  1. I was crapping on AA in that moment but I haven't been that harsh on him. I used to hate on the Rays fanboys of the board and defended AA all the time. He ran the team like a crazed poker player and made some huge moves, some worked out and fewer didn't. He skipped town before he had to deal with the consequences of his tenure so it was would have been interesting to see how it all played out in the end. I heard some personal things about him that were kind of s***** but on paper he was probably an average to above average GM?
  2. Pretty sure you're joking but I don't hate AA nearly as much as others do here but this move was not a good one. I suppose he saved us 100 mil on Vernon Wells or whatever it was so there's that. AA was a mixed bag is what I'm saying.
  3. Yeah he's cooked and today confirms it. Shatkins aren't idiots, they weren't going to get anything out of Tulo and rather than keep him on the 40 man just praying for a dead cat bounce they instead cut him loose. I know we had some potential Rule 5 guys out there, this could help us protect one of them. What a f***ing albatross his contract was though. Paying him 58 million from 2018 on and he won't suit up for a single game. He was a 0 WAR player in 2017 too so we paid him another 20 mil that year which brings the total to $78,000,000 for 4 years of 0 WAR. Thanks AA.
  4. Not sure how they'll pay it out but this year is probably the worst year of the next 3 "rebuilding" years. So if we could put the majority of the 38 mil on this year it would be helpful.
  5. Yeesh, what a horrible situation. So much dead money. Atkins must REALLY think he's cooked. Otherwise it would have made more sense to bring him back as a backup IF to see if we could get a dead cat bounce.
  6. Not sure that this has been discussed yet but the Denver Post reported that Pillar was a "trade possibility" to the Rockies. I would love to see Smoak, Pillar, Stroman and Sanchez dealt.
  7. When I read tweets like that I have to resist the urge to actually want North Korea to nuke our continent. It might be better to just start civilization over at this point.
  8. What is the proper way to deploy his talents? The super-bench role that Fangraphs suggested?
  9. Makes sense why that group would vote for him. Baines was hitting in the middle of a lineup for half the AL teams in the league for the better part of 22 seasons. Pulling that off in itself is going to impress players and other baseball types who are sure to envy a career like that. Those 22 seasons coincided with the careers of nearly everyone on the list too. The problem is he was a bad fielder/DH type who never even hit 30 homers in a season. Racking up counting stats is pretty much the only thing he ever did and he still didn't even hit any groundbreaking milestones like 3000 hits or 500 homers.
  10. So does this mean Fred McGriff gets in now? If so does he go in a Jay?
  11. Baines is a really bad choice. Never got higher than 6.1 percent with the writers vote. Smith is also pretty bad but closers have a lower threshold.
  12. I read the stat pages that's about it. That site is a joke.
  13. Do the Jays have insurance on his contract? If so Atkins' comments that he's not healthy enough to play make even more sense.
  14. Would love to see these two get dealt along with Pillar.
  15. Agreed. Bunch of mediocre pieces for a year of a premier player.
  16. Assuming Greinke would net a paltry return, I think I'd rather trade for Greinke at 3 for 105 than Corbin at 6 for 140.
  17. Keuchel at 4 for 80 million would not be a bad deal at all. 20 million AAV seems like a lot but it isn't what it used to be. I think it'd be a very solid Russell Martin-like deal where years 1 and 2 would provide some nice surplus value and the final year wouldn't be that big of a disaster. The only question for me is the timing right. I'd almost prefer they wait a season before signing a deal like this.
  18. Yeah you're right. I'm not looking ahead far enough. What I've said still applies but for 2019 only really. But you raise a good point. 2019 and beyond is likely going to be a better year for us than 2018 will. Thornton fits into our timeframe to compete more than Diaz does.
  19. Yeah if he's Seth Lugo the trade is fine. I'm kind of warming up to it as is. Some of your posts on Diaz having reached his ceiling and declining from here on out makes sense as well.
  20. Yeah that could be which means they must REALLY believe in #1 (unlikely) or #2 (seems more likely) because Urena SUCKS. Gurriel playing a decent SS would be a great development. I really hate Urena though. He's just Ryan Goins type org depth and nothing more.
  21. That article does more to praise him than it does trash him...
  22. So the Jays FO must think one of a few things: 1. Tulo will be back 2. Gurriel is capable defensively at SS 3. They like Thornton more than Diaz and will try and pick up another SS this offseason If #2 pans out that would be great for the franchise. The FO could simply be counting on a combo of all 3 occurring next year though.
  23. Eric Longenhagen gives Thornton a lot of praise. Thinks he's a SP who can gives us 120-130 innings of 4.00 FIP. If that's true though, then why did Longenhagen never put him on the Astros Top 20 list? Seems like a pitcher with projections like that should be ranked pretty damn high. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/astros-and-jays-both-win-diaz-thornton-deal/
