Well you're right that the Bourn and Swisher signing f***ed them. When you have payroll limitations, you can't afford to whiff on your big signings. The question worth asking though is to what extent was the outcome predictable at the time of the move.

EE and Jose are 10/5 guys. Trying to trade them with one year remaining on the deals doesn't seem like a very productice avenue.

I'm not aware of that. I know Butterfield has talked about not really wanting to be a manager. I don't know if LaCava doesn't want to be GM but he clearly has never felt like he HAD to be GM. That much is obvious from how long he's been around.

Ah o.k. I really don't know much about Basketball scouting but I can see how wingspan would be a big deal. Hopefully having a D League Team will allow him to develop. Coming from baseball, it's weird to wrap my head around how a basketball team goes about developing a player without the whole infrastructure they have in baseball.

Brunt mentionned that Lacava has experience working with Shapiro. Optics wise that's probably the best move for Shapiro and the Jays. Lacava was actually in the org before AA, I doubt he would have any qualms about leaping over him.

He pinned pretty hard for Butterfield as a Cito replacement back in the day. He roots for the internal candidates. He really should take a more reporterly attitude to these things. It's not like he has influence.

Yeah o.k. I suspected that might be the answer. The NBA draft has no depth so going with a project with upside is no big deal. It's not necessarily all that different from taking a flyer on a guy like Buelens (though it attracts way more scrutiny). I guess my next question would be... What makes Caboclo interesting? I could understand taking some giant and trying to turn him into a centre but Caboclo is s 6'9"? What makes him projectable?

Although I do think there are legitimate concerns with Gibbons, I do agree with this approach. I think it would be good for the players to keep the same guy (unless he's unpopular with them in which case it won't make a difference to them). -

I thought that was interesting from Wilner: I can also confirm that Anthopoulos is not leaving for another job with more money and/or power. All GM jobs are filled.

If AA knew he was doing this, it makes that press conference of his just seem surreal in hindsight. Was he just trying to set up unrealistic expectations for the new guy by saying the team would go after Price? What about all that talk about character guys, good team players and all that? That rings pretty hollow right now.

How reliable is Westhead? This sounds made up. I mean "good chance" could just be code for "pure speculation" -
I wonder if this played into the Price deal. Maybe AA thought he might leave and figured "better go for it while I still can." I still like the trade anyways but maybe AA plays it safer if he's not emboldened by the possibility of leaving.
