  1. Yeah if Stroman only gets a 2 year deal (doubtful) then I’d be all over that but I would think he could get more years even in his early 30’s. Atkins doubled and tripled down on run prevention last season so I can’t see him going after Teoscar or Soler types unless they are full time DH’s. Hoskins, Brantley, Turner, and JDM make more sense in that regard.
  2. Chapman gets the QO, Mitch White added to the 40 man, and the Jays acquire Brendon Little from the Cubs for cash.
  3. Yeah they kinda needed Green back in 2024-25 at the minimum with the way the competitive window is looking, so they were probably fine with the overpay just to continue to have him. If he tested free agency then he may have left.
  4. So it’s basically $11.5m with the way Schneider uses his relievers. I’m actually pretty surprised by this. I knew Green would decline his option but Atkins never spends real money on the bullpen. If he’s spending this much on a reliever, combined with $6m for Jimi, and Romano’s increase, then I think they might have a decent amount to spend this winter.
  5. Yeah I said at the trade deadline he seems like a Ross Atkins acquisition. His offensive profile is really risky so wouldn't surprise me if 2023 was the start of a decline for him but could also be a buy low candidate who can bounce back (123 wRC+ in 1641 PA from 2019-22). Plus he fits the type of offense the 2023 Jays seemed to love. Wouldn't shock me if the Jays picked him up, but I'm sure there is a team out there that would play him at SS.
  6. Yeah being compared to the Guardians in terms of farm system and it having nothing to do with pitching is not a good thing.
  7. Yeah seriously. It's hard to see how the Jays can use free agency and significantly improve on the position player side unless they blow their wad for Ohtani or Bellinger. Looking at the "dead cat bounce back" category, the only names that stand out to me are Tim Anderson, Michael Brantley, and Rhys Hoskins. Anderson stunk and Brantley/Hoskins were hurt in 2023 so maybe you can buy low and get surplus value there. Otherwise it does look like the Jays best options to fill position player spots will be internally or trade. Unless Atkins feels really secure with his job security then I don't think he goes too internal (maybe Schneider gets one spot and the rest filled externally), but who knows. I don't think anyone of us had Belt on our radars before Atkins signed him and it worked out so maybe something pops up. Thankfully the one thing Atkins does really well is big league transactions.
  8. Yeah I think it makes sense for Green to either see if the Jays pick up one of their options or test free agency. I don't think he's taking the 1/6.25m option, but who knows what his mindset is. Other than that, qualify Chapman, and let the other FA's go.
  9. I wonder if they keep Mattingly on board.
  10. I didn't say it was his fault, but those contracts were bad deals when they were signed, and now the team has financial issues that are only going to get exacerbated by the fact that the Padres have at least 2 of the top 10 worst contracts in the sport (if not more). It's one thing if the Yankees or Red Sox are making those financial mistakes, but when it's San Diego, it's hard to justify how Preller is still employed.
  11. I think the Padres would keep Tatis, both for optics and because he doesn't make big money in 2024. Soto and Kim both make sense to move. Kim has a mutual option for 2025 which he would likely decline, so I'm assuming he'll be a FA rather than arb eligible (not sure though). He's probably a good target for the Jays who need a 2B and he'll likely cost way less to extend than Bichette, so he can be a Bo replacement for 2026 onwards. Machado and Xander both have contracts that end in like 2045 so I doubt any team is touching those deals. Preller extending Machado, Cronenworth, and Darvish when he didn't have to, and then signing Xander when he had both Kim and Tatis already on the roster is absolutely a fireable offense. Not sure how he's survived, especially now with the financial issues.
  12. Agreed. The rule changes were amazing, but the actual season felt like a chore. I guess that’s clouded by being a Jays fan but even the playoffs aside from a handful of games were a bore. Oh well, on to the off season and hopefully a better 2024 season. Ohtani, Soto trade, etc. Let’s get the stove heating up.
  13. Not sure if the Padres will do a full fire sale but Soto is definitely getting traded. Just a matter of who else follows.
  14. The Rangers are a legitimately good team. The D-Backs are average at best. It looks like Arizona's luck is starting to run out.
  15. The AAV for Cronenworth isn't awful, but he's signed from age 30-36. There's almost certainly going to be some dead money in there. Although short term it might work out if he's playing 2B everyday as the Padres sunk a lot of his value by playing him at 1B last season. I guess I could see a scenario where it would make sense for the Jays to do a deal like that, especially if it allows them to keep what's left of their top prospects. But when Soto is gone after 2024 and you're stuck with 6/70 left on JC's deal, then it looks less appealing.
  16. Yeah Game 1 was great, so maybe the quality of this series hooks me back in eventually. I usually watch the World Series regardless, and I'm still paying attention to it, but the D-Backs do absolutely nothing for me. Hopefully there was more great games in the series either way.
  17. Yeah previously Manfred mentioned expanding the playoffs even further (after expansion) and dropping the number of regular season games. I'm sure the MLBPA wouldn't like that unless they were promised a bigger piece of the playoff revenue, but I think dropping from 162 is probably going to happen at some point. A long regular season made sense when the playoffs had fewer teams, but now with 12 teams making it (and owners eventually wanting 14), a full 162 just doesn't have the same value.
  18. I think the Phillies missing out really hurt in terms of national interest. Pat McAfee who seems like someone who'd rather get punched in the face than talk about baseball had Bryce Harper on his show during the playoffs. That was the one team left that might have interested a national audience. Beyond that, this matchup just isn't sexy at all, and it doesn't help that they started the series on a Friday night instead of Tuesday like they used to. I think if they have more games like Game 1, then maybe the later games in the series will do better, but I can't be the only one who is waiting for this series to end so the off-season can start. Maybe that's just the impatient Blue Jays fan in me.
  19. Yeah that's the issue with trading Vlad. He's going to be a $20m/AAV 1B who has been a 0.0-2.8 WAR player in the four non-2021 seasons he's played in the bigs. A team can sign Rhys Hoskins for nothing and probably get 25-30 HR and a 1-2 WAR. The team acquiring Vlad would have to view him as a superstar rather than what he's been for most of his career, and there are too many nerds in front offices for that to happen at this point. The best chance to trade him for good value is probably AJ Preller, but it's hard to see what a deal would look like that makes sense for both sides. Definitely won't be Tatis.
  20. I've said before the Jays may have lucked out not acquiring anyone at the deadline since Davis Schneider did more than probably any deadline pickup would have, but Pham was such a no brainer for this team. Cost nothing to get him, and he was a RH OF bat with some pop, which is exactly what the Jays needed.
  21. Since 2020, the Jays have the 6th best regular season record in baseball (304-242), 2 games behind the Yankees. I tend to agree that while we may think Atkins' job is in danger, from a business aspect he's probably done more than enough to keep his bosses happy. The only thing he hasn't done is had playoff success, but a lot of that is out of his control, and Shapiro is likely firmly in the "playoffs at a crapshoot" camp so he may focus more on the regular season success. I think the only way Atkins is gone after 2024 is if the team falls out of contention. If they are in contention and/or make the playoffs, then he's likely fine even if they go 0-2 in the WC round again. In 2021-22, he built a top 5 offense in baseball, and in 2023 built the best (or close to it) pitching staff in baseball. He's gotta find a way to make that happen in the same season.
  22. Tiedemann is such a risky prospect but the upside is so high. If the Jays had any success at developing starters then I'd probably be OK with trading him knowing that they'd just develop others who might be more durable, but he's like the only prospect aside from Manoah in the last 8 years who looks like he could crack a big league rotation so it's hard to move someone like that. Curious to see what (a presumably desperate) Atkins does.
  23. Taking Cronenworth with 7/78 left on his deal at ages 30-36 just for one expensive season of Juan Soto seems like a really bad idea for whoever does it. Brian Cashman would probably do it though.
  24. After watching KK and Varsho in the same outfield for a season, I really hope they no interest in acquiring Carlson, much less selling low on Manoah to get him. Overpaying for Soler would a more logical decision than that. At least he would fill a need. Could definitely see Atkins trading for O’Neill, though.
  25. This trade is definitely worse than prime John Olerud and $6 million cash for Robert Person.
