  1. Not sure this was reported anywhere, but Brandon Barriera was apparently touching 99 mph at Instructs facing live hitters for the first time since shutting down in May. https://dmfox.substack.com/p/whos-the-next-blue-jays-breakout
  2. Brandon Belt has put up 5.5 WAR and a 122 OPS+ in the same span in which Greg Bird has yet to play a major league game. I think it’s fairly obvious he’s better.
  3. AJ Pollock to the Mariners, 1 year $7M. Presumably to platoon with Kelenic and/or provide a little bit of protection in case he continues to struggle in the majors. Awful against RHP, but absolutely mashed LHP last year.
  4. Dodgers could’ve eaten his entire salary minus the league min, and yet no team thought of giving up a PTBNL or a Rk-league nothing prospect for him just to guarantee they get him. Like yeah they could get him in Free Agency technically, but the pro-Bauer argument hinges on the fact that his talent level is worth the publicity headache and league min, so why risk him courting other offers if he’s capable of giving you top of the rotation production? Doesn’t bode well.
  5. Bauer will probably end up getting signed partway through the season (unfortunately), but there’s no team that’s going to touch him right now.
  6. In 2021, he had a .819 OPS against lefties. Better than he hit RHP, albeit only 90 PA. Seems like he tweaked his approach in 2022 primarily to pull and sold out for more power as a result. The elevated home run numbers and strikeout numbers support that. His strikeout rate against lefties was a little high, but nothing outrageous leading me to believe that he was probably getting absolutely destroyed by the shift which will be gone next year. No shift + better hitters parks makes me think he can do enough against lefties to warrant time in the lineup consistently. I don’t think he’ll be great against lefties going forward, but should be better. I’m really excited to see Varsho’s offensive progression next year.
  7. Of interest, once the Giants backed out, Boras went to the Twins to renegotiate their offer on the table ($285M over 10 years), and even they were gun-shy after seeing the Giants back out despite having access to Correa’s medicals the past season. Buster Olney said last offseason that Boras wouldn’t let teams access Correas medicals until they had an offer on the table.
  8. Correa has had the absolute craziest free agency I’ve ever seen.
  9. Wow, people are really underselling Varsho’s offensive potential. He’s not really comparable to Kiermaier. First off, Varsho’s offensive baseline is higher. 106 wRC+ last year, and that is with the shift. His baseline going forward should be around 110-115 wRC+ with the shift restrictions. That’s basically Kiermaiers career high. Then you add the fact that he’s still 26, has less than 1500 PA’s in the majors, is a former top prospect, and had a .899 OPS in the minors with a 15% k-rate, and you’re looking at a potentially superstar level player if he improves offensively. Like if he just improves a little and gets to 120 wRC+ (very possible) coupled with his defense, he’s EASILY a 6-7 WAR player.
  10. Clubhouse/dugout vibe gonna be really different next year. No Teo and Gurriel.
  11. Lourdes also in the deal apparently. That’s kind of shocking.
  12. Moreno+ according to Passan. Hopefully no Tiedemann.
  13. There’s no major league team that’s going to deal with the media and public headache that comes with having Bauer on their roster. People have been blackballed for less.
  14. Friendly reminder that Drew Pomeranz signed a 4 year, $34M contract with the Padres and is basically MIA now.
  15. That’s unfortunate. He would’ve been a really nice fit for us. Michael Conforto or David Peralta might be the play now.
  16. $233M, so technically we’re over.
  17. This offseason has made paying a 36 year old George Springer $25M seem not so bad. And Gausman is an absolute bargain. He’s probably break $150M easy in this market.
  18. Cueto would be a fine 5th starter Would rather spend money on an OF/bat, but if they can swing both, that’d honestly be incredible.
  19. Judge also had offers of $400M from the Padres, so he left some money on the table to stay a Yankee.
  20. Man, we really should've locked up Bo/Vlad before this offseason. Their prices just went up dramatically. This winter is definitely an inflection point in Free Agency spending going forward.
  21. At this point, I'd be perfectly happy if they kept all 3 catchers, signed 1 of Brantley/Conforto, gave a couple relievers with David Phelps like upside minor league deals with incentives, and call it an offseason. I don't get the need to trade from catchers unless there is a real attractive left-handed bat with a similar upside out there, but I'm getting the impression that's not the case. Just rotate Kirk/Jansen between DH and C, and give Gabby the odd start behind the plate and take INF/OF reps.
  22. Actually just realized that the estimate I was looking for luxury tax payroll didn't include Kevin Kiermaier (since his contract details haven't bene released yet) So we're very likely at or over the luxury tax at this point.
  23. The only thing that makes me think they want to add to the bullpen is apparently we were a finalist for Kenley Jansen. Doesn't seem like the type of move that would prohibit us from adding an OF and SP, so it might still be in play:
