Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 It is f***ing dumb. All this is about is Selig trying to measure his dick over the war on steroids. If he suspends arod for over 200 games he is going to feel like he is the big s***. I am not an Arod fan by any means and even I can tell you that this is f***ed. I hope Arod comes out of this with a well reduced sentence so Selig looks like the f*** wad he is. For me, it depends on exactly what A-Rod's involvement with the clinic was. If he really was some kind of partner and was actively recruiting players to the clinic (which I think I recall was suggested at one point) after MLB's policy was in effect, then I don't blame them one bit for trying to get him banned for as long a period as possible. If they're just trying to make an example of him and his level of involvement is the same as the other guys who got 50 to 65 games, then I hope A-Rod wins the appeal. Not to mention, I love the idea of the Yankees having to pay him as much of his salary as possible

Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted November 15, 2013 Posted November 15, 2013 JA Happ + Izturis for Phillips! I had a nightmare that the Jays traded Hutchison for Hanigan, then I somehow magically ended up in Anthopoulos' office and shoved his fountain pen up his nostril. Unfortunately, the former part of the dream is the conceivable scenario.

It really just doesn't make sense that he'd be so motivated to implicate himself further by openly recruiting people for this clinic. First, there has to be risk involved on his part there, and two, how much would they have to pay him for it to be worth it? IMO, it's ********. It makes absolutely no sense.

I have no idea if it's true or not, but people do incredibly stupid things all the time. Players stealing stuff out of teammates lockers for example. Just because it doesn't make sense to a rationally thinking person doesn't mean it didn't happen. Anyhow, my point is that if he was actively participating in encouraging or helping others to cheat as well, then MLB should absolutely nail him with everything they possibly can. If he was just a regular user like the others appear to be, then Selig needs to just give him the same fine and stop being an idiot.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Who here is advocating paying him like a 4 win pitcher? Nobody. We have the ability to look at park adjusted numbers and make decisions off of them. Pretty sure that's what the majority here are using. I'm not comfortable in giving Colon $16 million over 2 years, that's just my opinion. He's 41 and we've seen pitchers regress at that age. He's been great for Oakland the past two seasons, though I don't think you can expect him to carry that same value moving forward.

I'd bet he has 5-6 teams willing to offer 1 year around 6-8M, none offering 2 years at double that, and he just picks where he wants to play.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 You'd seriously have to be lost in a fog not to take Colon at $5M. I said Colon on a one year deal worth $5 million would be a nice sign and would be worth the risk. Though if Oakland offers that same amount, what makes you think he'd choose Toronto over Oakland?
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 Actually no, that would unbalance us. Johnson already has too much chin. Out on Colon. Jaysblue was right. Don't know why you mentioned me in this post, but alright.
Nox Verified Member Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 He's 41 and we've seen pitchers regress at that age. 41 year old pitchers project to be worse than the previous season? Thanks Tips. He's been great for Oakland the past two seasons, though I don't think you can expect him to carry that same value moving forward. Again, who's arguing that he's going to be the same pitcher? If Colon were guaranteed to give a team 8 wins over the next 2 years, he'd justifiably command $60M on the open market. But since he's old as f*** and projects to produce nowhere near that amount, 2/$16M is pretty reasonable. I even agree with you, I don't think I'd want to commit $16M to him either. I would not be surprised if he doesn't put up 2 WAR combined over the next 2 seasons. But you're falsely intimating that he needs to perform like he has in Oakland to justify 2/16. That's wrong.

Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted November 16, 2013 Posted November 16, 2013 A Rod is stinking rich. It really just doesn't make sense that he'd be so motivated to implicate himself at all, by continuing to take illegal/banned substances. So he's already proven to not be the sharpest knife in the drawer and/or not really taking the risks involved very seriously. And, in that kind of situation, money need not be the motivating factor. You find a guy willing and able to provide you with your illegal/banned substances, you develop a business relationship/friendship, you might recommend him to other people and help his business grow, without additional financial motivation. ARod's a complete tool. You may not have the mindset of a complete tool, so as to understand just where he's coming from. You view the world differently, so what makes sense to you, may not make sense to him, and vice versa. It makes plenty of sense that he'd keep using, though I sort of doubt that he still is. He won't catch Bonds, but he can catch others. Recruiting for a clinic makes no sense. First, he's putting his enormous salary on the line and I very much doubt his finders fees approach 20 million bucks. Then he'd know that getting caught would further damage his chances of getting into the HOF. My theory: MLB is getting players to give false testimony to implicate A Rod so they get their witch and the players get a slap on the wrist instead of something more severe.

Trade us that bust Profar for Arencibia. 3.) Sit back and watch Arencibia and Cano hit a combined 60 homers as you ride into the playoffs. Awwwwwyeah.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Niemann was outrighted today. He could be an interesting target for the 5th slot in the rotation depending on how his rehab is going. If he fails, we have lots of kids that can step in, and he should come cheap.

jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Tim Hudson signs with the Giants. Didn't see this posted anywhere yet. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/tim-hudson-heads-west-joins-giants/ It's not a bargain, though Hudson can still be a solid mid-rotation guy if healthy, especially in that ballpark. I didn't think he'd get $23 million over two years, though we're talking Brian Sabean here. San Francisco is a good place for him though. With the Lincecum signing and now the Hudson signing by the Giants, it will be interesting to see what someone like Colon or Haren now get on the open market. The price for starting pitching via free agency seems like it's going to be high this offseason. Thank you Mr. Sabean.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted November 18, 2013 Posted November 18, 2013 Damn, rough day today. Hudson and Ruiz were two of the players I thought made the most sense here. I would have liked both here as well, though I'm not that disappointed about the Jays missing out on them. Likely they both would have expected more $ from the Jays to sign here so you're likely looking at $50 million upwards locked up in two players 35 and older.
