  1. This is a fantastic trade. Sifting through Richards baseball-savant numbers, seems like he’s throwing almost exclusively fastball-changeup, both of which have ticked up in velocity this season. The Brewers do great work with having pitchers fiddle with their pitch mix and pitcher development in general, so I think we got a steal here for a relatively superfluous piece in Rowdy Tellez. Anyone got a scouting report on Bowden Francis? His upper minors numbers as a starter seem super intriguing. 7th round pick in 2017 who is improving year over year, so not exactly nothing. Tellez was on a fast track to DFA territory, so I’m kind of shocked we got two good pieces here.
  2. Yankees blew an 8-4 lead in the 9th inning with Chapman giving up a game tying home run to Jared Walsh. Angels win 11-8. Absolutely soul crushing.
  3. That isn’t even the worst part. She apparently suffered facial and head trauma, and had signs of skull fractures. Bauer may be f***ed if these allegations are true.
  4. If we're operating at the payrolls levels we were at between 2016-2018 (~$170M), there will be plenty of money to spend on pitching even if we dish out $20M to Semien and even taking into account arb raises. We have $64M committed. Add Semien's AAV and arb raises to that, and I don't think you'll even eclipse $100M before adding any free agents. It's not even that I'm advocating strictly for Semien either. We just can't expect guys like Moreno/Groshans/Martin to come up and start doing well and contributing to a World Series team. If it's a stop-gap one year deal, that's fine too. But we can't go into the season relying on those guys, and I don't think they have any bearing on any potential mid-size free agent position player deals (as referenced by the fact that they offered Semien a 4 year deal this past offseason).
  5. If this front office wants 2022-2024 to be the years where we're actively in our peak and trying for World Series as a complete team (as opposed to now where we're kind of just pseudo contenders with some obvious flaws), it's almost essential to keep a guy like Semien or sign Story/Bryant etc. Just accumulate as much talent and good players as possible and figure it out later. Injuries always happen. You can deal with your surplus later with trades. It's also a little much to be banking on any of those prospects to actively be contributing to a championship level team in their 0-3 years of service time in the majors. We've been lucky that Bo/Vlad/Bichette/Biggio/Manoah have adjusted decently well in a relatively short span, but doesn't mean the upcoming wave will.
  6. He’s playing LF tonight too.
  7. Lol, why are people rearranging our roster and trading core pieces because we acquired an injured, 32-year old Corey Dickerson who is a pending free agent? He's literally just a Panik replacement off the bench. I don't think we'll be moving on from any of our core pieces because of this deal.
  8. If Jamie did a little bit of research, he'd realize that Kevin Smith has played 3B in all levels of the minors, so him playing said position in AAA isn't exactly new information. It's a function of how the Jays view Smith in general (UT infielder). Wouldn't expect a call up is imminent because of this, but he technically could be next on the depth chart if there is an injury to Biggio/Espinal.
  9. Martin is on the 7-day IL after getting HBP in the helmet: Thankfully, he seemed mostly fine and the helmet got the brunt of the pitch, but he's probably out a couple weeks and is going through concussion protocol.
  10. lol so we basically got Dickerson and Cimber for an extra $1M. What a fleece by us.
  11. Actually reading McInvale's scouting report, looks like he has good enough stuff and throws mid-to-high 90's. Could see him being useful, but we also probably have 10 Andrew McInvale's in the system already. We also needed a guy like Adam Cimber yesterday, so overall, great trade.
  12. That's a pretty great bullpen tbh. The main issue with guys like Castro, Payamps, and Mayza is that they're pitching in situations where they shouldn't be. You get Borucki, Merryweather, and Dolis pitching in high leverage, and that'll instantly improve their production because you're not forcing high leverage on guys who weren't even in the majors before this year. Starters are going deeper into games now too as opposed to early on in the season. So we likely won't be overusing them too much.
  13. I consider myself fairly familiar with our farm system even beyond just the top guys. I browse our farm teams box score pretty much everyday. Even with that, I have zero idea who Andrew McInvale is.
  14. Yankees are likely a mediocre team, and have $90M AAV tied up for the foreseeable future between non-spider tack Gerrit Cole, an aging Stanton and Hicks who can’t really play the OF anymore, and DJ LeMahieu in the non-juiced ball era. You love to see it.
  15. They could also do what they did when they acquired Francisco Liriano in 2016 and move to a 6-man rotation. It'll allow you to manage Manoah's innings and keep on developing him as a starter if they don't want him in the pen. Would give Ryu an extra rest day (which he's usually performed much better with) Just need to sell it to Ray-Matz-Stripling.
  16. Rely? No. Hope? Definitely. Hoping he at least ends up giving us 1-2 seasons of healthy production while we're actively in the peak of our competitive cycle. Kind of like how Brandon Morrow was a key piece for the 2017 Dodgers.
  17. I'm sure we'll get there. I wouldn't be surprised if we end up splurging on a Berrios or German Marquez this summer actually. We don't need to really work the magic on the bullpen. Just need to get Borucki and Merryweather healthy. The bullpen is good, just ravaged by injuries at the moment.
  18. Rookie Ball starts today. Notable Jays names: - Rikelvin de Castro - Estiven Machado - Victor Mesia - Manuel Beltre
  19. Looking back on it, Shatkins really built a good rotation with relatively little: Ryu: Below market deal for a top of the rotation starter given his age and injury history. But I think credit needs to be given to Shatkins for their due diligence and buying into Ryu's success and relative health as a function of his new routines heading into the 2019 season. Ray: Acquired for Travis Bergen...who we got back anyways. And then resigned on a team friendly deal. Stripling: Gave up 1 decent prospect (Kendall Williams, who isn't exactly lighting the world on fire and is going to be a long-term project). Matz: Gave up Reid-Foley and Yennsy Diaz, who are as fungible relievers as one can get, replaced them with Castro and Payamps. Josh Wincowski is interesting, but I don't think they were planning on protecting him on the 40-man anyways. Ray (and maybe Matz depending on how he performs in the 2nd half) could be QO'd. Still one more cost-controlled year of Stripling. What a boss!
  20. Soroka re-injured his achilles (will be out until at least midseason 2022), and now Naylor with an ankle fracture. Tough week for Canadian baseball.
  21. Damn. Grichuk as our 7 hole hitter lol. What a crazy lineup.
  22. Minor league leaders in wRC+ (age 22 or younger in AA/AAA): https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders/minor-league?pos=all&lg=2,4,5,6,7&stats=bat&qual=y&type=1&team=&season=2021&seasonEnd=2021&org=&ind=0&splitTeam=false&players=&sort=19,1&filter=Age%7Clt%7C22 1. Gabriel Moreno (200 wRC+): Dude is lapping the field right now. Next best 21 year old is at a 138 wRC+ (Bobby Witt Jr.) 3. Samad Taylor (181 wRC+): Crazy K% and high BABIP, but still pretty insane 7. Otto Lopez (143 wRC+) 16. Austin Martin (125 wRC+) Jays have 4 of the Top 20 performers in AA/AAA for ages 22 or younger. And they all play for our AA team.
  23. Too early to call the Jake Cronenworth trade a loss for the Rays? He's on a 5.3 fWAR pace this season.
