  1. Not a single MLB reporter knows anything about Ohtani or what he wants/likes. It's all guessing for engagement, follows, and likes. It's best to just wait for Jeff Passan's "BREAKING" post and ignore all the other stuff.
  2. Yeah an OF of Soto-Judge-Verdugo from left to right is a bad setup. They would be better off doing what was mentioned above, which is flipping Verdugo to the Padres and getting Grisham back, which would be an offensive downgrade, but much better defensive alignment.
  3. US media dunking all over Ohtani for the way he's handled free agency. Chris Russo and Stephen A on First Take went in on him for it. The Canadian media hasn't done anything except post praying emojis that he signs with the Jays. Your choice, Shohei.
  4. That’s fair. It would be disappointing while also could be a better long term scenario. With Ohtani I don’t care about the long term risk, it would just be awesome to see him as a Jay. Soto would cost assets and might be a one year rental so that comes with more long term risk/harm.
  5. If King is as good as he showed in the final 1-2 months of 2023, then that’s probably the best deal the Padres could get in terms of their goals (winning right away). Manoah is too risky, Tiedemann has thrown like 100 innings in 2 years in the minors, and Schmidt looks like lower end SP. I could see the Padres pulling the trigger if King is involved, though he comes with his own set of risk (injury risk, lack of IP, etc). Preller would be smart to wait for Ohtani to sign first, though. Could open up the Soto market and maybe get them a deal they like better.
  6. Unfortunately probably bringing Chapman back. I can’t think of any other impact FA or trade that is realistic unless they can get Robert, and Bellinger would be a bad idea. If Ohtani signs elsewhere and Soto goes to the Yankees, then the Jays should probably just do what they did last season. One year vetrins. Except this time hope that Vlad, Kirk, Springer, and Varsho actually perform well. This is not the FA market to be overpaying for someone unless it’s on the top end of the market.
  7. I still think he ends up with the Dodgers, but we shouldn't be disappointed if that ends up happening. The Jays getting this far in the process is pretty damn impressive.
  8. Roberts either knows the Dodgers are getting him or knows they are not. Or neither. Dammit Shohei just make your damn choice so we can all move on.
  9. Toronto says yes to that (or should). Not sure about the Padres. I actually think if it’s between Manoah and Schmidt, then Preller might prefer Manoah based on past performance, age, and control, but who knows.
  10. Yeah I was thinking about that earlier. I never see Woj and Shams post rumors or speculation. It’s either actual news or something newsworthy that is going on. Beyond that I can’t even name another NBA reporter because they very rarely trend. Passan is like Woj/Shams so he’s the most reliable follow but literally everyone else in MLB media is obsessed with clicks. Some of that could be just MLB in general having a slow/boring off season every year, so they have to write about something that people will actually read or click on, but it comes off incredibly cheap to me. I had to block Morosi for that reason. I don’t even want to read any of his posts because I know it’s designed for people to click on it rather than post anything significant.
  11. Rosenthal didn’t cite a source or say “per sources” unless I missed it (only skimmed the article). He just said Ohtani was believed to have met with the Jays. I guess even Ken sold his soul for that sweet clickbait engagement that Morosi lives off of. I only follow Passan and Murray as baseball guys now and that’s probably for the best.
  12. Yeah no chance he signs for that low. He’s going to want $500m, and possibly more depending on what Ohtani signs for. I doubt he’d extend with any team before testing the market.
  13. I think what helps this theory is that Soto isn’t Kawhi. Prior to the trade, Kawhi made it known he wanted to play in LA. Didn’t even hint that he’d stay in Toronto. Soto is a Boras guy who is looking to get paid. I don’t think he cares about location. Not sure there is a dollar amount that would make him forgo testing free agency (at least a reasonable one) but the Jays just have to give him the best deal and he’d stay. They won’t have to bend over and do tricks like they are likely doing to get Ohtani now.
  14. Kelenic from May-onwards last season had a 88 wRC+ in 315 PA (.356 BABIP and 33 K%). Maybe the Braves can fix him (and then sign him to an insulting extension) but taking on $30m of dead money with the hopes of fixing a player is risky. If it works then obviously it will look better.
  15. No team would take Springer’s contract and the Jays have no one to replace him, so it doesn’t seem very likely that he’s moved. Manoah in the pitch clock era combined with his attitude make him an easy sell here, so if he’s the main guy going to the Padres, then that would work for me.
  16. I think he’s a big enough name now to still generate revenue/hype but without the “Babe Ruth” aura of being a two way player, it’s difficult to say how sustainable that is. As a great RF, he becomes a bit more human rather than the unicorn he has been.
  17. I’ve said before I think the Jays will end up with Soto if they don’t get Ohtani so this doesn’t surprise me. Whether this particular report was a leak by the Padres to sucker the Yankees to offer more is also possible.
  18. Bichette seems to want to test free agency, and Vlad wants an extension but isn’t worth giving one to yet (at least not for the money/years he’d want). There’s a good chance both are gone after 2025, so there should be some flexibility there from a payroll standpoint. Ohtani making $50m a year in his 30’s wouldn’t be ideal from a team building standpoint when he’s in his declining years but if you want elite free agents (and it doesn’t get more elite than him) then you kinda have to live with the dead money in the end. With that said, if the Jays pull off the miracle and sign Ohtani, then they need to step their player development game up. They’ll need some cheap young impact players to fill up some spots that they won’t have as much payroll room to fill via free agency.
  19. Latest from Rosenthal (re: Soto)
  20. A 12-13 year deal would take Ohtani to age 40-41, so there would definitely be some dead money in there unless he defies aging on top of all the other great things he can do, but he's not Pujols or Cabrera. Aside from his ability to pitch, he's also a great athlete, plus base runner, and if he needs to take a break from pitching then he can likely transition into a plus defensive OF for a few years, so he'll be able to provide value aside from his bat (which is elite). That's not even factoring the marketing aspect and how much he changes the Jays "brand". So yeah, if the Jays actually pull off this miracle and sign him, you can certainly dread what his production could look like in 2030-35, but I don't think too many Jays fans would care about that in 2023.
  21. I’m curious to see what he ends up signing for, or even where the offers are now. If the Jays are a finalist, then they’d have to be willing to go at least $500m, as I doubt they would have gotten this far if they weren’t willing to go there, but how much beyond that are they willing to go? I would think they’d have to beat the Dodgers offer by a decent amount to get him. Would Rogers go $600m plus? Regardless hopefully we have an answer by this weekend and the off season can finally progress. Five weeks of dead silence after a historically bad World Series kinda sucks.
  22. I’d still be shocked if he signs with anyone other than the Dodgers, but the longer this drags out is probably a good thing for the Jays/Cubs.
  23. In Passan's latest article (behind a paywall so I'm trusting Twitter/X to be accurate here) he confirms that the Dodgers, Jays, Cubs, and Angels are the teams still in the running for Ohtani, while the Rangers, Red Sox, and Mets are turning their attention to other players.
  24. It will sting more than it should mainly because Passan and Rosenthal confirmed that the Jays were dark horses in this, so it brought credibility to the idea that it could happen. Everything since then is just social media BS with trolls pretending they have sources and all that nonsense.
