Yeah idk. We are hearing Alonso and Scherzer rumors. Not sure how true those are but Gray's 25 million could be a fit along those same lines but we would probably have to kiss Alonso goodbye?
One guy worth keeping an eye on in the bullpen is Tommy Nance.
He had a Stuff+ of 134 last year which was 14th in all of baseball. His Location+ was 98.
For comparison's sake, Jason Adam who has been great had a Stuff+ of 129 and Location+ of 98 last year.
I guess Nance's problem is that his fastball sucks? Might be one of the worst in baseball but his Cutter might be one of the best pitches in baseball too?
They have a ton of guys we would be interested in.
Not sure they want to move the cheaper guys but Sonny Gray, Helsley, Arenado (he won't waive his no trade clause to come here because he's an avowed xenophobe), etc. could all be had.
Sonny Gray would be a great target.
The problem is he can probably sign a 1 year deal with some s***** team and have a free and clear path to 3B ABs. If he signs here he's probably in a platoon with Clement to start the year.
I think it's a few things which are understandable.
People just don't trust Clement because he's a weird player, no pedigree, etc. He's also mostly been a part-time player and sometimes those guys get exposed when they play full-time (Fangraphs wrote about this recently).
As for Moncada, he does have pedigree and used to be good. I think fans wave away injuries too easily and bc other than Bregman he's the only guy on the FA market that is an option so people are probably more optimistic with him than they should be. Plus, he should be cheap.
Regardless, I wouldn't hate signing him as it could add some depth to the position and could even lead to a Clement/Moncada platoon. But it would need to be on a dirt cheap contract. He's not worth much more than that. I also don't mind rolling with Ernie and Barger and others can mix in too.
Well what options are you thinking then?
Also, this is only for the offensive side of things. They could make a big move on the pitching side by signing Flaherty to a big contract or something.
If we whiff on Alonso and don't get Robert or Bregman, where should we turn?
I've heard Austin Hays mentioned who could be an interesting bounce back candidate.
There's also Verdugo who I personally can't stand but he's a lefty bat and he actually plays good defense.
Grichuk could be a decent platoon guy.
JD Martinez could be a good power bat but would clog up the DH spot.
Am I missing anyone? There's possible trades to be had too or we could even go internally with Buffalo Boys.
I don't know how many of these rumor peddlers are members of the BBWAA but they should start stripping people of their memberships who engage in all this clickbait BS. The integrity of baseball journalism is in the toilet.
Lots of cheapskate owners out there.
The Cubs owner gave an embarrassing interview recently where he said they try to break even every year.
Meanwhile, he bought the team for $850 million 15 years ago and it's now worth $4.1 billion. They have also heavily invested in real estate in Wrigleyville and are making bank off of that.
It would not kill him to operate the team at a small loss every year.
I'm not too worried about the Rays but you're right in that Atkins definitely gets into showdowns with Free Agents which allows other teams to jump in.
Sometimes it leads to good deals for the team (Santander) and other times it lets other teams swoop in (Burnes).
Hopefully the Polar Bear doesn't find a team willing to pony up for him and he signs with us on a team friendly deal.
Boras tried to get the Mets to up their offer yesterday and they won't do it.
Now Boras is trying to get the Angels involved to compete with the Jays.
Alonso is a Florida guy from Tampa so the Angels don't scare me too much.
The Padres are a mess. They have zero depth, no money and could really use some of our Buffalo Boy types.
I wonder if we could work something out where we take on Arraez (probably negative trade value tbh) and get Yuki Matsui or Adrian Morejon and a prospect for a couple of Buffalo Boys.
I guess we kind of have an Arraez type already though in Will Wagner. Maybe just trade a Buffalo Boy straight up for Matsui or Morejon.
Yeah it seems like a lot of them will be getting around that.
If we are patient, we might be able to get a good deal on a Florida based guy right before pitchers and catchers report.
Instead of missing Spring Training to haggle over another million they may not get anyway they could just sign with us and drive over to Dunedin to get ready for the season in the nicest Spring Training facilities in MLB.
Yeah there are tons of them.
These are just some of the lefites: Chafin, Jalen Beeks, Tim Hill, Coulombe, Scott Alexander, etc. They all project for an ERA under 4.
There's even more righties out there, obviously.
Shi is full of s***.
This is Atkins playing 4-D chess by feeding his local reporters the BS that the Jays aren't interested in order to help stifle Boras' misinformation. The Mets brass will read Shi's tweet and think Alonso isn't going anywhere.
The Mets are going to be shocked when Passan tweets out "Alonso to the Jays." Cohen will probably fire someone.
