  1. The head lawyer in the O.J. defense, Robert Shapiro, was always referred to as Sha-pee-row. That's what cemented that pronounciation for me.
  2. One possibility (among many) might be that AA wanted/expected a bump in payroll and wanted to spend a lot. He did mention Price in his end of season presser. Maybe that was one point of contention between him and Shapiro or between him and Rogers. In hindsight, it's really weird that he said some of the things he said given that he wasn't committed to staying.
  3. This is far from stupid. The AA model wasn't going to work with corporate ownership. He's show that he can't manage payroll effectively. He couldn't win with less payroll. He couldn't win with his first payroll bump. He had to have a do-over to finally show that he can win WITH money and he still had to burn some prospect capital to get him over the hump. Shapiro is a better fit for Rogers. They want someone that knows how to manage payroll effectively. You could equate that with being cheap but maintaining the same payroll AA had given that the currency of its revenue (CDN dollar) is shrinking vis-à-vis the currency of the payroll (US dollar) is hardly being cheap. It's more than reasonable. They just want it managed better and who can blame them.
  4. What has Rogers said that contradicts what you're saying? If you want to take AA's side that's fine but someone could look at all that and still think he should have signed. In any case, whatever, it's no big loss.
  5. I think his point is that just because something isn't a certainty, doesn't mean it isn't a reasonable assumption. Pillar being worth more to the Jays isn't a certainty but as NJH argued, it's probably a fair assumption.
  6. Not to mention that the suppressed K totals were going to make Hoffmann lose value in the short term. It was a good time to sell.
  7. Seems like an interesting young man to me but one who doesn't seem to understand the extent of his privilege. It's pretty easy for a guy in his situation to live the life of a part time vagabond and I don't sense as much awareness of that fact as I would like to (though no less that what I expect from the average person his age).
  8. This seems pretty unfair. You're implying that Gibby's doesn't enforce any kind of standard. This has been shown to not be the case. He does expect a certain standard of respect and will enforce it (see Pillar). Just because he's a nice guy doesn't mean he's total slacker. The best teachers aren't necessarily hated either. That's a false dichotomy.
  9. Not really a contest.
  10. Let's be clear about what Shapiro said. He said free agency is a bad way to build a team. Not some blanket statement that free agency is bad. I mean really all he's saying is a fairly obvious truth here. It's really hard to be build through free agency. Teams that try to just buy a winner overnight usually fall on their face. That's not the situation the Jays are in. There's no reason to think he wouldn't supplement the team with more free agents. He even specifically said he was in favor of using free agency that way. What will inhibit Shapiro in his spending won't be a line in the sand aversion, it will be the commitments in future payroll already made by AA.
  11. I find the clearly fictional movie version more honest in a sense than the so called non fiction book. I enjoy the movie a lot. I think the greater creative liberties makes it easier to focus on the emotional truth it's trying to convey whereas the book was less honest about the extend to which it was bending reality into convenient "reads like a novel" narratives. The movie dispenses with reality altogether and that seems to me like a more honest form of entertainment. It's just really just a movie, one that's more about the power of new ideas in general than about baseball specifically.
  12. More mature than the vast majority of posters IMO.
  13. I was just thinking about this last night. Thanks for saving me the trouble of digging it out.
  14. I feel fairly confident than none of those will happen. Was nice knowing you.
  15. This is basically Bob McCown's take and though I disagree with a lot of his opinions, he seems to have really done his homework this time. There's a lot of stuff Bobcat doesn't get but he understands business operations better than just about any other journalist. This is one case where I find him very credible.
  16. You never really know with that stuff. Edwin was extended when he was only a half season from FA. Not saying I expect Donaldson to do the same but I don't think you act on the assumption that there's a definite window. That seems like a recipe for doing something rash.
  17. Great news for Daniel Norris. Now if he could start making me look smart with his on field performance, that would be awesome. 18. Somewhat hilariously I might add. I'm guessing it was Hurl. Then again, I always guess Hurl and I'm usually wrong.
  19. Have to admit I don't recall the Reynolds part of the story at all.
  20. Yeah I would have been fine with keeping him but I wouldn't have given him free reign over his team president which is apparently what he wanted. The org looks bad but I don't really see that they did anything wrong. AA's decision seems pretty rash.
  21. Yes. Casual Jays fans are going to rage over Pillar but it's the fault of that stupid change.
  22. Six consecutive 25 million dollar years, age 34 through 38? For a player who isn't even on the open market? No way in hell I do that.
  23. There's a video where Westhead explains himself accompanying that article. He adds some nuance to what he said on Twitter.
  24. Yeah if this was the sticking point than AA was the architect of his own demise by giving Gibby a contract that would force the org to have this discussion every December.
