  1. In Passan’s new article he mentions that the Jays want to do “something big”. It was in reference to Ohtani and his potential market in free agency. Ohtani seems like a pipe dream, and doing something big in free agency in this year’s market is probably better on the pitching side. Unless that something big is Bellinger, which I wouldn’t be thrilled with but does seem far more likely than Ohtani.
  2. Teams that are shedding payroll due the RSN issues might open up the trade market a bit (MIN, MIL, etc) but yeah the Jays really can't afford to trade top prospects unless they don't care about 2026-beyond and just go all in for the next two seasons, which doesn't jive with what Shapiro would typically do. I think there will be at least one trade since the free agent pool is so bad that they can't possibly get all their needs met through there (ex. left field, third base), but otherwise it will probably be more of the same as last winter where they went for the 1 year deals for players coming off down years (KK, Belt).
  3. DeMarlo Hale is back with the Jays as a bench coach. No word on if he was at the dinner with Ohtani and Kikuchi in Toronto.
  4. I want no part of Chapman on a long term deal. If he accepts the QO (he won’t) then that’s fine but anything beyond that and I’m ok with moving on. I do agree it will be hard to find a 3-4 WAR replacement in this market, though. Might have to take a hit at 3B and compensate elsewhere.
  5. Yeah something better than O'Neill would be great but hard to see what Kikuchi's value would look like to other teams. He's coming off a good year and only makes $10m in 2024 so he's good value, but track record isn't there and he's already in his 30's. I mentioned O'Neill because the Cardinals are apparently looking to trade him and he comes with the same control as Kooch. It's a deal that fills holes for both teams, and O'Neill is good enough defensively to not compromise the run prevention component that Atkins was adamant about last winter. Gorman would be an interesting target. LHB with control and lots of red on the statcast page. Would be a fit, at least offensively.
  6. I had a similar thought, but more like Kikuchi for O'Neill and then signing a FA SP. I don't mind trading Manoah, but not for Carlson. Maybe it's Varsho PTSD but when the statcast page is excessively blue in the important offensive categories, I'm not trading any real assets for it unless it's an important position. Since Carlson wouldn't be playing CF here, I don't see the point in a trade like that, especially when the Jays would be selling low on Manoah in that scenario.
  7. If the Jays can get Suarez for a reasonable price, then that wouldn't be a bad scenario. Has 1+1 left on his deal, so it's either going to be 1/13 or 2/26, and both are reasonable for the type of player he is. Much better than overpaying for Chapman or Candy on long term deals.
  8. A 40 year old DH coming off two below average offensive seasons in a row (including a 75 wRC+ after the ASB in 2023) is not someone I'd be terribly excited about as a DH option. As strictly a bench piece that they can wrap the Canadian flag around for marketing purposes is more acceptable, but not in Belt's role from last season. Could he have a decent season in 2024? Maybe, but I wouldn't want to count on that, and the Jays kinda need offense they can count on after how 2023 turned out.
  9. Yeah, last season the Jays had Varsho and KK in the OF, so they essentially had their backup CF starting in LF. Without KK, and presumably with a better offensive player coming in to play LF full time in 2024, they will need a backup CF. Taylor as a 4th OF and platoon partner with Varsho would be a solid fit. With that said, it's Morosi, so be prepared for "Blue Jays showing interest in..." tweets all winter.
  10. Yeah if Stroman only gets a 2 year deal (doubtful) then I’d be all over that but I would think he could get more years even in his early 30’s. Atkins doubled and tripled down on run prevention last season so I can’t see him going after Teoscar or Soler types unless they are full time DH’s. Hoskins, Brantley, Turner, and JDM make more sense in that regard.
  11. Chapman gets the QO, Mitch White added to the 40 man, and the Jays acquire Brendon Little from the Cubs for cash.
  12. Yeah they kinda needed Green back in 2024-25 at the minimum with the way the competitive window is looking, so they were probably fine with the overpay just to continue to have him. If he tested free agency then he may have left.
  13. So it’s basically $11.5m with the way Schneider uses his relievers. I’m actually pretty surprised by this. I knew Green would decline his option but Atkins never spends real money on the bullpen. If he’s spending this much on a reliever, combined with $6m for Jimi, and Romano’s increase, then I think they might have a decent amount to spend this winter.
  14. Yeah I said at the trade deadline he seems like a Ross Atkins acquisition. His offensive profile is really risky so wouldn't surprise me if 2023 was the start of a decline for him but could also be a buy low candidate who can bounce back (123 wRC+ in 1641 PA from 2019-22). Plus he fits the type of offense the 2023 Jays seemed to love. Wouldn't shock me if the Jays picked him up, but I'm sure there is a team out there that would play him at SS.
  15. Yeah being compared to the Guardians in terms of farm system and it having nothing to do with pitching is not a good thing.
  16. Yeah seriously. It's hard to see how the Jays can use free agency and significantly improve on the position player side unless they blow their wad for Ohtani or Bellinger. Looking at the "dead cat bounce back" category, the only names that stand out to me are Tim Anderson, Michael Brantley, and Rhys Hoskins. Anderson stunk and Brantley/Hoskins were hurt in 2023 so maybe you can buy low and get surplus value there. Otherwise it does look like the Jays best options to fill position player spots will be internally or trade. Unless Atkins feels really secure with his job security then I don't think he goes too internal (maybe Schneider gets one spot and the rest filled externally), but who knows. I don't think anyone of us had Belt on our radars before Atkins signed him and it worked out so maybe something pops up. Thankfully the one thing Atkins does really well is big league transactions.
  17. Yeah I think it makes sense for Green to either see if the Jays pick up one of their options or test free agency. I don't think he's taking the 1/6.25m option, but who knows what his mindset is. Other than that, qualify Chapman, and let the other FA's go.
  18. I wonder if they keep Mattingly on board.
  19. I didn't say it was his fault, but those contracts were bad deals when they were signed, and now the team has financial issues that are only going to get exacerbated by the fact that the Padres have at least 2 of the top 10 worst contracts in the sport (if not more). It's one thing if the Yankees or Red Sox are making those financial mistakes, but when it's San Diego, it's hard to justify how Preller is still employed.
  20. I think the Padres would keep Tatis, both for optics and because he doesn't make big money in 2024. Soto and Kim both make sense to move. Kim has a mutual option for 2025 which he would likely decline, so I'm assuming he'll be a FA rather than arb eligible (not sure though). He's probably a good target for the Jays who need a 2B and he'll likely cost way less to extend than Bichette, so he can be a Bo replacement for 2026 onwards. Machado and Xander both have contracts that end in like 2045 so I doubt any team is touching those deals. Preller extending Machado, Cronenworth, and Darvish when he didn't have to, and then signing Xander when he had both Kim and Tatis already on the roster is absolutely a fireable offense. Not sure how he's survived, especially now with the financial issues.
  21. Agreed. The rule changes were amazing, but the actual season felt like a chore. I guess that’s clouded by being a Jays fan but even the playoffs aside from a handful of games were a bore. Oh well, on to the off season and hopefully a better 2024 season. Ohtani, Soto trade, etc. Let’s get the stove heating up.
  22. Not sure if the Padres will do a full fire sale but Soto is definitely getting traded. Just a matter of who else follows.
  23. The Rangers are a legitimately good team. The D-Backs are average at best. It looks like Arizona's luck is starting to run out.
  24. The AAV for Cronenworth isn't awful, but he's signed from age 30-36. There's almost certainly going to be some dead money in there. Although short term it might work out if he's playing 2B everyday as the Padres sunk a lot of his value by playing him at 1B last season. I guess I could see a scenario where it would make sense for the Jays to do a deal like that, especially if it allows them to keep what's left of their top prospects. But when Soto is gone after 2024 and you're stuck with 6/70 left on JC's deal, then it looks less appealing.
  25. Yeah Game 1 was great, so maybe the quality of this series hooks me back in eventually. I usually watch the World Series regardless, and I'm still paying attention to it, but the D-Backs do absolutely nothing for me. Hopefully there was more great games in the series either way.
