a plane ticket for a nerd. Damn

I'd like to change my funniest poster vote.

I said I'd fundraise for him, I didn't say I'd waive my standard fee. I might however sink my cut into BJMB and Breaking Blue shirts for him to wear.

Before we start to raise funds we should make sure that JFaS is able to go and he has filled out this

Students, apply for a Yoseloff Scholarship to attend:

With generous funding from The Anthony A. Yoseloff Foundation, Inc., SABR will award up to four scholarships to college students who wish to attend the 2014 SABR Analytics Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, on March 13-15, 2014. This scholarship will pay for registration, air transportation and lodging up to a total value of $1,250.

The objective of this scholarship fund is to encourage student engagement with baseball analytics, and to engender an active interest in baseball research and SABR. The Yoseloff scholarship is to assist young researchers who want to attend SABR's Analytics Conference and to introduce them to fellow SABR members and professionals within the baseball community. Through this fund, SABR hopes to inspire future baseball research, expose students to high-quality research and build the research capability of interested students.

Students must be currently enrolled in a high school, college undergraduate or graduate program, and be between 18 and 29 years of age at the time of the conference.

For details on the scholarship requirements or to download an application form, click here.

Nikolai should be filling that out too.

My Breaking Blue pitcher projections are finished! A lot of work but I'm happy now. Here

are the projections for the top 3 reaming FA pitchers: (ERA/FIP/xFIP)

Jimenez: 4.23/4.16/4.18

Garza: 3.91/3.79/3.80

Santana: 4.18/4.10/4.04

All inputs are controllable strictly by the pitcher (no K's or BB's). There is no park adjustment, league adjustment, team defence adjustment or anything of the sort. Everyone is considered to be in a league average environment to compare easily.

I want to get some friendly acfion for the season next year. $10 Jimi's FIP is at or under 3.60. I know youre not big on him. You down?

I just don't see Jimenez being quite that bad either (well, maybe ERA if he comes to the AL East). I would probably put Jimenez closer to 4.00/3.6/3.75. Garza seems about right, and Santana is reasonable unless that new pitch he's working on changes things.

It will be an interesting proof of concept to see how your projections fare.

I would take that if I ever allowed myself to bet real money. I would wait to see where he signed though before agreeing.

Ha. Yeah i didnt know that was the case. Sometimes the Ivy League kind of guys end up with the worst prob because they are overconfident they can beat the system:)

Maybe dont start down that road then..lol..

But if youre game, i am too. Will see where he signs. If its Jays im backimg out

NO TIPS or xxFIP?

The Jays also have one starter projected above average (and ERA well above average)! Lol

Which is why their depth is less important. Your depth doesnt serve to lower your staff ERA. If they can maintain it, thats ideal

Looking at them makes me really jeaous of the Indians top 3. Masterson, Kluber, Salazar will be filthy.

Salazar has never thrown more than 111.1 innings in a season. He may be filthy, but he won't be in the rotation for the entire season. I don't know what to make of Kluber. Masterson I like.

I'm kind of jealous of the Indians team.

I wonder if being known as being saber-heavy is a good thing for max. mass appeal. But on the other hand, its dedication to the niche gives it some uniqueness as well. So idk.

I havent read many (actually none) articles so i dont know how it all meshes but i know most authors are saber heavy and i saw this comment..

Im sure its prob something juiced thought over. Maybe it can be like the tv shows that clean up at the Emmys but the ratings are sketchy...lol.. Joking.. I know theyre doing good work bases on all the shout outs

Yeah that's a discussion I've had with the guys.

For the most part, I don't think the guys care to be a massive blog, they're happy in the nice.

I of course want it to be big lol.

Yeah i fig'd that was the deal.

But i dont know if it has to be either, or... There can be some mix without "dumbing it down".. Not like you need to pimp RBIs and sell out..

Just would be good to mix in some quality opinionated pieces that dont heavily rely on saber to quantify their point. Maybe you guys do that already though..idk

Article of pitches with TIPS.

http://www.breakingblue.ca/2014/01/12/ranking-2013-blue-jays-pitches-with-tips/

Values were a little different then the numbers I posted earlier (I wasn't including foul (Runner Going))

Interesting. Surprising to see so many of Happ's pitches rate with decent TIPS. I think when you get more data, it might be an idea to separate starters and relievers in the comparisons.

Nice job! Might be worth noting that the only actual winners are probably, like always, the lawyers. Yankees are a close second though

Yeah the lawyers always win. Even when they lose, they get paid.
