  1. How can everyone immediately write this off without knowing any of the particulars?
  2. And it's official, Cano to the M's. 10 years, 240 mil. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/12/mariners-to-sign-robinson-cano.html
  3. I hate to rehash the event of last year but there are a whole host of reasons why the FA route may not have been possible if ownership was pushing for one huge offseason. FA market is slower to develop, FA's don't like signing with losers and often use losers to drive up the price, the whole Canada thing, etc. It all adds up.
  4. On the whole, I like what we've done at C. Replaced JPA and Thole with Navarro and Kratz without really moving the needle budget wise. Should make for a nifty little improvement, even if a lot of that improvement is in the form of addition by subtraction.
  5. Doesn't have to be Kratz. Navarro could catch Dickey as well.
  6. Given that AA had Thole in AAA to begin last season and that Thole did nothing after being brought up, I bet there's a very good chance Kratz is the backup and Thole is in AAA.
  7. Ok got ya. I should have figured.
  8. That's a pretty big statement. Wouldn't Yadier and whatever backup you give him be a better tandem? Or Lucroy? Probably plenty more.
  9. I would consider betting against it if for no other reason than young pitchers more often than not seem to not pan out.
  10. Don't you dare steal my Martin Maldonado suggestion!
  11. Great point. But are we just assuming that a C who can catch and throw is also good at handling a pitching staff, giving pitcher's confidence, etc.? I'm not comfortable doing that. My point is that it was near universal approval that a 3 year deal for Ruiz was a tits contract to hand out whereas one for Salty wouldn't be a good idea. And this is despite the fact that Salty is generally healthier and much younger.
  12. I'd like Suzuki as a backup but he just isn't able to produce at the level he did 4-5 years ago. If he ended up as our C I'd be pretty disappointed unless he was brought in on the cheap to afford significant upgrades elsewhere.
  13. But does it really matter where you get your value from? Say you have the choice between the following: Catcher A: 3 oWAR, 0 dWAR Catcher B: 1.5 oWAR, 1.5 dWAR Why would Catcher B be more desirable?
  14. It's a very good point you are making. I think Salty at his age is a better bet on a 3 year deal than Ruiz.
  15. He's got his warts but at his age and at that price I would definitely do that.
  16. MAybe not quite 10 but close. He was very young when he started trolling.lol It's amazing the level of dedication he had.
  17. It's rare but you'll see it most often when a player's WAR is inflated by defensive metrics.
  18. Well for starters it's a really easy and quick baseline to use. So you use it when it fits your argument and you discredit it when it doesn't. But most of the time on a sabremetric-friendly board you will see people use and promote that stat.
  19. His bat isn't good enough for DH. Yes, he has power, but his ability to take walks is atrocious. Backup C is more feasible but he's kind of fickle so I'm not sure how he would respond to that. It would be best for him to be a backup C on another team.
  20. So does this make us all Angels fans? Because for Trout to win the MVP the Angels will have to start winning.
  21. Well I was going off of this running article which had him in the Top 10: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=21855. I also read something on fangraphs very recently which suggested something similar.
  22. Provided his medical records check out, I'd love to see Hanigan as our C. Viewed through a sabremetric lense, there is a lot to like about him. Supposedly a top notch pitch framer as well.
  23. I'd like to see a trade for Martin Maldonado of Milwaukee. Good defensively, excellent pitch framer, relatively young, and inexpensive.
  24. Well I didn't say I like it but if Lind is no longer with the team and they want to play Gose in LF they could slide Melky to DH.
