General 2018 Blue Jays Discussion Thread

In this debate someone brought up Mike Trout. Mike Trout plays 158 games a year, other than the time he jammed his thumb. Immediately after jamming his thumb surgery was performed and a complete time table was released, and he came back within the time table, and never came near the "re-evaluation" stage. https://www.mlb.com/angels/news/mike-trout-out-6-8-weeks-with-thumb-injury/c-233196466 We'll see what happens. I suspect "Vlad re-evaluation day", July 8th, will pass without news. During the all star break and futures game people will start wondering what the heck is going on. There won't really be any news, other than he is working with trainers. Mid August it will be apparent he isn't playing another game this year. He will have surgery and be back May 2019. He won't be the same. OK. That's a bad news case. Hopefully I'm wrong. I'll be happy if I'm wrong and proven an idiot. I will admit it, and enjoy Vlad coming back early July and marching on to finish 2018 strong and start his Hall of Fame career with an ROY season in 2019. -

I'm not arguing over semantics. I'm not puffing out my chest. I'm not trying to pretend I'm all that smart. I just don't think anyone is understanding the serious of this injury. I just think it's hilarious, how you all think this is just "Vlad out four weeks with jammed thumb". Normal injury in which guy comes back and everything is OK "The MRI revealed a sprain in the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) of Grichuk's knee and he is expected to miss the next three weeks." No talk of re-evaluation. Even after Donaldson's original calf strain he didn't immediately get sent for re-evaluation. He didn't reach the re-evaluation stage until struggling with it for a month. -

Board - "Olerud363 some say you are the most annoying poster. We will re-evaluate this statement in 7 weeks" Olerud363 - Thank god. Re-evaluation. I'm going to be re-evaluated. I won't be the most annoying poster. When my re-evaluation comes in 7 weeks the news will only be good. I marked it on my Calendar. August 15th. The day of my vindication. The day everything will be OK. The day the results of my re-evaluation will be announced, and it will only be good news. I am not annoying after all. My family was wrong when they told me this. -

Donald Trump (early 2017) - We are going to re-evaluate our commitment to the Paris Climate Accord. Environmentalist - The Donald made a surprising announcement. He is re-evaluating the accord. No details or a timetable, but re-evaluation can only be a good thing. The environment is saved. Everything is good. Donald will probably announce greater support for the Climate Accord and Carbon reduction. I love re-evaluation so much. It is only good news. -

Board Hive Mind - 'A mean man said re-evaluation is a bad thing. Little Vladdy doesn't have a time table, they don't give any details on his injury, but he's headed for re-evaluation. We all know there is nothing to worry about. They didn't give us a timetable because everything is OK. He is due back 1 hour after his re-evalatuion' Olerud363 - "Umm... dudes... normal injuries have a time table and details... think about it. Doesn't this "re-evaluation" thing bother you?? in the least??" Board Hive Mind - "Ignore the bad man, Ignore the bad man." -

This is great news, according to the "Positive Pete's" on this board, "re-evaluation" is a good thing and shouldn't raise any flags or concern. Vlad Guererro re-evaluation July 8th - "Vlad is on the plane to New Hamphsire, after the future's game he will be sent to Buffalo and you all see him in Toronto on April 11th 2019" Josh Donaldson re-evaluation July 17th - "Josh is heading to Buffalo to do a rehab assignment with Vlad. It's a good chance for them to meet up, because we will resign Josh and him and Vlad will be the leaders next year as they both fight for the MVP" (Your boss tells you, you will be re-evaluated in 3 weeks) - Honey great news I'm going to be re-evaluated. Honey - "Awesome let's put in a pool." (Your Girlfriend tells you, you will be re-evaluated) - Wow. She must really love me, I'm going to buy a ring. -
Is it just me or is Gibby reached a new phase of relief management?? I seem to remember him always pulling non-closer relievers after they gave up a couple of hits... However a few weeks ago Tepera gave up a bunch of hits against Phillie and Gibby just went out there and told him to get the f***ing job done... Now Oh puts a couple on, gives up a homer that has to be pulled back, and Gibby is nowwhere to be seen. Kind of like he's not longer going to care about a couple of bad pitches and just let the guys get the job done. Or maybe no one else was available... or maybe he just forgot to have someone else warming up.
-
the re-evaluation is scheduled for July 7th. You will all be justified in calling me an idiot the morning of July 8th assuming there will be a news conference live from Dunedin, and Vlad will not be there, because he is on the plane back to New Hampshire to play week of July 9th, and then appear in the futures game the next week.
-
Juan Soto I'll give you. We'll talk about me being an idiot when Vlad actually comes back. What are you guys thinking?? Then when they "re-evaluate" him in July they will announce "We have done the re-evaluation. Vlad will be back in the lineup tomorrow, he will then proceed to continue hitting .400, and crank a bunch of homers to win the eastern league MVP, Sorry for the interruption."
-
What are you talking about with Trout?? He played 159 games a year, every year, he's only been on the disabled list once. what the f*** is wrong people's math skills... 157/162 = .97x or something. I'm not going to bother with a calculator. Trout does not really miss time. He plays, and the only time he missed was 2017 when he hurt his thumb.. but he came back quick given the injury. They said "Mike Trout out for 8 weeks". No ******** about being re-evaluated. He came back right on time. 1 injury in 9 years. Every single year he's played 98% of his games.

No one seems to understand that a pristine injury history is extremely important for a prospect. While you all go to town on ******** reasons prospects fail (like Travis Snider's "hole in the swing"), very few of you understand injury history. Travis Snider had repeated wrist problems, not a hole in the swing, a bad f***ing wrist that got him in the end. Brett Lawrie had several injuries that ruined his career. Even going to back a ways Eric Hinske had a hamate issue that stunted his growth. Travis D'arunaud... Nick Johnson was the greatest hitting prospect ever until injuries got him. On the other hand guys like Pujols and Cabrerra, and Frank Thomas, who had the 20s we wanted Vlad to have, had pristine injury histories in their 20s. Vlad's injury is significant. it's a bad thing. it's a red flag. Sorry if you can't deal with it. His career isn't over. I don't think his leg will fall off, but like Nick Johnson, he may never have his great years. Johnson skipped his awesome 20s stage, and went right to Frank Thomas 30s stage. Vlad might to. Expect occasional glimpses of brilliance, extended absences, and extended periods where he's a bit injured and not hitting like he could without injuries.
-
I am not overreacting, so many of the Jays top prospects have crashed in 2018, Vlad, arthritic knees, have halved his career production (he has been moved from Frank Thomas 1990s version, which he could of been without the bad knees, to Frank Thomas 2000s version in a blink of an eye)... Bo has gone from potential batting champ, to not barely .280... so sad. Now Kevin Smith was the only hope.... Sort of a awesome power hitting short stop with mad D skills, and .300 average... KLaw crushed part of the dream... this extra 0/3, a statistical screw up could be the straw that broke the camel's back.

It's hilarious. Check out the Alex Verdugo question. Literally two guys slamming the original poster for opposite reasons. Hello - First time caller long time listener can we trade Happ for Alex Verdugo?? Reply1 - Alex Verdugo is almost as s***** as Harold Ramirez. You my friend are an idiot. Reply2 - No. Just No. The Dodgers would not do that. Your question is so stupid that I will not even give you an explanation. If I did give you an explanation (which I won't) I'd explain that J.A. Happ is a third rate veteran starter worth very little, and that Alex Verdugo is a prized prospect, a lefty hitter who will be the next Tony Gwynn, the Dodgers are not stupid enough to trade a legend for the mediocre Happ.

It was a completed game, and it's gonna end some careers, as they messed up the stats completely. For example Kevin Smith did not play the entire game. He was not there April 15th. He did not go 0/5, however his season stats have been trashed (should be .340 but is at .319 instead) because he has unfairly been given someone else 0/3. Clemens did not play the entire game either. He may have got someone else's hit, or he may have got someone elses 0/3... I don't know. Unbelievable sloppy trash. Someone else started (not Smith, or Clemens) and they need to correct the box score.
-
Exactly. This is why it could franchise altering if an unfair 0/3 is tagged onto his line. His final average could be .297 instead of .303 and instead of being a top prospect, the industry will label him a failure.
-
HUGE problem with Kevin Smith. Yesterday they completed a game from April 15th. Smith was in Lansing so could of not of started. However Smith was credited with an 0/5. Not possible in my mind. http://www.milb.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?gid=2018_04_15_dunafa_sluafa_1&t=g_box&sid=milb If you look at all of Smith's numbers they are down. I recall he was hitting .340-.350 at some point in Dunnedin, and was .330 yesterday, but now his rolling average peaks at .328 and is listed as .313 yesterday. I believe what happened is Smith went 0/2 in the completed game but they gave him someone elses 0/3 (that idiot Warmoth maybe). Then they tagged it on to his season stats, so he has an 0/3 he didn't do. Am I correct?? Is Smith's prospect status being gipped??
-
Rowdy Tellez and Jake Bauers have the exact same season stats. Their career stats are close too. However their career projections are far apart... Tellez - Fat guy, Crazy girlfriend. Peak Projection - September callup in the next couple of years, hits 2 homeruns. Hit's 25 more homeruns in the minors as a 28 year old. No more callups though, too fat. Likely Projection - Hits 11 homeruns in Buffalo. Rotates among i90 IL teams. Someday hits 11 more for Syracuse. Floor - Cut from Buffalo soon for not running out pop-ups. Stealth ban from organized baseball and never seen again. Bauer - Peak Projection - Line drive hitter, great defense, sneaks into lower half of top 10 in average, could develop 20 homer power. Think peak Lyle Overbay. Likely projection - Mitch Moreland. Floor - Mitch Moreland Of course these are not official projections, just what I hear on TV and the message boards. Why so different for such similar players??
-
Yeah, but for 2006-2008 he was slightly negative overall.

This happened with Russ Adams and Aaron Hill. Adams came first, was a terrible short stop, but Hill was moved to second to accommodate him. By the time they decided to move Adams, it was to late to move Hill, and they went with John McDonald at short. Despite his reputation McDonald was below replacement for the most part https://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=395&position=SS Maybe in this day and age with shifts and creative defensive alignments (Russel Martin playing everywhere), they don't have to be married to certain guys at certain positions. Perhaps it doesn't even matter as much which guys you define at what position, you can simply put your best defender at the most important place in the shift. Maybe all these infielders coming up, are just infielders. If Smith is the best infielder, he just plays as deep as he can, at the spot where the data says he's needed most (ie short stop, short right field, up the middle, where-ever)

Javier Baez seems to make it work.

I did not at any time say that Vlad was getting his leg amputated. I said this is a serious injury that could effect his career substantially. It's a tendon injury which could someday need surgery. He is in the same place as Ohtani. Mike Scioscia, like you board members is very positive. https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/angels-manager-mike-scioscia-on-reiters-block-i-have-not-heard-tommy-john-surgery-is-a-possibility-for-shohei-ohtani/ However you board members were very sad when Ohtani got on the DL with ulnar colateral ligament problems. Because you have heard many stories like this, most of the time they go for the TJ. Vlad is in a similar situation with his knee ligament. Except all you positive people don't really understand it. Neither do I, but I know that strained ligament, that will be "re-evaluated" isn't a good thing. Health is an attribute, Brett Lawrie, Travis Snider, Travis D'arnaud, did not have that attribute, injuries weakened them and destroyed them. (Snider f'd his wrists, Lawrie a bizarre combination of injuries, and D'arnaud the same). There is now evidence Vlad Guerrero jr doesn't either. We will see.

So was Aaron Judge and Josh Donaldson, and Ryan Howard and Kevin Youkalis and all kinds of others. He's got a .480ish career on base percentage and is all of a sudden hitting for decent power again. What percentage of guys who make it to this stage make it to the majors? What percentage actually become something?? Chip Cannon didn't. Some of the other guys were drafted pretty high. Who are the most similar career minor league players to Ryan Noda?
-
My point was in a given year I don't think he's "under-rated". He comes 1st or 2nd in the MVP race, and who cares if he doesn't win. Cabrerra had a triple crown, Donaldson was almost as good, led the league in RBIs and runs, and led the blue jays to their first title in 20 years. Over a period of years it's much more dramatics. He's almost double the next guy, over the last 7 years. Not sure what's so wrong about that opinion... unless you think the MVP, should just be turned into an fWAR leader award.
-
I'm not sure he's that under-rated. He's come first or second in the MVP race every year, except last year when he was injured. I don't think the MVP award, should be just automatically given to the fWAR leader. He lost to Cabrerra (triple crown), and Donaldson (only .5 WAR behind league leader in runs and rbis, led Jays to first playoff appearance) and won a couple of other years. I guess you could argue that he's underrated because some people still think it's "arguable" who's the best player in baseball. In a given year, he might be ahead 10 WAR to 8.5 and narrowly lose the MVP. Over the last 7 years.. well https://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=y&type=8&season=2018&month=0&season1=2012&ind=0&team=&rost=&age=&filter=&players= OK, he's underated. Since 2012 he's beat the next guy 60-35 (second best is still Donaldson) and you still have guys "arguing" that Mookie Betts could be better.

And what about Gurriel?? Why would Warmoth make the cut and not Gurriel?? Gurriel was just as a high a profile signing (28 million dollar Cuban Free agent, vs 20th round choice) and has done more so far. Gurriel looks to have some power, and contact skills, useful as a utility guys on defense, though his plate discipline leaves something to be desired (so far).
