    It's obviously early but the Jays tend to stick guys at one position and let them play there more than most teams. They obviously have their OF/INF UT guys but they usually make their corner OFs pick one spot and the same can be said for fringe infielders. So if we were going to glean anything from the first two spring games: Barger getting his lone start at 3B could be a tell that they plan on mixing him in there as much as they do the outfield. Orelvis has yet to play 3B but has played 2B and DH'd and I've seen some local writers speculate that he could see a lot of time DHing. Loperfido started his lone game in CF. Does he have the leg up on CF while Varsho is out? Lukes played RF. Is he not under consideration to be the Varsho replacement in CF? Roden has played LF and RF. In the past the Jays seemed to stick with one corner. I wonder if Barger's disastrous debut in LF after only playing RF changed their thinking on that a little. McAdoo has played both games at 3B. He's behind in the timeline but he's a lot more interesting if he can stick at 3B.

    It's going to be interesting to see what the heck they do with all of these Buffalo Boys, especially since they all have options. They have a shitload of these guys. Even the ones who seem glossed over like Lukes look like decent bench players. I'd love to see a trade for more pitching depth.

    I don't know I haven't thought that far out yet. That might work though with Wagner at DH. But I'd also like to see Martinez in there some at DH/3B. I'm all for manipulating service time as well unless we think one of these guys can win ROY.

    I've seen enough. Alan Roden is our Opening Day leftfielder.

    That's an interesting development. If he can sustain that he will have raised his ceiling quite a bit.

    Aside from the money, I think a lot of this is him simply raising his profile. He just likes being a star and likes the attention. Getting to go through free agency Aaron Judge/Juan Soto style is going to give him headlines all season and then he'll be one of the biggest names in all of sports this offseason. Normally a guy like that might shy away from TO but I think having him here it will actually help. Dominicans don't exactly light the world on fire in the US with endorsements. I bet Vlad can get more of that in Canada as a homegrown star than he can anywhere else.

    Not only that, but he needs to: Buck the trend on on right-handed bats not getting big deals, especially 1B Get another team other than the Jays to go bonkers for him and there might not be a fit for him among the high spending teams In addition, the market is looking suspect. No one else got an explosion in cash after Soto signed, it was just him. Plus, all these TV deals are up in the air and ESPN is no longer forking over $550 million a year.

    You're right in that ideally you'd want this guy to play the field. That's why Gimenez was kind of an awkward acquisition since 2B is his natural fit. But there will be plenty of ABs to go around for Wagner. He can play DH, 2B, and 1B. Roster Resource guys swear he is going to mix in at 3B. Not sure I buy that but he could. He can mostly DH but if you want to rotate guys into the DH spot you could put Wagner at 2B and Gimenez slides over to SS and Bo can DH. Or you can play Wagner at 1B and Vlad can DH. Or you can just sit Wagner against lefties and use Orelvis to DH.

    They both are to blame. Vlad says he wants to be here but seemingly rejects pretty good offers. The 140 mil one after 2021 we know about. Then most recently Passan says he rejected a ton of money this offseason. He's certainly no Jose Ramirez. On the other hand, the Jays FO could have just forced the issue and made Vlad an offer he couldn't refuse. But they didn't and stuck closer to their valuations.

    The Twins were running a lot of platoons that year. I think they had several lefties coming up when Kikuchi came in and the Twins burned their pinch hitters as a result. They did tag us for a couple of early runs, but we had a great bullpen that year and all of our RH relievers mowed them down the rest of the game. I think this was part of the equation with bringing Kikuchi in. But because we couldn't score it didn't matter.

    Trying to look under the hood to see why Yarbrough was so much better with the Jays than the Dodgers to see if his improvement is sustainable at all. With the Dodgers he was: vs RHB: Truly a kitchen sink guy throwing his Changeup-Sinker-Curveball-Cutter-4 Seamer vs LHB: Sinker-4Seamer-Curveball With the Jays he: vs RHB: quit throwing his cutter vs LHB: he cut back on the sinker a lot here and threw the 4 seamer a lot more Idk if this changes anything for him or not but his peripherals were markedly better for us. Maybe he can stick.

    Vlad is going to re-sign for the Alonso contract at this rate

    It does seem like the team wants him back but it also seems like he might be a little unrealistic in what he wants. This is probably the right approach though it is risky and we will see how it plays out. My hope is that his market never materializes and he's back on a deal similar to what Devers got.

    It's tough to level this much criticism at the team when we don't know what the offers are. My read is that Vlad is giving very little discount and has done so the entire time, something that Ken is completely ignoring. In hindsight, the team should have just blown the doors off and given him the Devers deal after his 1-WAR season but that would have been insane at the time. But that's kind of what it seems like it would take to get Vlad to sign an extension. Something gargantuan that he might not even get in FA is the only way to get him to extend.

    In 1999, Rafael Palmeiro won a gold glove while playing 28 games at 1B. He DH'd 128 times that season.

    Fangraphs' "Jay of Reckoning" Article I posted earlier ran through the various contenders to sign him and it is kind of hard to see a team outbidding us if we want him. Perhaps the Yankees or a team he didn't discuss (the Rangers?) could make a massive offer. But a lot of the big spending teams just don't need a 1B. If we want him back we probably still can re-sign him by outbidding everyone (and he might not be getting the offers he wants) so long as the relationship remains intact during this final season.

    Yeah I would probably go Wagner, Vlad, Santander, Bo, Springer to start the year. Against lefties maybe they could move Springer to leadoff and move Wagner down.

    This could make sense. And if Vlad has any warm feelings for this org at all, we might finally come out on top in a big FA bidding war.

    True but their path would most resemble the Jays resigning Vlad (like they did with Devers) and making mid tier FA signings. They never went full rebuild.

    I get where the criticisms of Vlad are coming from, but if we had a chance to sign a 5 WAR player entering his age 27 season, people would be going insane with happiness on this board. But because it’s Vlad there’s a lot of trepidation for some reason.
