My nephew was drafted by the Jays in June and is in the GCL. Is this the best site to get updates and analysis from the GCL?

It's a great spot to discuss anything Jays related, including the GCL. The GCL features some top Jays' prospects like Franklin Barreto and Anthony Alford, so they get a fair bit of coverage compared to most other sites.

More importantly, congratulations to your nephew and family! I'll be rooting for him to make it!

Thanks. I see the Lovelace kid is playing well. He is another Iowa kid who was actually signed to play at Iowa with Matt but he chose to sign with the Jays. He was a great athlete in high school. It will be interesting to see what happens to him when he focuses solely on baseball.

That wouldn't surprise me. I am assuming college guys don't spend a lot of time in the GCL. I am curious how long they will keep him as a starter.

That's awesome, it's always cool to know people who are related to baseball players. Another forum I was on had the cousin of Josh Collmenter, an underrated Diamondbacks arm. It's cool though that you know someone in our own system. Neat stuff.

Matt Dermody - made his first start today.

That's awesome for you and his family. Congrats. He's one of my sleeper prospects from this years draft despite being a senior. Lefties who throw low 90s with a plus changeup are always valuable commodities. If the Jays can refine his delivery to get more velocity (his delivery has some funk to it), or if his command improves significantly we could have another Sean Nolin type of prospects here. Good luck to your nephew.

If you're looking for something to get your nephew for Christmas this year....... try a set of weighted balls..........don't ask.

Pops was eventually bullied off the forum starting with ECJF and then others just bombarding him with fat son jokes.

Do you mind posting the scouring report(s) on him? :)

Not many, but here's a few.

Perfect Game

WILD CARD: Matt Dermody, lhp, University of Iowa. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound Dermody took a moderate step forward this spring as a prospect (4-6, 4.15, 85 IP/26 BB/75 SO), but as a draft-eligible sophomore, could blossom in 2012 with another year in school.

MATT DERMODY, lhp, University of Iowa (So.)

Slender build (6-5/190), struggles to gain strength; loose/easy arm; FB 88-89/T-92, gets good tilt on CU/CH.

From High School:

Matt Dermody - LHP - 2009 - Norwalk, IA

Dermody excites the scouts with his very projectable 6-4, 180 lb frame and his loose arm. He sat at 86 mph on his fastball and showed very good feel for a change up, along with a big downer curveball in the low 70’s.

Minorleagueball

Matt Dermody, LHP, 6’5 190, Iowa, NCAA

(2012) 0-3(w-l) 5.40(era) 28.1(ip) 31(h) 12(bb) 29(so) 2(hr)

Dermody has what baseball types call "electric stuff." Fastball sits 88-92 with a loose easy arm action. The tall lanky left-hander also throws a knee-buckling curve ball and possesses impeccable control over his explosive fastball.

Baseball America

The state's top four-year college prospect is Matt Dermody, a draft-eligible sophomore. He's a 6-foot-5, 200-pound lefthander with an 88-90 mph fastball that peaks at 93, but he has a hitch in his funky delivery that reduces his projectability. His curveball, changeup and command are all decent.

Yep legit. Rick Litsch and ECJF were wonderful friends

I'm so, so disappointed I wasn't around for this.

Thank you ace3113. Sounds like Matt Dermody has got potential.

It seems like he could use a wicked strength and conditioning program though. Just dream on the potential adding crazy muscle to that frame and loose arm.

Could possibly upgrade his stuff a level or two.

Sounds like he's a hard gainer, maybe throw him on the Tim Collins program and weighted balls program.

It was funny at first, but everyone just kept poking fun whenever the chance presented itself and it got more cruel as it went on.

Yeah, there's definitely more velocity in there if they can unlock it, either by finding a way to get him to add more strength/weight, or refining his delivery so the arm stroke is smoother. The changeup is his best secondary, but his curve is also solid. It's a long shot, but there are definitely tools there.

good thing we hired Steve Delabar's program maker

Called it

So, do we change the title of this thread, or start a Vancouver Canadians Updates thread?

Posted
Well not really, the OP just wanted to know if this was a good place to find info on his Nephew.

Yes, and my tongue in cheek comment was that since the OP wasn't REEEEAALLYasking about the GCL really, but rather about his Nephew, that we should likely create another thread for him to track the progress of said nephew :P

Tell your nephew to ask for the Steve Delabar program, now that we have exclusive rights with the guy who made that program, it should be available too all Blue Jays.

It might give him more velocity and worse case scenario, it will help his arm stay durable.
