Angel Perdomo had 5 innings of 3 hit shutout ball yesterday with 8K’s. Still needs to get his walks under control, but it’s nice to see him doing well after a rocky start to the season. I maintain he probably has a better chance at being a starter than Greene does if he can develop his change a bit more.
Partial to Pearce leading off. Finally hitting well since his rocky start.
Martin wouldn't be bad. Anyone but Pillar right now. Infact, just give him a day or 2 off and play DSJ.
Ivan Nova this season has been absolutely ridiculous: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/n/novaiv01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-
2.91 ERA, 2 complete games with 1 shutout, 0.8 BB/9. Not a ton of strikeouts, but he's making it work.
Searage has worked his magic again.
If Maile could even be a slightly below average hitter, he'd make for a more than viable backup behind Martin.
Reese McGuire seems to have backup C written all over him at this point.
It's just nice to see this front office stress so much on having good catchers and catching depth. I think the singular most important position in all of baseball. The impact that good defensive and framing catchers like Posey, Martin, Molina, Cervelli have on their pitching staff is truly invaluable, and I think often overlooked. A big reason why the Giants rotation seems to over achieve year over year is because of Posey's game calling and framing. Not to say a good framer can make a garbage pitcher look like an ace, but he can often make an average one look slightly above average, and that adds up over the course of a season.
Plouffe is probably Boston bound unless they trade for a 3B or call up Devers. Plouffe can atleast play a semi-competant third. Sandoval has been an absolute train wreck. What a terrible contract.
Reds had a really good draft on paper: Hunter Greene, Jeter Downs, Stuart Fairchild, Jake Heatherly and Cash Case.
Seattle had a solid top 2: White and Carlson.
I'd say we had a pretty well balanced draft, but it's impossible to tell. None of these opinion matters at all at this point. Pro-ball is a different beast. Most of the kids will never pan out.
So assuming we sign our Top 4 picks, where do those guys rank in our farm system?
Warmoth might be #5 for me after Vlad, Bo, Alford, and Reid-Foley. Rest are a bit of a question mark.
I like the first 4 picks. Healthy balance between safe picks that will more than likely crack the majors in some capacity (Warmoth, Danner), and higher upside but riskier picks (Pearson, Adams). Everything past that is gravy.
If Warmoth can become Zack Cozart (averaging ~2.0 WAR a season in his controllable years) I would be absolutely ecstatic.
Leblabijian has to be waiting in the wings at this point. Either that or they trade for a 2B. Howie Kendrick still seems like the perfect fit. Can play OF as well. Not sure how much he'll cost though.
Any chance we get Warmoth and Pearson under slot and then go over slot to get Danner and Adams? Front office is fairly risk averse. I would think that they wouldn't pick anyone in the upper rounds unless they were sure they could sign him.
Danner concerns me a bit. Picked UCLA because he wants to be closer to family and also has said that he would love to get the college experience. Hopefully we can sign him. One of the higher upside picks in the draft.
Just from what I've read, Warmoth seems to be the position player equivalent to Stroman. Stroman also picked #22 was the "safe pick" in the 2012 draft. Warmoth might be one of the more major league ready players in the draft similar to Stroman.
It wasn't even an indictment on the current front office vs. the old one.
I like Warmoth. Very solid defensively, but Jeren Kendall certainly has the higher upside.
