GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Sierra IMO shows talent and potential but lacks some serious fundamentals. With some decent September numbers maybe AA can get something for him. If he somehow continues wOBAing like .340 and puts up ArmR we may get, like, some team's #20 prospect.
flafson Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 If he somehow continues wOBAing like .340 and puts up ArmR we may get, like, some team's #20 prospect. It all depends on how you market him, he's strong, got some pop, looks like he can field sometimes, he's Dominican and was personally taught by EE, Bautista and Reyes.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 It all depends on how you market him You could market him as the second f***ing coming but a reasonable GM won't care. I could see JPA + Sierra to the Phils though, that's a real nice fit. Maybe get a pitching prospect back. Aumont could work.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Convert sierra to a pitcher He wouldn't have to field much But he wouldn't be allowed sunglasses
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 So what, you think AA is going to call up his fellow GMs and try and pass Sierra off as a future 40-HR threat for the purposes of trading him? You realize that pretty much every GM in the league is smarter than him, yes? RAjr may not be. Seriously, make this happen AA. 0 defense + 0 bat + Rocket arm = RP Ala Justin Jackson, Sergio Santos He has his moments on defense
Caper Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Author Posted September 9, 2013 Jose Reyes was very high on Goins in his interview today.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Jose Reyes was very high on Goins in his interview today. somehow i don't think Reyes is gonna trash him regardless
Caper Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Author Posted September 9, 2013 somehow i don't think Reyes is gonna trash him regardless Probably not.... what I have seen so far has been the best defense from 2nd base I have seen in a long time... even better then KJ and Aaron hill.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Hill was an easy plus defender for his first 3 or 4 years in Toronto. Dude was really, really good for a long time. Goins has looked good for 2 weeks. Definitely not a fair comparison yet. Certainly seems like Goins can play a plus 2nd base though. All this would mean of course is that you might want him as the 25th man in 2014 instead of someone like Kawasaki. I want to see Goins at short.

DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Jose Reyes was very high on Goins in his interview today. Reyes should have killed him in the media. Seriously though what else would you expect him to say?
theblujay Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 You do realize how insane this is? In 129 games with Jays in 2007 John McDonald put up .9 WAR with a wRC+ of 57. McDonald might be better on D, but I'm pretty confident Goins can easily surpass a wRC+ of 57.
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 I don't know if what I'm seeing is plus 2nd base... or if that Boni and Izi were so bad that he just looks like a plus defender It's possible. If Goins was following a mint 2B like Pedroia, would he look totally average? It's like those optical illusions with colours. e.g. Both of these dogs are the same colour, but the backgrounds make one look blue and the other look yellow: http://brainden.com/images/yellow-blue-dogs.jpg
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Probably not.... what I have seen so far has been the best defense from 2nd base I have seen in a long time... even better then KJ and Aaron hill. Even so his vat is terrible. He has a 2 WAR ceiling but there is very little chance he ever hits enough to be that valuable. He should be viewed as a -1.5 - 1 WAR guy. Good to have in AAA or of the bench. Bottom line is Kendrick would be a huge upgrade and should be targeted by AA. I wouldn't give up Stroman for Kendrick though. Nolin, Cecil and a high upside A ball fit like Dean or Robson.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 I want to see Goins at short. I feel comfortable with Kawasaki's D at 2b, SS and 3b. Perhaps Goins can show the same kind of versatility in September. If he doesn't I'd much rather go with Kawasaki of the bench.

If he doesn't I'd much rather go with Kawasaki of the bench. So we're settling for "comfortable"? Kawasaki can play shortstop but he's average at best. The range isn't plus and the arm is noodley. They both can't hit enough to matter. If Goins can pick it at short, then he's my bench infielder. But it's not even an either-or scenario. They could sign or trade for a bench IF better than both of them. None of this really matters. Nothing we post in this thread matters. Actually, nothing we post on this website matters. Furthermore, WE don't matter. *ceases to exist* ***sound of gentle blowing wind***

I know that 90% of the people here disagree with me but i'm pretty sure we signed Izturis and traded for Bonifacio and even though a blind chicken can find corn from time to time, i prefer our chances with Goins than signing and/or trading for another "great" 2B.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 I'm not sure how much I want Kendrick, unless we address catcher and pitching first and have money left over. Otherwise, I think I'd rather try and nab someone like Ackley or Infante.

GNick Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Goins looks more than impressive
GD Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 Goins looks more than impressive He's 25 He has a .327 OBP He has a .699 OPS He has a .381 BABIP He has a .051 ISO
CHRIS Verified Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 So you are saying that because we signed Izturis and traded for Boni and they failed, means we should just give up trying to find a 2B and go with a scrub in house option. Great f***ing plan I think he's saying that the same people who evaluated and acquired Izturis and Boni will be the same people evaluating and addressing 2B this offseason. I think it would be best if Goins goes full-Bautista so that we don't have to put the army of scouts on duty to "solve" this position again.

I know this isn't what you meant entirely but just the image of Ryan Goins crushing 54 homers and putting up an 8 WAR season is really funny to think about lol

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 (edited) I can't believe how divisive this thread has become After watching "TOP PROSPECTS, TOP PROSPECTS HERE!!!" like Arencibia and Snider suck and become essentially non-major leaugers, is it somehow wrong to hope that Goins outperforms previous expectations? I see a guy who plays excellent defense at a position where that is what matters most, and hold out some hope that he could be a league average bat or at least close to it. I want him to succeed and I have enjoyed watching him play. If he keeps this up the rest of this year and in to spring training, I can see him having a shot at every day playing time. Add-on post rant: I recognize that there is a difference between HOPING this guy becomes good enough to play every day and EXPECTING him to. Edited September 9, 2013 by G-Snarls
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted September 9, 2013 Posted September 9, 2013 He's 25 He has a .327 OBP He has a .699 OPS He has a .381 BABIP He has a .051 ISO If goins could replicate those offensive numbers along with the outstanding defense he's displayed that would be fantastic. I'm not sure he can produce those numbers for a year, but the Jays got nothing out of 2nd base this year. Ultimately whoever plays second isn't really going to decide the Jays future next year. A number 9 hitter shouldn't decide your team's fate. I just want a second baseman who plays good defense and can produce a .650ish ops... The team's fortune hinges on Dickey playing a bit better, Buehrle replicating his numbers, McGowan or Morrow or both staying healthy and performing and one other starting pitching hopefully a signing pitching reasonably well performing. They also need a catcher and hopefully a healthy Cabrera. The starting pitching needs to drop the ERA by a run..which would put them middle of the pack.....The offense as it is currently sits tied for 6th in runs scored this year and with fewer injuries and improvement at catcher the offense should again be a top tier offense.
