  1. It's a double-edged sword. If Biagini is in AAA stretching out, and that's still an if, we have the 5 in MLB and then Biagini and Bolsinger as the #6 and #7. That's a great 1-5 and an ok 6-7 but we've got jack s*** after that. You trade one and we have even less. There also is hardly anything in FA so it'd be even harder to replace a traded SP. But on the flip side you could probably get a shitload in a trade for JA Happ right now. The market for pitchers is historically bleak. Happ at 2 years 26 million is BY FAR anything better that you could get on the FA market. Shatkins might be able to get a serious overpay for someone like him.
  2. If we wanted to save even more money we could platoon him with Pompey. Pompey's minor league splits suggest that he's better while batting left-handed.
  3. What does everyone think of Upton? Is he even worth considering in a platoon? Is he even a valid 4th OF?
  4. Yeah that would be a no-brainer. I wonder if Holliday is available for 1/12 though. When all is said and done Holliday and Bautista's contracts may end up closer than we think. But like you said, getting that pick is a nice bonus to take Holliday over Bautista.
  5. You've sold me on Holliday. How much better is he than simply resigning Bautista though? I guess it all depends on cost and the potential to get a draft pick from losing Bautista.
  6. I wonder if there is any chance that Bautista would take the QO.
  7. I agree with what you are saying but the Cubs probably would have still done the deal they just would have paid him more and would be on the line for more guaranteed money IMO. Giving him player options shaves a few million of you would have to assume. If he would have had two good years and then opted out and then he sucked it would have worked out fantastic for them.
  8. Player options make sense in certain circumstances. Yes, Jason Heyward's looks terrible right now but if the Cubs could have gotten him without the player option they would have just done it anyway.
  9. That's extremely friendly to a 36 year old player. I'd be for it but it'd have to be a low AAV.
  10. So many bats on the market. He's another one worth taking a look at.
  11. Yeah I am 100% for stretching Biagini out. Him and Bolsinger as the #6 and #7 to go along with the great 5 is a good start to having depth. We were so lucky this year to not have any pitching injuries. That will be hard to replicate next season.
  12. On the flip side there are a ton of decent relievers out there this year. If we waited out the market I bet we could find a good deal on several RPs.
  13. That contract is probably about right but unless prices for relievers goes up more than I think this year I'd probably pass.
  14. I say put the banner up.
  15. Joey Votto's AAV isn't that bad actually but holy s*** does his contract run long. I'd be really nervous taking that deal on.
  16. Greg Holland is coming back from TJ and is a FA. Might be worth a flyer.
  17. I hear ya. But Sanchez's stuff looks pretty legit. He doesn't have a track record because he's really young. I think he's a good bet to be pretty good the next 4 years. Injuries with pitchers are always a concern though so I agree with you on that. Calhoun has a track record but we'll see how he ages. His bat is good but it's not special, his value is largely tied up in his defense. Turning 30 next year. I also think the market has plenty of starting caliber corner OF players. The pitching market is junk. Further makes Sanchez more valuable IMO. And of course Sanchez is a lot younger which could allow us the ability to lock him up for a lot longer than we would have Calhoun. Not sure how much that is worth though.
  18. So why exactly would you move Sanchez for him though? You just don't see Sanchez keeping this up?
  19. Man just looking at the FA list again and it's actually got a lot of options where we have needs (corner OF, DH, RP) but it's dog s*** where we have strengths (3B, SS, 2B, SP).
  20. Thanks. He makes some pretty good points. Trading Martin (old and bad contract) and Estrada (old and one year left) wouldn't be a bad idea. Happ and Tulo could be shopped as well. This team is old and there isn't a ton in the pipeline. We definitely need to try and get younger. Just throwing this out there but dealing old guys like Martin and Estrada and then signing younger replacements who may not be as good but are cheaper or will have similar AAV (a good pitch framer like Jason Castro and perhaps Ivan Nova) might make some sense. I'm not really sure locking up Donaldson to a big fat contract while they punt and rebuild on his final two prime years is very smart though. I'd prefer they just retool.
  21. You'll have to tell me which one he's written thousands.
  22. I agree with you. Just leave Osuna as the CL and then use one of those two as the fireman. Come playoff time just pitch them almost every single game. RP get hurt a lot less often too, don't they? Could be a better investment from an injury risk standpoint.
  23. Never mind the outstanding career he's had here he had a bad two months to start the season.
  24. If the Jays wanted to build an elite bullpen this is the year to do it with several of the top relief pitchers on the market. Would anyone here consider signing a Chapman or Jansen? How much would it even cost to do that?
  25. I'd love to have him back.
