Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Moving Oliver and selling high on Cecil seem like no brainers to me. Oliver goes without saying and Cecil can go too since he will be arbitration eligible.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 I have said numerous times we should move the entire pen if we can. That being said, you don't see Janssen as more of a priority to move? Janssen will be in his final season next year earning $4M looking for a substantial raise. Delabar makes virtually nothing and is under control until 2018. It's fine to cash in on Delabar now if the return is significant, but Janssen is the priority. Not opposed to that but Janssen is just as easy to move next year and might be needed next year for that matter.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Keep the pen cheap and move the guys with expiring contracts and those expected to get substantial raises.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Not opposed to that but Janssen is just as easy to move next year and might be needed next year for that matter. True but if he gets moved now we save about $3.5M since his replacement is likely making league minimum.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2013 Author Posted July 24, 2013 Keep the pen cheap and move the guys with expiring contracts and those expected to get substantial raises. We need relievers with minor league options lol Stilson, Perez x2, McGuire, Jenkins....................Jeffress?
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 KLaw isn't smart, the 90% of this forum know that. I'd be all for moving two of Janssen/Cecil/Delabar/Rogers. They aren't core pieces, the reliever market is flush with buyers and it would be selling from a position of depth. Obviously, AA would have to get good value back, the last thing he needs to do right now is make a bad trade.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Also, it would allow for Delabar and Santos to get save opps and we really should try and move Santos if he can stay healthy next season. His team options kick in from 2015 - 2017 and he starts to get expensive at that point but some team would take it and send us a prospect if he can get a bunch of saves under his belt next year.

Lets say AA moved Janssen, Delabar, Oliver and Cecil. We still have Santos, Loup, Wagner, McGowan, Perez, Perez, Lincoln, Rogers, Stilson and Careno in the mix. Go out and sign a reliever from FA and call it a day.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 AA did it great on Rasmus-Yunel trades but he lost his mojo, his inspiration source. Not enough tatziki on his souvlaki?

AA has built a beautiful bullpen, it's a shame that AA fell in love of the bullpen and is reluctant to transfer it to other teams.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 AA did it great on Rasmus-Yunel trades but he lost his mojo, his inspiration source. Been saying it for a couple weeks now but, Janssen + Oliver + for Castellanos. Something like Boni and Janssen for Wong could work as well.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Not enough tatziki on his souvlaki? Switched to low fat yogurt from the full fat stuff and his brain hasn't worked the same way since
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2013 Author Posted July 24, 2013 Not enough tatziki on his souvlaki? or simply afraid of failure. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Speaking of relievers, Farina is now closing at AA. His health is no longer a question. He should be in Buffalo soon. It's been a long time since he was a top 10 organizational prospect but the 3rd round pick from Clemson was indeed exactly that and had been pegged as a future late inning arm. He's 26 now.

Org guy but no reason why he couldn't be effective in the majors at some point. The front office's obsession with the pen is absolutely nauseating.

I agree that Janssen 1:1 for Castellanos or Wong wont cut it but in a package that fills some holes for a contender for a few years and I could see it happening.

I don't think that Casey would be enough of a centrepiece.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Think we are all forgetting that Rajai Davis will be testing free agency and is looking for a starting job and a lot more money.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Bonifacio is not a Cardinals kind of player. Wong had been mentioned in Garza talks. I don't think that Casey would be enough of a centrepiece. He's not but his versatility in the OF and IF would be helpful to them. He could be used as a late innings pinch runner which they could use as well. I know Wong gets a lot of love around here but if he is much more than a 2 WAR player I will be shocked. I can't see any GM's targeting him as the centre-piece for a true difference maker as a potential difference maker is always the asking price.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Think we are all forgetting that Rajai Davis will be testing free agency and is looking for a starting job and a lot more money. Good luck to him, he'll be waiting for that opportunity for a very long time.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Good luck to him, he'll be waiting for that opportunity for a very long time. Free agency never ceases to amaze. He is a weak CF at best but in this year's market he will be able to sell himself as a CF.
CHRIS Verified Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 I don't have much faith in this organization anymore, but they have to at least trade Oliver, right? Right? I mean, his case isn't even one of maintaining the bullpen going into next season. Dude's probably retiring. They could probably even sell the move as trying to do right by Oliver by granting him one last chance of playing for a contender. This is as no brainerish as it gets.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 Free agency never ceases to amaze. He is a weak CF at best but in this year's market he will be able to sell himself as a CF. He's a good platoon player with positional versatility and speed that is a weapon on the basepaths. If a team picks him up to start they will be very disappointed (or the AAAA Astros) in his performance as an everyday player. I can see him getting a couple M pay raise to play somewhere else but, I'd like to see the Jays bring him back in the same role.

He is a good role player, a very valuable piece for any team, I think will get good contract in free agency (~5M AAV)
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 yeah. Janssen for Alen Hanson could be great. Wong, Castellanos and relievers in the same trade? ----No way, maybe 3way-deal I would like to aquire any of those 3 or all of those 3 for relievers. Rajai has made me change my perception about him. He is a good role player, a very valuable piece for any team, I think will get good contract in free agency (~5M AAV) I think we should resign Davis. He's a great 4th OF and good to have around for when injuries occur. He's on pace for 3 WAR if he were to play the whole year.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 I hope Davis realizes the pattern. His stats were good in his last year in Oakland because they learned how to properly use him. In Toronto he stunk it up for 2 years mainly because he was used inappropriately. Now that he's being used correctly his stats look good. He could get a starting job with another team but then he will stink and be hated again. If he realizes he is best as a role player, I think he stays here. That doesn't exclude him from getting traded and then resigning here in the off-season. The best trade value is packaging him and a reliever or two for a better prospect/young player a la Rasmus or Jose Cruz.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted July 24, 2013 Posted July 24, 2013 or simply afraid of failure. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. He's experienced quite a bit of failure. Some people say "failure isn't that bad" and continue to try their best... other people just go into their shell and collect a pay check until they get fired.... You're saying AA is in the second group??
