IBTrini Verified Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Someone, in detail, please describe the Delabar program. I believe this link gives an idea of what is involved: http://www.playersdugout.com/functional-fitness-training.asp
torontofan Verified Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 Every one of our pitchers should be on the Delabar program before all the other teams start getting in on it too. There are enough gimmicks out there, but with Delabar and Cecil adding a seemingly unheard of amount of velocity throughout the program, and staying healthy *knock on wood* so far, there is a lot to think this might be legit. Earlier reports on McGowan were mixed, with Toronto org guys saying he still had awesome stuff but other reports saying he was throwing around 90-91 MPH. To hear he was throwing that hard is pretty awesome! I thought I read last night that he was sitting around 93-95 MPH from a twitter feed.
KSaw Verified Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 It seems to me McGowan will be a bullpen option. Don't you guys think that McGowan would've started the game if the Jays planned on having him start in MLB after participating in ST and staying in ExST for all of April and half of May? Why would he only pitch 1 inning? He's eligible to come off the DL on May 30th, so are 2 weeks enough for him to build up from 1 inning to 6 innings? Doubt it. Look at JJ, he hasn't pitched since April 21st or something and he won't be back till June. McGowan is coming out of the BP. He was pitching on 2 days rest. He had just pitched 1.2 innings in an Extended Spring Training Game prior to beginning his rehab assignment. I imagine that he'll be on a 30 pitch count for at least one more appearance, followed by 3 days rest and a 4 inning start. Then increase innings from there on 4 days rest.
KSaw Verified Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 That would add up to 1 more brief appearance, an innings limited start and 2 full starts by the 30th or 31st.

We'll see what happens, but why wasn't he stretched out a bit more in ExST, didn't he make an appearance with the Jays in ST?
KSaw Verified Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 We'll see what happens, but why wasn't he stretched out a bit more in ExST, didn't he make an appearance with the Jays in ST? He's thrown some recent simulated games. Throwing 90+ pitches shouldn't be an issue. I think they they're just being careful and easing him back into game action. He has thrown 40 or so live in game pitches since Saturday.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 If called up, would we use him as a SP or RP? What do you guys think? With the state of our rotation I'd like to see him start, but that might make him more susceptible to injuries. Possibly, though I remember the Jays saying before having him work multiple days in the week out of the pen would make him more susceptible to injury. I remember back in 2011 they said they'd rather just have McGowan throw every 5th day rather than have an uncertain schedule. Might be used out of the BP first and then eased back into the rotation.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2013 Posted May 15, 2013 McGowan's going to pull a Big carp, here's hoping.
fireballW Verified Member Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 McGowan is coming back as a starter, I don't get why people think he isn't. It's all the Jays have stated since the start of his rehab. No, they definitely backed off that after last years injuries and made it sound like he would come back as a reliever. But then this spring they started kind of giving mixed signals again. Like other people said though, it'd be kind of strange for him to be only throwing one inning yesterday if he was going to be coming back as a starter. At this point some more starting pitching dept would be pretty great though!

Now we do and he will be stretched out over the next couple of weeks.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Fwiw Not that Wilner is any kind authority on anything related to baseball, but all the signs point to him being a reliever. Another guy who is now a reliever is John Stilson. I've said this on this thread already, but when a guy has been throwing all ST, is kept in ExST pitching in games and then makes his first appearance in class A and only throws 1 inning, that means he's being used as a reliever. Look at Sean Nolin, stayed back in ExST because of an injury (groin?), and on his first start went 3+. On his 2nd start went 6. This team could use a reliever also. Maybe McGowan and Stison/Carreno can provide options as relievers. Look, Santos may be done for the year. Rogers is not a 7/8th inning guy. Delabar has struggled with command and would be the only righty Gibbons would be comfortable with late in games. At least guys like McGowan, Stilson, Carreno would give the team more righty options to complement the 3 lefties to match up against teams.

KSaw Verified Member Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Wilner may be correct in that the club is saying that he'll relieve. I just don't believe anything that they claim in regard to injured players anymore. I think that McGowan will be fit in where the club has a need. What I do find interesting is that when Dustin was put on the 60-Day DL it was not originally made retroactive to March 30th. That was a move made later on. Clearly McGowan is progressing well because he wasn't projected back until the second week of June.

I'm sure Wilner is an expert on burger and rib joints, but he says what he's told to say when it comes to baseball. he used to have his own opinion, but now he's a company man
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Fwiw Isn't this the same guy who said there was no chance they would trade for Dickey? or was that Blair?
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Agreed entirely, especially so with the bolded paragraph. 2 innings of lights out stuff from McInjured every 3 or 4 days would be great.
KSaw Verified Member Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Saying that Dustin will start would be like saying that Johnson isn't coming back soon and sure would get into the heads of Jenkins, Ortiz and Romero.

KSaw Verified Member Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Joking aside- you are right. He has his own opinions. He's just a glass half full homer for the most part.

I have my problems with Wilner.... but people don't like him because he doesn't grab a pitch fork and run with the angry fans...... Apparently you must want Gibbons fired if you are to have your own opinion. Listen to the idiots he has to deal with nightly.

That said, he also seems to go into every call assuming that the caller is an idiot who knows less than he. I'd say that a good 20% are informed but he still talks down to them. Even a guy like Jim Rome historically has stretched out discussions with informed callers when he has done phone segments. He would also thank them for being adding to his show. IMO Wilner should do a bit of this. For those old enough to remember, Mark Hebscher and Bob McEgo would each rip callers and cut them off but when they got a good one they'd listen and let the caller talk. They'd even break for commercial and bring good callers back after the break. When has Wilner ever done that?

It used to be funny when he ripped fans apart, but now its old and tired. He goes into every call assuming the caller is an idiot and there have been times callers have made valid points, but Wilner just has to play the homer card and try to make them look stupid. He pretty much just says the same thing over and over and doesn't really offer much insight at all other than throwing out basic stats that anyone can lookup. He simply caters to the general fan who have limited understanding of the game and no knowledge of advanced stats. People like that eat this s*** up and that's really all that matters from his perspective.
KSaw Verified Member Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Adding the phrase, "Why do you think that," to his on air reputoire would do wonders.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Wilner thinks he knows everything about baseball and then proceeds to state that Litsch was a great pitcher and that Cecil can be an ace lol. When I was 14 and listening to him I thought he was smart for using stats like FIP and BABIP but I've realized he doesn't know much about that stuff at all.

KSaw Verified Member Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 Lets be fair. WHIP is a good stat and many of his listeners would be lost if he talked like a Saber-geek, even if he was able.
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 16, 2013 Posted May 16, 2013 WHIP is not a good stat. It's marginally better than ERA, and a dubious stat at best.
