I have no idea what Scheifele was thinking there. He's not typically a dirty player or even someone who throws the body. I'd like to say it just happened quickly and it was a mistake but he had his head up the whole way and had every intention of throwing a hit there.

Again.. Not sure what he was thinking. Brutal play.

Aren't most (all) body checks thrown with the player skating with his head up with every intention of throwing a hit? If you watch the Graves hit, he's got his head up and was hunting the Vegas player to hammer him the whole way. He made no attempt to go for the puck at all (which was long gone).

If he's jumped off the bench and thrown that hit, would it have been OK? I don't think the 200 foot skate makes any difference.

It 100% makes a sense. The hit was malicious and he had tons of time to think about what he was doing. Not to mention he flew in with an elbow right to the f***ing dome as well.

Dirtiest hit I've seen in a while. You can't just go full boar like that, picking up as much speed as you can across all 3 zones and then flying in with an elbow. It's f***ing insane.

I don't think it was an elbow at all. The arms come up after impact, which is typical in a follow through. I don't disagree with you - I think Scheifele should be suspended for like 25 games for a hit like that personally. I'm just talking about the nuances of the rule and other situations.

If it were 1995 - I suspect most people would say Evans needs to keep his f***ing head up and not put himself in such a vulnerable position. People love the old Wendell Clark hit on Bruce Bell. Was the Scheifele hit significantly worse than the Graves hit? Graves didn't have quite as much speed and the guy he hit didn't go off on a stretcher.

The league isn't there anymore. They did this right.

I'm wondering...if this was 2 months ago, does Scheifele only get 1-2 games...maybe just a fine. Is there a chance that how people reacted to the Tom Wilson non-suspension impacted how much they put their foot down for this play? Edited by Krylian

Apparently Scheifele's family is getting threats and being bullied with phone calls and online messages. His parent and his brother and sister. He got emotional talking about it.

People are the f***ing worst.

This sympathy card is way too easy for people to play. A small number of *******s are harassing his family members, it is what it is, just ignore/block them. There are no sincere threats to their safety because of your dirty hockey hit. If you feel that bad for your family then send them some of your money to make them feel better.

That's ******** man. I'm not going to accept that it's OK for *******s to harass people. These people are cowards and pussies - why the f*** would you harass his sister or parents?

Do you tell the teenager who's been harassed at school to just ignore them? Is that no real threat too? When does it become a real threat and how can you say that without knowing what they are saying (or how often)?

It's not "okay" it just doesn't warrant any sympathy in this context. Meaningless and insincere threats and forms of harassment through social media are unfortunately part of our world. They don't mean anything and they should just be ignored. Scheifele drawing attention to them, intentional or not, only serves to deflect attention away from what HE did wrong. No amount of pundits saying it is bad to harass people on social media is actually going to prevent the trolls from actually harassing people on social media.

You see offenders and transgressors play this card all the time these days. Boo f***ing hoo.

Honestly, if my kid turned into a wildly successful professional athlete making millions of dollars you could all PM me a death threat every morning for breakfast.

Yes, death prognostications are fine as long as they're sent during breakfast.

The North division is pathetic. Whoever the Habs face net is going to steamroll them.

Montreal has a terrible team but it’s the NHL.

An expansion team recently were three wins away from the holy grail. The Habs can win the championship at this rate.

A team just out powerplayed another team 4-2, while being outshot 44-19 and won the game 5-4. They lead the series 3-2, while being heavily out played in games 1, 2, 3 and 5.

The NHL need not be taken seriously, ever.

I don't know what to think of the NHL anymore. They have changed the league structure and rules quite a bit.

In the last seven years or so every finals matchup seems to feature one random/lucky team against one good/expected team.

It certainly feels like the league is super random and the days of legitimately superior talent shining through in the form of dynasty teams are over... but if you look at the last 15 years or so as a whole, A LOT of the teams making the finals are exceptional. Boston has been there several times, Chicago when they were good, Pittsburgh like four times, Tampa Bay, the Kings were amazing when they won two, everyone expected Ovechkin to eventually get one... arguably the only super fluky winner in recent history was St Louis. Definitely a number of random finalists who ended up losing though.

Baseball is just as bad for this. The playoffs are probably more of a crapshoot than hockey. This is why most people hate the idea of expanded MLB playoffs.

If you want a sport where the best teams win more often, Basketball is your jam. Barring injuries, the cream rises in that league because the scoring is so granular, stars run the game and have massive impact, and they play long series.

Most, if not all, of those teams that won were close (like puck bouncing off generic chucklehead’s skate close in triple overtime of game 7) to getting knocked out much earlier than round 4, IIRC.

I agree with you about baseball. That’s why I will probably stop watching after this year or next year. Whenever they start allowing sub .500 teams in the postseason. Following that, I’m sure all four pro sports leagues in North America will need to have a minimum number of women or trans women on the active roster at all times. Have a salary cap where the cap and the floor have a razor thin margin so all 30+ teams can finish .500 while we all stroke each other with excitement! Can we just say everyone wins the championship going forward, please?!

Guess I’ll just have to find new interests.

You're overreacting. It's fine to not like .500 teams winning championships but if that makes you bloviate about women in sport and think about finding new interests, well....

1) you might need new blood pressure pills

2) see ya!

There was supposed to be some humor in that post. Guess I didn’t highlight that well. It’s somewhat true though. Look what happened in the OHL last week.

I have zero interest in co-ed sports at the highest levels and I do think that’s inevitable as well. I know that probably makes me a terrible person.

What happened in the OHL? Taya Currie getting drafted?

She said she wants to be treated like everyone else. If she's not good enough she won't make the team. She played AAA with the boys, maybe she's good enough to play a bit. I know lots of boys from my year who got drafted to the O for no real reason at all, other than personal connections and stuff. They had no realistic shot to play.

Co-ed sports at the highest level are only inevitable in sports where there can be a woman physically talented enough to hang. Hard to imagine but there could be niche cases and there would nothing wrong with it. It would actually be v cool. If the basic idea turns you off then you're blatantly sexist.

Currie probably would have gone higher if she wasn't committed to the NCAA route. It doesn't make sense for her to go the OHL route anyway.

She was definitely deserving of being picked. The OHL Draft is full of friendly/family favours, parents throwing $$$ around, nepotism and general corruption. And I say this as someone who used to work in the league. I was glad to see she got picked but I do think it would have been funny if she went undrafted after the OHL spent weeks hyping her up as the first girl to ever be picked.

People were melting down when she wasn't taken in the first few rounds. There would have been serious outrage if she didn't get picked.

Lol, the OHL is a massive old boys club. There's nothing activist about the OHL draft. She played a high level of hockey and did well and was deserving of getting picked.

A co-workers son just got drafted into the OHL. He was teammates with Taya Currie. The feedback is that she's very good. Only 5'7", so on the small side, which will make it harder as the competition increases. But she definitely deserved getting drafted from what I've heard.

Truthfully, if there is some freak female athlete that can do it, then yes, there is nothing wrong with it.

Looks suspicious though. Could just be a step in the direction of allowing (mandating) everyone to play at the highest levels, regardless of talent level. It’s very much a trend these days to act like women are up against it like it’s the 1920s. And if you don’t agree with the liberal agenda pushing, you are a horrible person who should lose their job. The OHL draft smells like activism. Could be wrong though.

uh huh

The best goalies from each AAA loop tend to get picked and from most accounts she was one of the best in the Alliance. Like most late round picks, she's a longshot to actually make the league, but that's fine. Likely on track to play junior and then NCAA

Holy f*** the Avs are shifting the bed hard.

It's a travesty that this series isn't the cup finals or conference finals. The NHL is embarrassing. Both teams are worthy of moving on far more than Montreal is.
