GNick Verified Member Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 Goins reminds me of a younger Marco Scutaro. When he was with Oakland. Never a top rated prospect but excellent defense, doesn't make a ton of money, can play multiply positions well, adds a little spunk to team.

No one saw him coming because he's a freak.

kgm1 Verified Member Posted September 10, 2013 Posted September 10, 2013 I really don't understand how anyone can be content to go with Kawasaki/Goins/Izturis at 2B even if other positions are upgraded. These are very likely replacement-level players. Go out and get a Punto, Scoot, Ellis, Beckham, or Roberts. None of these players are likely to give you 2+ WAR, except maybe Scoot, but they're all capable of giving you 1+ and probably won't give you 0. The cost would be minimal. Having a 1 WAR 2B with a replacement-level Goins/Kawasaki/Izturis on the bench and another in AAA is far more desirable than having a replacement-level player starting, another on the bench, and another in AAA. I would agree with that IF we have all the money needed to upgrade but i look at the 2b position as the 3rd priority . Getting a catcher is #1 . Getting 2 catchers is probably even more important. Then the Rotation is #2 priority . A decent catcher , some health, and improved defense will boost the rotation quite a bit .

We really need someone to platoon with Lind, or someone better than Lind to play full time at DH. If there's still some money left over I guess we could get a 1 win upgrade at 2B, it might be better to role with Goins/Izturis, who might end up producing that 1 extra win anyway.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 What made you decide to post that quote in this particular thread right after he looked great in his last AB? I was out of town this weekend and didn't get a chance to see any highlights. What a f***ing defensive clinic Goins put on Sunday afternoon, and you laughed when I said he reminds me of Roberto Alomar in the field? Directed at King BTW.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 I'm sure Goins can bring that kind of defense in any month of the year.
gruber92 Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Amazing that everyone puts 2B last to upgrade, when we had -2.5 war there this season. That's f***ing brutal. 2B should be one of the first positions we upgrade this offseason. Because we had the likes of Bonifacio, Izturis and DeRosa there before Goins? Contradict much?

That's f***ing brutal. 2B should be one of the first positions we upgrade this offseason. I interpret that number that opposite way. Even a 0-1 WAR player would be a significant upgrade. I think a combination of Goins and Izturis can easily put up 0-1 WAR, so it should be the last position to upgrade. Also 2B is not a real offensive position, and this year we suffered from terrible D at 2B, which Goins can fix. The offensive upgrade at 2B is a real priority, but there are much more important things to deal with (SP, C)
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 I think a combination of Goins and Izturis can easily put up 0-1 WAR Shoot for the moon! Even if you miss, you'll land amongst the stars!!! (Posters seen in Ryan Goins' grade 2 classroom) Goins, Goins, Goins.

Laika Community Moderator Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Ryan Goins will be at Honest Ed's on Sunday to teach kids some baseball fundamentals! On the menu: - How to avoid walks - How to hit the ball softly - How to avoid extra base hits - How to get fans!

GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 A 75 wRC+ on a 0.348 BABIP is a good sign, right? He needs to learn how to aim his line drives.

Regression to the mean. Nobody can expect 2B to be this bad again this year, even if we rolled with the same trio. What most guys are getting at is that realistically, we won't, not that we shouldn't, address everything. I'd feel a lot more comfortable with a new catcher, SP and Goins/Izturis/Kawa, dont really give a f*** which of those three it is, than keeping Arencibia, signing a SP and a guy like Kelly Johnson to play second. Interested to hear your take. Which situation would you prefer to see?

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Unless AA finds and exploits another CBA inefficiency, odds are he has no choice but to improve some of the team from within. The farm needs to be rebuilt, not ripped apart again this summer. We have marginal expendable pieces at the big league level, and hardly any of them hold any trade value (Rasmus), and our payroll is already pushing 140. We are the Phillies, not the Dodgers. So expecting upgrades all over the diamond is foolish.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Realistically, nothing short of a $170 million payroll is enough to turn this thing around next year, and even that probably wouldn't be enough. All this talk about what should be done is moot because the only course that makes any sense is a purging of the FO from Beeston down. Completely agree. Will this happen? I highly doubt it.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 This is a terrible idea. We are in championship mode again next season, I expect AA to trade more of the farm. We have literally nothing to promote from within in AA or AAA, and if we do go into next season promoting from within, AA should probably be canned for f***ing up this team. He's already f***ed it up. Who do we have to make massive upgrades to this team? Stroman and Hutch? These have to be the guys who hold the only true weight in trade value. Unless we're trading for Bruce Chen, I doubt the farm allows us to make any big acquisition. Still interested in whether you'd roll with New C/SP/Goins or new 2B/SP/JPA ? Edit: Forgot Sanchez, thanks BTS
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 We'll add a marginal upgrade at 2B, sign a bunch of washed up SP's to minor league contracts hoping to catch lightning. Have JPA behind the dish. Wash, rinse, repeat.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 To be fair, there's really no reason to choose between the two. Someone like Punto or Kelly Johnson is probably a 1+ win upgrade on in-house options and would likely come in at ~$3 million. If AA is able to land a decent C and SP, I would hope he'd find room to add such a small around of payroll to upgrade 2B, even if it means selling Santos for nothing. I said this earlier in the thread. That if we are able to get a SP and C that cheaping out on a 1-2 million dollar 2B is literally suicide. It gets a little tiresome reading everyone ripping on the guys who stand behind Goins, for whatever reason, when its apparent that our biggest hole is at C. By far and wide. Even if AA only made one move the whole offseason (rather than bolstering the pen, which he'll inevitably do), I'd hope that he realizes that JPA is an incompetent MLB player and replaces him.
L54 Old-Timey Member Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 Players we could trade from the MILB? Lots of players raised there value this year. Stroman, Sanchez, Nolin, Jimenez from the upper levels. Goins could be a good sell high candidate (I will get ripped for this lmao). Pillars value probably went down after his value was through the roof in AAA. Lots of lower level guys raised there stock this year, Robson Nay Barreto Lugo DeJong Labourt and Dean especially. Jimenez isn't much more than a third piece in a big trade, IMO. I do think that he is one of our most underrated prospects positional value wise.
Convo Verified Member Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 I forgot guys!!!!! Maybe AA could work his magic and try and hype Sierra like he's the next Bautista! I think he already hyped him enough (i.e. "best OF arm in all of baseball")
Convo Verified Member Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 You missed the joke apparently. He does have a rocket of an arm though. *Cries*

flafson Verified Member Posted September 11, 2013 Posted September 11, 2013 You missed the joke apparently. He does have a rocket of an arm though. I have a better idea, he can market him as the next David Ortiz and let him play as DH, he can hit but can't field.
