So Peyton Battenfield is debuting for the Guardians today, and he looks absolutely nasty.
Cleveland pitching development does it again. Honestly baffling how they churn out quality starting pitching year after year.
I know TINSTAAP is a real thing, but it’s really hard to look at Tiedemman body of work and pure stuff and not think he’s going to be a top of the rotation arm.
I guess going deep into games is the next developmental challenge, but even if he can give us 5 innings from a rotation spot, that’s immensely valuable.
I think AA truly learned a lot under the Dodgers and Friedman for the 2 years he worked there. Got to see how an elite organization is run.
Probably realized how importance of good player development . He was good at drafting, but our player development system was absolutely arcane under his regime.
So Jason Heyward is the latest project that the Dodgers decided to rebuild into All-Star form.
He has 2 home runs already one of which was 113 mph off the bat.
Bullpen day for them tomorrow and then they face Gerrit Cole after that. They could very conceivably be 0-6 for their opening series at home.
People forget they almost choked away a playoff spot in September before they got unbelievably hot in October. They were never as good as they seemed when it came to their World Series run. Plus, now they’re missing Hoskins and Harper too.
Super interesting. Toronto actually had the 2nd best pitching staff in the league if you look at team-wide Pitching+ (103 Pitching+, which is tied with Yankees, Astros, Dodgers, and Giants).
I don’t disagree, but projection systems will often times lowball production for unproven guys like Bradish. Rightfully so because those guys have to prove their worth and breakout first, but overall given the young talent that Baltimore has assembled, they do have more potential for positive variance.
That being said, they could also turn out like Detroit who took a step forward last year and then immediately regressed this year. We’ll just have to wait and find out.
According to ZiPS:
Bassitt (2.5 fWAR) + Belt (2.0 fWAR) + Kiermaier (2.0 fWAR) + Swanson (0.7 fWAR) = 7.2 fWAR
vs.
Teo (2.5 fWAR) + Rodon (4.6 fWAR) = 7.1 fWAR
It's actually closer than I thought. WAR-wise it's basically a wash, but I think the approach we ultimately ended up going with fills more holes, adds more versatility to our roster, and also hedges against underperformance/injuries.
ZiPS projected standings for the AL: https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-2023-start-of-spring-zips-projected-standings-american-league/
New York Yankees 89-73
Toronto Blue Jays 88-74
Tampa Bay Rays 86-76
Baltimore Orioles 80-82
Boston Red Sox 79-83
Did the same with Josh Donaldson after his MVP year.
Shapiro has been very vocal about not going to arbitration if they can help it. I believe the only arbitration cases we’ve had are Marcus Stroman and relievers like Ryan Tepera. Track record speaks for itself.
