John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Just wondering what everyone thinks about Esmil, there's no doubting the results he's been getting as a starter so far, which really starts to make that trade of Gomes and Aviles start to appear sane. Has the addition of the sinker really made that much of a difference?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Author Posted June 19, 2013 THis is the one to keep, mods can close the other one, I used to be techno savvy, now I cant even submit a poll without posting a thread.... oy
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 I disagree with all of these... I would say "fringy #3 if things go well, likely a good 4 or 5 in the medium to long term"
Dylan Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 I'll wait to see him start another 5+ games to judge his starter abilities. So far looks good though.

Has the addition of the sinker really made that much of a difference? He looks like Henderson Alvarez 2.0. If you were watching from a distance you would swear it was him. I for one think that based on the dramatic improvement in a short time of his sinker, he will be legit. Let's face it, the things filthy. I can't see the league just figuring that out. Next, there is his composure on the mound. AA may have found the pitching version of Jose Bautista, but younger, which is all good! GO JAYS GO!
Bluejays0988 Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 I was thinking the last night while watching the game, he looks like Alvarez but with the ability to actually strike guys out.

At the very least he seems like a great option for long relief duty out of the pen. Looking forward to seeing him pitch for the remainder of the season, I hope he can continue to have similar success.

KSaw Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 He's not going past 100 innings this year so does it really matter at this point? You can't have him make a gigantic jump in innings and expect anything other than him ending up with a dead arm. I do think that he's shown that he is more comfortable as a starter and that his 3rd pitch is good enough to be a starter. He's probably just one of those guys who's better with long toss before a game, followed by a longer warm up. I didn't like him at all out of the pen to be honest and I'm not sure that his success will translate back to the pen. I say that he's a starter and perhaps a decent one but those innings are racking up and this can't go on all season.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2013 Author Posted June 20, 2013 #4 or #5 meaning a 4.5 ish era... Not pitching 4th or 5 th in the rotation. Right now he has better than ace numbers as a starter in 2013.
IronLadle Verified Member Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 He could be when Wang was dominant he primarily relied on his power sinker and Rogers sinker looked good last night
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 i think he could easily become a very good #2 or #3 guy. He has electric stuff and if he can maintan success with this new pitch then his future is bright. Its gonna be hard for him to keep it up through the year though as im not sure he's ever thrown a ton of innings in a year. Much Like Carlos V i could see his arm just getting too tired near the end of the year. Hopefully im wrong though! I see bright things in the futre for Esmil. I think he feels super comfortable here in Toronto as well with all the other Dominicans around and a laid back manager in Gibby. Maybe he's found his home!
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 I love what he's been doing but really, the 4th 5th option is a best case scenario over the long run, right now, let's hope he keeps this run going.

backontop Verified Member Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Rogers got his chance due to injuries and proved what he can do which is why mothers should should not let their" sons grow up to be interested in team sports, you can't control your own destination like you can in Golf or tennis. If you don't make it in golf or tennis, you have no one else to blame, remember that Asian Basketball player with the Knicks the winter before last, because of injuries the man who's job it was all season was to keep the bench warm was forced into action then finally had a chance to PROOVE how good he was. (Lin Mania)The same with Rocket Ismil Rogers!
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 addind the sinker has made him a legit starter. he was never successful before because he only had 2 good pitches and if he was in trouble it was always going to be 96MPH fast ball. now he has enough tools to work through the order 3+ times. and that sinker is brutal. now you see it, where the hell did that go, kind of sinker. he's been a big surprise and a positive one.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 21, 2013 Posted June 21, 2013 Esmil Rogers -I feel more comfortable as a starter, with more confidence. -I have incredible confidence and I can throw all my pitches. -My sinker is my secret weapon.
KSaw Verified Member Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Lol. Everyone had to know he was going to hit a dead arm phase as the innings count got higher. I had suggested shutting him down weeks ago. And ya, I get that the club thought he'd be ok until about 110 but clearly that was ambitious.

KSaw Verified Member Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 I think you're giving Rogers too much credit. The stuff looks the same, it's probable that he was just never very good to begin with. There doesn't have to be a simple reason for his decline. I actually think that he's decent. He is better as a starter. He prepares better with long toss and a longer warm up and his 3rd pitch has come along fairly well. His command went out the window as he tired. Looks that way anyway. I see him as a 4-5 starter. Jury out on whether that's first or second division but he needs to build stamina and innings moving forward. He's probably about done this year.
Clojojo Verified Member Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 He reminds me of a young pedro martinez

He is a solid #5 on a f***ed up team and luckily we fit that criteria.

KSaw Verified Member Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 He reminds me of a young pedro martinez Then you're blind. Pedro was an undersized righty who was thought to be just a reliever by the Dodgers because of his size. He had nasty movement and even good downward plain for his height, which was an anomaly. He was never a bag of balls out of the pen like Rogers and threw harder, with more movement and with nasty offspeed stuff. Rogers is not in the same league.

Rogers is a guy of one or two innings, no more .... Stuff?--- Hittable Fastball and limited secondary stuff = Long reliever or AAAA SP
flafson Verified Member Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 If the problem is the inning count then he will figure it out in time, if not then it was all a dream.

Stuff?--- Hittable Fastball and limited secondary stuff = Long reliever or AAAA SP Disagree and not trying to be disengeniois here but think you might be used to seeing the weak 2-pitch reliever with sketchy command. As a reliever I was calling for a DFA. I think that he's an awful reliever. As a starter I saw better command and a better mix and a more prepared pitcher. The fastball might be hittable if left wherever but when commanded its darn good. As a starter he showed that command until the innings racked up. As a reliever he was junk- period!
