Who here is advocating paying him like a 4 win pitcher? Nobody.

We have the ability to look at park adjusted numbers and make decisions off of them. Pretty sure that's what the majority here are using.

Exactly. All he has to do is better than Happ for 5M and I'd take him.

You'd seriously have to be lost in a fog not to take Colon at $5M.

Actually no, that would unbalance us. Johnson already has too much chin.

Out on Colon. Jaysblue was right.

Dat chin!!!

Keith Law chat going on right now. Some highlights:

Max (Delaware)

Thanks for the #AnalyticsPlant earlier. As a Phillies fan, is my disdain for the front office's decision making justified?

Klaw (1:03 PM)

Quite. By the way, has anyone else noticed that these above-market, early-offseason deals Ruben hands out with such abandon all go to clients of his own former agents, the Levinson brothers? Ibanez, Papelbon, and Byrd all come to mind. If I were ownership, I'd be looking at that relationship more closely.

Ryan (Hanover, PA)

How can we change the voting system in baseball to avoid flat out homerism?? PS-The guy who voted Trout #7 should be forced to go on an all McDonald's diet.

Klaw (1:09 PM)

That would be Bill Ballew, the same guy who IIRC doesn't own a cell phone. I also enjoyed him calling himself a "strict constructionist" while making up his own arbitrary criterion that said a player can't win the award if his team doesn't go to the playoffs. Hey, Bill, strict constructionism means ... pretty much the opposite of what you did.

Here's another good one:

Mike (San Diego)

I have to say, I really appreciate how much you engage with fans on twitter. I'm currently in a discussion with a facebook friend on closer value and Kimbrel's value specifically. He is a Braves fan who just said if the Braves didn't have a dominant closer and only got 30 saves from one guy, they would be below .500. How do you not get more concussions from banging your head against a table when you read those types of tweets?

Klaw (1:30 PM)

I got vaccinated against that strain of stupidity before taking this job. More proof that vaccines are safe and effective.

one regarding Stroman (kind of interesting since KLAW doesn't like him as a starter overly):

Iain (Toronto)

Assuming the Jays look to their minor leagues for a 5th starter this year (i'm also assuming they go get a 3/4 guy somehow), where do you place your bet? Stroman? Hutchison? Drabek? other?

Klaw (1:37 PM)

Stroman, probably over Hutchison as the latter may have a limited workload as he returns from injury.

a few more:

Greg (DC)

The argument for Molina is basically that he helps the pitching staff in ways that can't be captured by WAR or any other statistical measure. Do you disagree with the premise or just think that whatever value that adds can't make up the gap with McCutchen?

Klaw (1:48 PM)

I disagree with the premise. He helps with framing, he helps shut down the running game, but we at least have attempts to measure those things. The Cardinals have, what, a million guys who throw in the upper 90s? Can we at least think about the possibility that maybe they're really good at scouting and developing pitchers?

Bob (Springfield, MO)

I appreciate you continuing to bang the drum for advanced stats and advanced ways of measuring players. It will take quite a while for the new breed to take over, but eventually it will happen. BTW, I know you don't use WAR as your go-to stat, but it sure is handy for those of us who don't have the time or interest to really dig into the stats and make comparison charts. It is quick and dirty, but not often wrong.

Klaw (1:49 PM)

I would call it directionally correct, rather than precise. It's a good starting point, but when filling out a ballot, I like to consider all the components as well as what the stat might be missing.

Dan (Tulsa)

If you're running the Cards, which SP's are you willing to move for a significant upgrade at SS? Is it a win-win for them if they deplete enough depth that they're "forced" to give Rosenthal a shot at starter?

Klaw (1:50 PM)

Kelly first, Lynn second. Miller's the one you keep.

Interesting.

Max Frutchman (Toronto)

You mentioned in a past chat that the Jays should have taken JP Crawford with their first pick this year. Do you think they can get a comparable talent at 11 in 2014 given the depth of the draft?

Klaw

(1:58 PM)I wouldn't bank on it.

Regarding Hanigan :

John (Cincinnati, Oh)

Re: Hannigan available. What do you think the Reds can get? He was terrible last year, but was over .350 obp every previous season.

Klaw (2:01 PM)

He's also 33 now, and a lot of those high OBPs came from batting at the bottom of the lineup, often with the pitcher or a lousy hitter behind him. I think he's a quality backup.

Trade proposal with Rangers:

G to the C (Toronto)

Does an Encarnacion Jannsen for Kinsler Holland trade make sense for both teams?

Klaw (1:48 PM)

Not for Toronto.

Gammons on absurd trade rumours:

-

One of the increasing frustrations for general managers is trade rumors that take on lives of their own, even if they are without substance. If it gets printed, it gets on mlbtraderumors.com—which I like—and becomes non-fiction. Blue Jays officials talking to another club ridiculed the notion that they would trade Jose Bautista for Domonic Brown; the Jays don’t even like Brown. The Orioles were angered that it was reported they were considering trading J.J. Hardy to St. Louis; in fact, the Cards asked if Hardy were available, but were told no.

“That’s different from the discussion of whether or not a Ranger-Dodger swap of Ian Kinsler for Andre Ethier makes sense,” said one club official at the meetings. “That makes some sense, as Kinsler would replace Michael Young with his ability to play so many positions, and the Rangers could use Ethier.”

Rumors, even the stupid ones, keep the offseason fun and interesting. It's annoying at times but nothing you can do.

Fun for us. Annoying for Anthopoulos and Duquette in these cases I'm sure.

Tom (CA)

Klaw, Schoenfield seems to think the Reds will actually get a decent return for Brandon Phillips - I am somewhat pessimistic. Do you think they could get a return of actual major league value - either now or in the future? Like say, Phillips for Castellanos in Detroit?

Klaw (2:18 PM)

More likely they get a major league return, an everyday guy or a mid-rotation starter, rather than a prospect. I don't think Walt's in the market for prospects right now.

JA Happ + Izturis for Phillips!:)

Looks like some more fun in the A-Rod case. Looks like they're afraid of having him testify or he could get an even longer suspension...

But over the past few days, sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPNNewYork.com there was trepidation about Rodriguez testifying for fear that the league could bring further discipline against him if investigators found him to be lying.

According to one source, that discipline could be as much as an additional 100 games of suspension if the league determined that Rodriguez was dishonest in his testimony.

Another 100 games? Sure why not? Why stop making s*** up on the fly now?

It is f***ing dumb. All this is about is Selig trying to measure his dick over the war on steroids. If he suspends arod for over 200 games he is going to feel like he is the big s***. I am not an Arod fan by any means and even I can tell you that this is f***ed. I hope Arod comes out of this with a well reduced sentence so Selig looks like the f*** wad he is.

Yeah pretty hard to be aganist A-Rod anymore. This is a disgusting witch hunt.
