Not really a big deal. But he did have the best name in baseball :(

Man, Balbino had a lot of upside when he was signed... And he couldn't possibly more than like... 22 by now, could he? Man... Baseball is hard!

He really did seem like a good bet when he was signed... God, I was on this (okay, not this, but the official board) board when he was signed... That was 7 f***ing years ago...

f*** you kids, get off my lawn!

5 whole years ago, he made his debut at 17. I hope I'm not looking back in 5 years and thinking the same about guys like Barreto and Osuna lol.

Your math is wrong... :P If you're saying 5 years ago he made his debut at 17, then he's not 23 turning 24...

Also, I thought we signed him at 16, which is when I first heard about him. :P

Ah fack it's too late for math lol. Point is he debuted a long time ago.

So Dwight Smith is having a lovely start to his year. Which to me has gone rathee unnoticed to many. His power looks like it could improve, but Jesse Goldberg-Strassler said that: "his swing was quick, using all fields and patient approach at the plate."

I fully expect AA to trade him by the deadline.

You're right about that! But I was relying on your numbers for my points! If YOU'RE wrong, now I just look like an *******! :P

Yeah with that approach he's gone in no time.

He's not really all that great and I'm completely fine with marketing him as a trade chip. The system is chock full of pretty decent OF prospects (Davis, Alford, Pillar, Gose, Anderson, etc, etc) to go along with a strong MLB OF, and Smith's ceiling really isn't that high imo. If we could get a useful piece for him I'd be game.

You can look like an ******* without my help. :P

Only one guy there you listed has actually hit the ball consistently throughout his minor league career and as you know, Pillar's age/level issue has been beaten to death. Lol, I know you like Anderson, but aside from a good 3 weeks, he has been terrible, Gose can do everything but hit, Davis is even further away than Smith and Alford....lol.

I agree Smith's ceiling isn't as high as someone like Davis' or Gose, but Smith continues to hit well, a prospect which this system lacks badly. What good is upside if you can't reach it?

Zeroing in on this, why the f*** do people undervalue speed and defense so f***ing much?

What do you think Smith Jr's ceiling is? 2nd division starter? And why does being further away from the MLB cause you to s*** on Davis?

Thank god your opinion doesn't matter.

Coming from you.

I was hoping to get you a little more worked up then that.

You're generally good at that, but I'm too sick to have the energy. Good effort, though.

Smith could be an Alex Gordon type - 40 doubles, hits .300... that's a first-division player. He's a good prospect, not sure why we'd look to trade him.

I honestly don't see that kind of ceiling on him. Maybe it's just me. I'm not exactly an expert on prospects. Just don't like the kid and if we could get a useful piece for him I'd do it in a second.

Live? 0 lol. I've watched some video on him for whatever that's worth.

I love Smith a lot. I can't say the same about Jake Anderson.

Exactly! "Video" is probably a few grainy outdated Youtube clips.

Scouts like his hit tool, respected prospect guys think he could be first-division, and the Jays army of scouts are very high on him. I'm going to listen to those influences and think that Smith is a decent prospect.

Is this grainy or outdated?

How many times had YOU seen him play before slapping an Alex Gordon label on him?

I'm not saying he's a non-prospect or anything, and he's had a nice start to the year, but his numbers weren't exactly great last year and I don't like what I've seen of him.

I think Smith's ceiling is a 1st division starter personally, if I guy can hit nearly .300 with a good plate discipline and above average power, you don't see guys like that on the bench on top-tier teams.

Furthermore, I've yet to see one scouting report of him being a butcher in a corner outfield spot, granted he's not a fast runner, but I really don't think this organization undervalues athleticism, god forbid that I hope that the org keeps one of the few guys with a promising hit tool.

Also, I'm not s***ing on Davis, I'm pointing out the fact that so many times hitting prospects reach higher levels, when they suddenly find they can't hit a decent curveball. You'll find it out that proximity to the majors is a thing.

"If" a guy an hit .300. You're not seriously expecting him to hit .300?

Yes, he's a good fielder, so are the rest of our OF prospects lol.

Low A isn't exactly very close to the bigs either.

I never once implied that he would, you did ask me his upside, I gave it to you.

Indeed it isn't, and if Knecht and Crouse have shown anything is that weaknesses get horribly exposed with better pitching. Hopefully Smith's refinement holds up thru higher levels.

f*** me, I'm starting to sound more and more like Greenwood. lol

My Dwight Smith review from his game against Johnny Cueto. If I walked up to the Lansing batting cage and watched the entire team just by approach and swing and someone said "who's a legit prospect?". I'd say Lopes way before Smith Jr. Just too many moving parts to be consistent. Like I say below, needs power to develop or he's pretty much never going to be a starter.

Smith Jr. - Makes Lawrie look like a statue out there. Way too much prep movement for my liking. When he does swing it's a nice level swing, his swing doesn't match the stats to date in my mind. I don't see him being a super low line drive guy. His leg kick isn't quite as prolific as I heard so I'm guessing he's cut it down. I can see him developing a bit more power but not enough to make him a corner OF threat. So he has to be a CF (can't speak for the defense specifically as I didn't see him make a play) or a 4th OF, not sure what happened to the experiment of him trying 2B but I'd like him a lot more if he added more positions. Appears to be a very smart ball player too.

Meh, I guess I misinterpreted the "if." I don't agree that's his upside but the general player type we can agree on. Good discipline, decent average, lots 'o doubles. I'm willing to bet he'll never reach Gordon's peak lol.

Oh god, is Michael Crouse actually still around? He suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. There's nothing more than I'd like for Smith to rise through levels mashing, though.

Never go full Greenwood.

My guess for a likely comp for Smith Jr. batting wise would be Eric Thames. So if he is a legit CF guy that's not bad at all. If he's not than he's ... well Eric Thames.
