G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 @ShiDavidi: Drew Hutchison to throw live BP in three weeks. Kyle Drabek to start BP next week or week after. Both happy with progress @ShiDavidi: Dustin McGowan to start rehab stint next week. Seeing good results from weighted ball program. @gregorMLB: Santos still experiencing some minor soreness in his right triceps muscle. Described it as normal soreness. #BlueJays @gregorMLB: McGowan joins Delabar, Cecil and Janssen who are on the program. Former #BlueJays reliever Jason Frasor started in the offseason as well.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 McGowan is a write-off. Whatever. I doubt Santos will ever be healthy. I doubt Drabek will ever be able to throw strikes. Only guy that intrigues me there is Hutch. Was super impressed with him last year even though he was called up way too early.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Awesome, can't wait for Drabek and Hutch. McGowan'll probably get injured again and I have a horrible feeling about Santos.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Interesting that Janssen and McGowan are on the program. If Janssen could pick up a few mph he'd go from top-tier to truly elite. I don't know how much it can help McGowan since he doesn't seem to need the extra velocity, but perhaps they think it'll help strengthen the shoulder or something.
admin Site Manager Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 I was a McGowan supporter up until his last injury. I felt I hung in there pretty long compared to most people. But I've finally given up.
SantosLHalper21 Verified Member Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Santos' problem is he may be throwing too hard. With not a lot of experience as a pitcher, I still feel his "form" and "technique" could still use some work so he doesn't injure himself more and more. Glad to see Hutch making lots of progress. Drabek I feel could be a great pitcher if he gets fastball command...that's a big IF though. McGowan...I'm not so hopeful about.

Not sure how that might happen exactly but...

The results speak for themself. WHIP of .273 so far this year so far lol
admin Site Manager Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Janssen is already elite. The results speak for themself. WHIP of .273 so far this year so far lol Game yesterday just showed that he's on another level. Just painted the outside corner the whole inning. Not the actual outside corner, but the outside corner where the ump was calling it, 2-4" outside.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Janssen is already elite. The results speak for themself. WHIP of .273 so far this year so far lol agree Janssen is elite. You don't need to strikeout 16 guys by 9 inning to belong to the elite group.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Janssen is already elite. The results speak for themself. WHIP of .273 so far this year so far lol I'd think elite would be the Kimbrel's and Chapman's, no?

Hutch should take buerhle's spot when he's back.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 I'd think elite would be the Kimbrel's and Chapman's, no? I'd throw Janssen in that mix. He doesn't have 100MPH fastball but he also doesn't have to rely on one pitch to get a guy out.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 I'd think elite would be the Kimbrel's and Chapman's, no? Those guys are amazing closers but really don't think I'd take them over Janssen right now. Those guys can lose the strikezone at times and I don't think that's something we have to worry about with Janssen.
wilko Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Any kind of setback for McGowan after this, I'd just pull the pin and call it a day. Santos might be on the DL forever it seems. He has some nasty stuff but can't stay healthy.
Clomero Verified Member Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 the mcgowan extension is unforgivable, you have to have zero understanding of injuries/contracts to give him that dollar that alone should have fired AA
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 McGowan will be back and its great the Blue Jays have not given up on him! Its not our money so who cares if they want to use it to keep hopes up on McGowan.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 I'd throw Janssen in that mix. He doesn't have 100MPH fastball but he also doesn't have to rely on one pitch to get a guy out. Craig Kimbrel had a 1.75 FIP in 2012. He put up 3.3 wins. Casey Janssen is not in that mix.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 All I can say is if Janssen keeps this up its safe to say hes going to the ASG.
Sparky12 Verified Member Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Cant wait to have Drabek and Hutch back, will provide great depth for us. Sure would be nice if Santos could stay healthy, just filthy stuff and he really improves our pen. Don't expect anything from Mcgowan but you never know.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Janssen leads baseball with a 0.83 FIP (min. 10 IP) and has 0.7 WAR already. He's better than he was last year, and definitely might be making that jump. I need a bit more sample size. If he continues he's obviously elite, and I REALLY want him to be elite, but right now, he hasn't proven it, you know? He's one of my favorite players, but I don't think he's a 3 win CP. If he is, though, that's really awesome. I really want him to continue.

I am excited at the thought of Hutch coming back. I have some very high hopes for him and expect him to be a fixture in the rotation next season after JJ walks.
KSaw Verified Member Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 McGowan is also throwing 96 at X-ST. He's been ready for a rehab assignment for a couple weeks now. I mentioned yesterday that he should be starting rehab in under 10 days and added that it would be really fishy if he didn't. He's likely going to start his minor league games btw and stretch out as a starter. Here we go again.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 They may as well stretch him out. He needs the innings, and if he comes up, he'll probably be the long man.

CHRIS Verified Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Wouldn't that be a great addition to the team of he can actually stay healthy, big if tho Especially now that we're short on starters.
KSaw Verified Member Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 He has Chris Carpenter talent, though different pitchers. One with the nasty 12-6 curve and the other with the sick Juan Guzman in his prime moving fastball, with a wipe out slider. I only mention them together because of the injury histories. Dustin could pull a Carp, become a terrific reliever or fade away all together. It is really is so up in the air. All that said, there really isn't 25 people on the planet who can pitch as well as a healthy McGowan.
