Not sure how this (partially) got turned around to a Devon White conversation but I will always jump in when it comes to Devo. One of my all time favourite Blue Jays. Just made the amazing plays look so freakin' easy. Seemed like he had the longest stride I had ever seen. 5 steps and he was wherever he needed to be.
I would 100% be ok if the only additions to the roster are of the bullpen variety at this point. If they take training camp and the first month of the season to see which players have made big improvements in the off-season then they can more accurately judge which holes they need to fill.
Mike Trout says "Hi".
A players career with the team that drafted them is kinda like real life relationships. You stick around because you see the potential or you believe the promises and then you realize you should have moved on long ago. lol
Halladay, Steib, Bautista, Delgado
Also loved Devon White, Fernandez and Henke. Not sure where the separation should be between straight numbers and sentimental/franchise defining moments/eras.
I don't mind Espinal at 3rd OR Biggio at 2nd. I just don't want both. If I had to pick my first option it would be to leave Espinal at 3rd and upgrade 2nd base. They could still upgrade 3rd base around the deadline if Espinal/Moreno/Smith are not cutting it.
There is a big drop off in talent after starter #4. I think that's where I would spend my money to start. Ideally you move something along the lines of Biggio, Stripling and Grichuck to a team that has players they want to cut costs on those positions. The Jays would probably have to throw in some minor league talent as well.
Hope that made sense...it's still early here and I haven't had my coffee...
It's unbelievable how well signing Ray and Semien worked out for both the players and the Jays as an organization. It will be interesting to see if it leads to any good value show-me deals this offseason. The pending CBA uncertainty may hinder this. One of the more interesting off seasons in a while for sure.
Love that Semien got his payday but it kinda seems like he is giving up winning a world series with this contract. Are the Rangers likely to be able to buy themselves into playoff contention?
Amazing season by Ray! Testament to the focus and hard work he put in. Unfortunately the Cy Young award means he won't be back. If he had put in the kind of season to have him place 4th or 5th then the Jays would most likely have been able to come back with a 2-4 year deal. The win puts him in the type of contract that I doubt the head office bites on. I wish him best wherever he ends up! Unless He is in the AL East on a different team..lol.
This is how I see the Catcher position playing out for the next year and a bit for the Jays.
The Jays have 3 MLB capable catchers but the guy with by far has the highest upside isn't ready. Moreno probably won't be ready to be on a WS caliber team this year. as the starting catcher. Jansen seems to be the guy that fits best with the "win-now we know who he is" role as primary catcher this year so you keep him this year and possibly trade him next off season if Moreno looks ready. Kirk has the highest trade value out of him and McGuire so you trade Kirk this off season and keep McGuire. If Moreno looks to be a capable back-up around the trade deadline you bring him up and move McGuire. If not you just keep McGuire.
Jansen and Kirk need to be moved if they are going to be pushed out by Moreno in 2023. A lot of MLB teams will see both of them as starting Catchers or at least a 1A/1B type guy so you need to maximize their value. I am probably missing a few points...this seems to be the best way to maximize the depth of our catcher situation right now.
Regarding the SP/RP discussion goes, it will be interesting to see if there are any pitchers that Pete Walker thinks he can turn around or take to the next level.
Spanky...I like you. You are an amazing contributor to this forum. I think you have a great sense of humour and love your knowledge of baseball.
Dude...don't assume vitriol or sarcasm on every response...lol. I read that reply by FantasyNewb and thought he was giving you a compliment. You responded with anger and I was like was like "what did I miss?".
If I get fired up I keep my sh*t in draft and wait until the next day to put people on blast. Anyhoo... love your contributions to this site my man...
Yes hopefully, but you didn't answer my question...lol. It is going to be along off-season. What position do they need to be in when they decide to keep him vs look to get value back?
Is there a scenario where they look at trading Berrios if they are out of the playoff picture close to the deadline next year? Do they keep him regardless and take the pick if he signs elsewhere? (Yes I am actually asking, I expect that if they are within 5-8 games of a wildcard spot they keep him) Who else on the roster is in a similar decision making spot?
Based on team need and also to hopefully maximize the value of each contract I have to go with Ray here.
If the Jay's do not replace Marcus the offense will suffer but it also has more room to decline and still not affect total team performance as much as a lesser pitcher would if they replaced Ray.
