DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 This lowers the chances he gets called up so that's a positive. I'd like Stroman to get 5-6 starts in AA and if he's doing well, send him to AAA for the rest of the season. Call him up in Sept only. I thought the same needed to be done with Nolin, but AA saw to that. I also think the same should be done with Hutchison once he's healthy. Think long term AA, you used to, but in the last 6 months have forgotten all about it for some reason. Stroman could definitely help the Jays out of the BP this season which, I'd love to see after the AS break as he reaches his IP limit. I don't really see the need to rush him up as a SP. There are guys in AAA/waiver wire who could probably do a similar job for the spot start or two the Jays are looking to fill.

They've made a decision to let him start, let the process take its course. They have Stilson in AAA now as a reliever, who was also tried as a starter, but many people saw him as a reliever all the way and he may help. If McGowan actually stays healthy for a bit, that would be another bullpen option although I wouldn't count on it. If the guys in AAA/waiver wire could do a similar job for the spot start or 2, why the heck was Nolin brought up? Not to mention Jenkins hasn't pitched since he started in Boston and Ortiz is one of those AAA/waiver guys, it's just mind-boggling at this point.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 What's his IP limit? I don't think they've said but, they seem intent on giving him lots of innings. IMO he'll probably get somewhere around ~140IP in 2013 but, that's just an educated guess. They've made a decision to let him start, let the process take its course. Yes, they should absolutely stretch him out now that they have started. That being said there will be a time towards the end of the season where Stroman can come up to TO, help the Jays win and get some invaluable experience -- without deviating from the plan. They have Stilson in AAA now as a reliever, who was also tried as a starter, but many people saw him as a reliever all the way and he may help. If McGowan actually stays healthy for a bit, that would be another bullpen option although I wouldn't count on it. Stilson has yet to give up a run in AAA, he's looked very good out of the pen. I'm excited to see what he can do going forward. Don't forget Perez will be back at some point after the AS break and Carreno tearing it up as a closer the in AA. Come mid August the Jays should have lots of options to help fill out the BP, also some great depth to deal from in the off-season. I think the Jays just wanted a LHP, since BAL has struggled against them, for a spot start. I think the nerves got the best of Nolin. I was impressed with his stuff but, his command was all over the place. He'd probably got out of those jams in AA but, MLB hitters will crush mistakes. Hopefully he learned a lesson, goes back to the minors, applies the necessary changes and becomes a better pitcher in the long run.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Did McGowan get injured last night? He only threw 10 pitches I think and was then replaced.

ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 nope just finished out the 6th and that was all that was asked of him. Thanks. I was worried given his history. With Santos out again, he and Stilson could prove very helpful.

theblujay Verified Member Posted May 25, 2013 Author Posted May 25, 2013 Josh Johnson pitching today?
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Josh Johnson pitching today? Yeah I had it on in the background wasn't really paying attention but the announcers were raving about how good both pitchers looked (Gerrit Cole being the opponent)
theblujay Verified Member Posted May 25, 2013 Author Posted May 25, 2013 Yeah I had it on in the background wasn't really paying attention but the announcers were raving about how good both pitchers looked (Gerrit Cole being the opponent) Please hurry back Johnson. We need someone who can pitch
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 Johnson probably back the next open rotation turn. I don't think they can afford for him to make another rehab start. He went 4 innings and threw 68 pitches today.
Laika Community Moderator Posted May 25, 2013 Posted May 25, 2013 They could conceivably bring him back and give him a 90 pitch cap. I mean, why not? Desperation is the only sensible route at this point. They've backed themselves into this corner with no depth, now they need to do what they need to do. Too much invested in this season.

I was thinking about this and I think if they somehow, someway sneak into the playoffs it will be worth it for many fans. This year will seem like a success.

Throw McGowan, Drabek and Hutch out there too...what's there to lose other than their arms.
theblujay Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Author Posted May 26, 2013 Andy Burns: 3-4 SB(17) Pillar 2-3. Lansing has not hits through 5.
Caper Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Andy Burns: 3-4 SB(17) Pillar 2-3. Lansing has not hits through 5. Is Andy Burns a scrub or something more? I heard nothing about him until this year.
theblujay Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Author Posted May 26, 2013 Is Andy Burns a scrub or something more? I heard nothing about him until this year. I don't know much. He's 22 in Dunedin, plays in the infield. Listed as a SS, but playing 3B tonight. Good K:BB ratio, has some SB, has a little power.
BJBirdy Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 I had a great time in Buffalo today watching Johnson pitch. Here's a photo I found on Twitter. That's cool that the photographer captured Dustin McGowan (grey hoody) watching Johnson warm up: http://twitpic.com/ct5p6u
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Deck "Ready for MLB" McGuire 5 IP 9H 5ER 2BB 4 K busttttttt
GD Old-Timey Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Deck "Ready for MLB" McGuire 5 IP 9H 5ER 2BB 4 K And this is why Kevin Grey is bad
BJBirdy Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Kevin Ahrens is the real bust. He's a backup in AA. But Deck is definitely going to be a bust in my opinion. It's not because he doesn't work hard, he just doesn't have the talent.
theblujay Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Author Posted May 26, 2013 Lopes 1-4 HR(4). Smith Jr. 2-4 SB(6).
ace3113 Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Julio Urias, 16 years old, pitched against Lansing today in his pro debut. 3 IP 6K 1BB 2H Touched 94 MPH That's the Mexican kid the Dogers signed right? Man, I was hoping we would go after him last year when our contract with Luis Castro was voided. That freed up about $800,000. Urias is a small lefty who has been compared to Johan Santana (as all short lefties inevitably are. lol) I figured with our success with Osuna, and Heredia's success with Pitt, he might be a good target.
Caper Verified Member Posted May 26, 2013 Posted May 26, 2013 Pillar 3 for 3 today with a walk. Guy has a gift for hitting.
StevieRay Verified Member Posted May 27, 2013 Posted May 27, 2013 I m wondering, why isn't Neil Wagner being called up. I mean if Mickey Story/Thad Weber, who I presume were not initially on the 40man roster, why wouldn't they call up Neil. Apparently he's got 3 digit heat and is current buffalo's closer.

And a lights out closer at that. Could be a perfect setup man... Closers come from nowhere... Burn bright and flame out fast... Maybe people in the know can tell us if his stuff is better or if he's just dominating lesser competition. I was wondering the same as you. Juan Perez is another guy, he looked like he had some dirty stuff in spring training and has done ok in Buffalo. Wonder why he hasn't got a look.

With some guys coming off the 60 day DL (McGowan has to soon) the Storey's and Webers get DFA'd. Wagner probably won't get his chance until it looks like he'll be able to stick for the year. It's similar to Negrych.
theblujay Verified Member Posted May 27, 2013 Author Posted May 27, 2013 Interesting He's a real sleeper, but as we know we're short on prospects who can hit.
