Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 AA shouldn't go 1 cent over slot for Bickford. A lefthander who touches 97 is a bigger get then a hard throwing righthander with no feel for secondary pitches.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 I prefer the jays approach of drafting big armed lefties in the later rounds whether because of injuries or overslot demands. Last year Borucki, this year Brentz

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Author Posted June 19, 2013 Boston - Trey Ball Jays - Bickford Rays Stanek
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Again Jake McGee Vs Latos lol Are you serious, now you're overrating Bickford. If he signs overslot, watch you guys turn on him if he isn't Matt latos

A lefthander who touches 97 is a bigger get then a hard throwing righthander with no feel for secondary pitches. That's not the scouting report at all. Plus fastball, with plus command. How many guys throw 97mph out of HS with plus command? Some scouts expect his velocity to tick up a notch or two as well. Additionally no HS pitcher has legitimate MLB plus off-speed pitches, Bickford has a couple offerings that scouts like and expect to improve. Furthermore he is one of the youngest players in the draft, meaning he isn't as far in to his development curve as most HS pitchers. Brentz throws it hard and is a lefty but he also doesn't have secondaries. Brentz is very raw and doesn't have the same FB control as Bickford. Furthermore signing Bickford (unless way over-slot which is highly unlikely) shouldn't impact signing Brentz one way or the other.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 It's definitely a good strategy IMO as well. It seems every year there will be a couple guys that drop. With the ability to punt picks, that would yield lesser talent anyways, to create cap space it seems like a no-brainer to me.
ReturnOfTheYeti Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 So are there ONLY 3 teams in the AL East w/o their 1st unsigned? EDIT: Okay, reading another post, all 5 teams in the AL East still have to sign their 1st picks. Wait and see I guess.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 So are there ONLY 3 teams in the AL East w/o their 1st unsigned? Nope, all of the AL East picks are unsigned; http://www.baseballamerica.com/draftdb/2013xrnd.php?rnd=1 Yankees - Judge and Clarkin Baltimore - Harvey Tampa Bay - Stanek, Ciuffo Boston - Ball Toronto - Bickford

In theory yes but it depends what Bickford's expections are and what Brentz's expections are. Plus losing a first round pick only to get another in a more talented draft class next year is not a bad end game. Im just saying Brickford is an overdraft and he shouldn't be paid as if he is dropped a few spots. Im mostly likely missing something here but They have to play hardball
Ziggyy108 Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 I didnt follow the draft at all this year .... If the Jays sign most of their top talent guys .... how would you grade their draft??? any info would be great I personally love that they loaded up on high school arms. ive wanted them to do this the past couple years now and instead watched as they took some guys early like Jacob Anderson and Dwight Smith Jr.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Btw Stanek is a beautiful value draft for the rays. They have gutierrez dominating the low minors. Its clockwork over there

Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Brentz is a athlete Bickford is a young pitcher And what does AA love more then gyro meat, Athletes and I 100% agree especially later in the draft.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Nah, you're not really missing anything. Guys that throw that hard with FB command and secondaries are impossible to get without paying an arm and a leg, AA can't expect him to come cheap. However as you stated there is no reason to overpay as the same pick next year will likely yield more talent. AA needs to hold firm, offer a reasonable amount but not dip in to his budget savings -- the strength of this draft relies on AA getting some of those rd +10 over-slot guys signed. OT but FWIW we could see a rotation of; Tirado Bickford Brentz Gonzales DeJong in the GCL this year. That would be an extremely fun rotation to follow.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Author Posted June 19, 2013 And what does AA love more then gyro meat, Athletes and I 100% agree especially later in the draft. Oh yeah, Athletes like: Jacob Anderson, Chris Hawkins or Michael Crouse

That would be an extremely fun rotation to follow. Wait, Gonzales is starting? I thought he was a reliever. Good, though, that would be an EPIC rotation to follow. Tirado/Bickford/Brentz is 1/2/3 that probably has some of the most upside in the minors.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 If they sign all of their first 10 picks and one of Brentz/Tellez it will be a B- draft IMO. People aren't happy with the number of pitchers selected but, AA went upside early and signability in the later budgeted rounds. AA didn't have the flexibility this year to have a true A+ draft but, he seemed to get value all over the board which is my main concern but, the lack of impact bats selected (especially because AA passed on a couple good ones in rounds 2/3/4) brought the quality of the draft down a bit IMO.

If he had gone for a Ryon Healy or something I would have liked this draft a lot more but if one of those two DOES sign then it's not a bad draft.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Oh yeah, Athletes like: Jacob Anderson, Chris Hawkins or Michael Crouse Crouse is quietly having a great year. Plus CF defence with 115 wRC+, .346 wOBA as a 22yo in Dunedin. He's due for a promotion soon!

Tirado/Bickford/Brentz is 1/2/3 that probably has some of the most upside in the minors. I thought the plan was to start him? I could be wrong, plans change all the. That being said I expect AA will piggy-back all of them as SP early in their professional careers and move them to the BP as they grow in to that role.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Oh yeah, Athletes like: Jacob Anderson, Chris Hawkins or Michael Crouse Crouse was drafted in like the 30th round so thats a risk you take every draft because of his huge tools. Hawkins and Anderson are just bad.

If he had gone for a Ryon Healy or something I would have liked this draft a lot more but if one of those two DOES sign then it's not a bad draft. Passing on Tyler O'Neil and Jon Denney in the third really irked me. AA was looking for someone to go around slot at that pick and avoided the big bonus guys

I honestly have no clue haha, but I don't think he holds up as a starter long term. Passing on Tyler O'Neil and Jon Denney in the third really irked me. AA was looking for someone to go around slot at that pick and avoided the big bonus guys Oh god, those two. That really sucked.

Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 He must have huge contact issues. What about D.J Davis, is he in short season?
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Ya and I think I read he had a terrible extended spring training as well. He doesn't make nearly enough contact at this point and does need to repeat the level but, I'm a big believer in the bat. I'll ride the Anderson bandwagon in to the sunset though :D
