IMO this doesn't need to be a discussion on the merits of corporal punishment. Giving a four year old visible cuts and bruises all over his body is excessive and unnecessary.

He went too far but lol @ the pussification of society nowadays.

He got spanked. I don't agree with spanking kids but it's still somewhat accepted in certain places

He still went way too far though. One solid smack across the ass isn't going to draw blood or leave serious bruises.

C'mon man, give your heads a shake.

I'm with Spanky on this one. We can't lump spanking in with using a "switch". It's obviously much more painful with the birch he used, evidenced by the visible lacerations.

There are many things "accepted" in places that are clearly reprehensible.

Even a single hit that doesn't leave a lasting bruise is still abuse. Personally as a parent, I can't imagine a more serious breach of trust between two human beings. In my mind, this is worse than the Ray Rice ordeal. At least Janay Rice is a grown up capable of making the decision to leave a bad situation. Children are pretty much completely dependant on their parents, and have no mechanism of removing themselves from the situation.

Surely we don't need a video of Adrian Peterson beating his kid to get a full appreciation of how terrible this is.

Like other people have said a spanking is not what AP did. He was stuffing leaves into the 4 year old child's mouth and leaving visible injuries. The child obviously suffered mentally as well because he was scared his dad would "punch him in the face" if he told the cops.

A 4 year old child doesn't even have the intellectual ability to understand what is going on in a situation like that. AP is a sick f*** and deserves to go to jail.

As a kid that was spanked regularly, I 100% disagree that it is child abuse.

I am sorry for speaking in ignorance. That kind of stuff is terrible.

Fair enough and I respect your opinion. Maybe it was much worse than a general spanking.

I doubt he recovers from this. I would say something like a 4-6 game suspension would be sufficient but with all of the heat on the NFL from the Ray Rice debacle he probably gets at least one year. He was already showing signs of slowing down to begin with.

I agree with all of this (other than the slowing down part). The timing of this couldn't be worse for AP. The NFL took so much heat for the Rice situation that they're going to go out of their to give AP a more strict punishment than he deserves. I really wouldn't be surprised to see him suspended for the entire year (even though I think that's way too harsh).

Why would the rest of the season be too harsh? He left visible injury to a 4 year old and seems like he enjoys hitting his kids. Do you think that deserves only 6 games? Take away the thing AP loves the most, the sport of football.

I think 8 games and some sort of anger-management program is fair. By no means do I think he enjoys hitting kids. I think it's terrible to do what he did, but I don't think it's something that would happen again. He's a father that was trying to discipline his child, but let it get out of hand and made the stupid decision to use a "switch". (For the record, I don't support any kind of physical discipline).

Give him 8 games, and if something like this ever happens again, suspend him indefinitely.

8 games and ~7 million in forfeited salary (which could be donated by the NFL to some child abuse charity) is more than enough.

Yeah I was just about to mention this. The salary he's losing is a massive blow as well.

He could have more of a reason if the child was 10 but a 4 year old doesn't know any better. How many people even remember anything when they were 4 years old? I doubt AP was just "disciplining" his child, To me it sounds like he was angry about what the kid did and used his anger with the switch when hitting the child which is completely wrong.

I think Jail time should be considered.

I can concede that in some cases, based on the age of the child, and how the spanking is administered, that it might not be classified as abuse...but I was under the impression that this was a very young kid, maybe 4 years old? I have a 5 year old, and there's no way he'd be able to comprehend physical discipline, or be able to learn from it.

The worst part for me is that I've heard my kids yells when they've been hurt, and I've heard what it sounds like when they are legitimately afraid like when they have nightmares. I can just imagine the sound his child made the first time he got hit with the switch. For AP to hear that sound, and then be able to continue to hit him some more turns my stomach.

He should at least get what Ray Rice got, if not more.

Wow the NFL is facing image crises all the time now.

These aren't third line scrubs doing bad stuff and creating negative media attention These are SUPERSTAR players. And it's not just sports fans that are hearing about it. Wives that could literally name one or two NFL players at most have heard all about Ray Rice and Adrian Peterson, just like they did about Michael Vick.

Will it hurt the NFL's bottom line much? Probably not right away. But they gotta watch it or people could get slowly turned off. Partly because it gets harder to cheer for these guys, but also the league is less fun to watch when star players are out.

None of you guys got belted as kids?

Jesus Christ, kids now are given time outs and all that, none of which works and a big reason for why the next generation are so f***ed up. No one keeps their kid in line anymore.

I understand that leaving visible cuts on your kid is not good but we don't really know anything aside from that.

100% agree.

To the people who don't agree with smacking a child, or knowing that Time-outs are as useless as the parents that administer them.

Maybe grounding the kid and stick to the grounding is the answer?

Go to your room and don't come out the rest of the day. Or you're not playing with your friends for the next week. Or I'm taking away your Play Station or Xbox for the next week/month. Make the punishment hurt them for what the child likes.

So different. He shouldn't have lost s***, and she should've been arrested.

The police are so against charging women its hilarious. The reason being is to not separate the woman from the possible relationship they have with a child. That's why women who make it to jail custody are way worse than the guys, because they've either been given many chances and have screwed up so many times they must be a piece of s***, or they've done something so bad, the police can't ignore the circumstance and have to charge and the JP has no choice but to send them to jail.

The inequities in the justice system are a f***ing joke. And even when women make it to jail, they're given exponentially more access to programs and treatment.

Every year there's a major pr nightmare, whether it's concussions, replacement refs, or former players blowing their heads off, it doesn't matter. North America is just too addicted to the NFL.

It's refreshing to have the spotlight on the NFL and not MLB.

This is exactly right; choosing a punishment and sticking to it is very effective. The problem is that many parents make the threat and then don't follow through. Kids are smart enough to figure this out.

Parents are so soft nowadays its embarrassing. And even though I am not one, I shake my head when I see friends and family punish their kids.

2-5 minute time-outs and then all is forgiven?????

My god, grow some balls and be a f***ing parent first and not a friend.

Good thing I got the Rogers Super Sports Pack. TSN isn't showing any NFL games at 1PM, instead they have 4 channels dedicated to the CFL game Hamilton vs Saskatchewan.
