digiblader Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Congrats to Matt Moore--he's been invited to the All-Star game, replacing Yu Darvish(DL). With his Rays surging towards 1st place (could be 2.5 back by tonight, as Boston is losing 4-1 in Seattle right now.), it's well deserved.
bzapple Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Why not Derek Holland? Oh right, WINZ.
digiblader Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 The other knuckleballer in baseball, Steven Wright, is in the game for Boston as Dempster pitched poorly. R.A. Dickey he isn't...

Plus he hasn't been THAT bad.

Plus he hasn't been THAT bad. He hasn't been getting results, but advanced metrics make the argument that regression to the mean is likely coming, but not to his ace-like self prior to the injury. It's just too bad it will be too late to really matter for the Jays in 2013

Arkadium Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Yesterday every AL East team wins Today every AL East team wins EXCEPT US I can't believe were worse than the Yankees.
BlueJayWay Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Yeah so the last two days the AL East goes 9-1. The Jays go 1-1 and lose a game on everybody. That's pretty remarkable.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 And the game we won was against Masterson Can't believe we didn't win either of the others.
digiblader Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Nobody else is gaining ground either--Tampa's hot! And so is Boston. At the rate things are going, Boston and Tampa are going to have huge leads in the East soon..

digiblader Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Forgot to mention that we're close to chasing Texas now--they've really struggled recently due to injuries to pitching and Lance Berkman. They're only a .5 game up on Tampa now.

digiblader Verified Member Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 No surprise there--but they better be prepared to pay through the nose in prospects.
bzapple Verified Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 The Red Sox are always prepared to pay for relievers it seems.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 Good news for the Jays. Sounds like a deal is going to get done for garza over the all star break though.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 It looks like Justin Smoak is here. Just hit a grand slam and is at a perfectly-acceptable .268/.367/.425 on the season (121 wRC+ entering tonight). Has a 13.0 BB%, 21.8 K%, and peripherals that suggest it's sustainable. Literally every considered him a total bust at the start of the season... and here he is. People are too impatient with young players these days. Everyone's always looking at the next wave of prospects instead of also considering that struggling young Major Leaguers can have just as much upside. Many star players these days took non-traditional paths to get where they are. ZiPS and Streamer have him finishing around .250/.345/.400 with 15 bombs. Kinda seems like he's still a 2nd division 1B. I think Eric Hosmer is herer.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 No-no watch for Lincecum. Bottom of the 8th.
Arkadium Verified Member Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 It's a lot but he'll get extra rest with the break. And he wasn't labouring. Timmy!!! Woah! Lincecum showing flashes of his old self?
Arkadium Verified Member Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 Exciting play by Pence to keep the no-no going to finish the 8th: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/index.jsp?gid=2013_07_13_sfnmlb_sdnmlb_1&mode=video&content_id=28885181&tcid=vpp_copy_28885181
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 Maybe Smoak is only a 2nd division 1B but I think he's in a position to improve on that in the next few years. Safeco is still playing pretty tough this year despite the changes so that line is a bit better than it seems. Hosmer is a legit star going forward. Right back on track to becoming the guy everyone thought he'd be. Simmer down. Even s***** players can have a hot month or two. Looking at their YTD slashlines, I don't see what's so positive. Smoak has a freaking .146 ISO. The kids problem has always seemed, to me at least, to be that he just doesn't have plus power, despite the massive frame. He has a power hitter's approach, and maybe 55 grade pop on a good day. Hence the 3.5 year BABIP of .266 Now a Hosmer "breakout", I could buy. Having seen him play a bit this year, it does kind of look like he's figured something out. Still nothing special though, at least not right now. He's maybe gone from sad bust to massively overrated young league average type 1B (Freddie Freeman's former office).
