  1. If one of these guys becomes SO good that you cannot keep them off the MLB roster any longer, the solution to this "problem" is to trade Chapman, or relegate him to super utility duties and demote Biggio or Espinal.
  2. The worst player on this team is Grishuk, who might still provide positive value. The next one after him is a toss up between Espinal, Biggio and some faceless #8 BP pitcher. Let that sink in for a moment. This team has come a long way from granting 1,000+ PA a year to Ryan Goins and John McDonald types. That, over anything else is a sign this team is legit.
  3. This trade is a good litmus test to see who is just a prospect-hoarding reactionary on this board. There is no one given up in this trade that would have provided much value to the Jays heightened level of contention over the next 3-4 years. And they can be easily replaced in future drafts during that time. The Jays take a mild hit in farm system rankings but when your team is basically set for the next three years, farm team rankings don't mean much.
  4. Yup, just saw that after I had posted ha
  5. I am very happy with this trade. Makes me feel good that in what seems to be a buyer's market (Oakland, Cincinnati), the Jays finally got the piece they needed off the discount rack. This is ultimately what I wanted as well, to shore up the defense. Yeah the BP stunk it up for the first half of the year last year. You know how NOT to fix that issue? By putting below average fielders at every infield position which is what would have happened with Guerrero at third and Freeman at first. That being said, even with Chapman, I have absolutely no qualms with acquiring Freeman or Schwarber if the price is reasonable.
  6. As a Jays fan, I definitely see the value of keeping star Yankees off the field
  7. Only Harold Reynolds could construct a lineup where in a Schwarber scenario the two lefty bats in the lineup are hitting 5th and 7th lol. But hey Gurriel's well protected in that situation!
  8. Case in point. The quickly developing war between ties versus ghostrunner is a much better Lord of the Flies scenario for this forum than anything politically charged right now.
  9. Avert your eyes Laika and Terminator. Look at all of these ties!!! https://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/CHC/ Even one up to 2016! How did Cap Anson survive playing on AND managing a team involved in 6 tie games in 1887?
  10. And teams like Tampa couldn't develop a bullpen on a shoestring budget. Win win. Instead of releasing relievers before they head to arbitration, teams would actually have to pay for the quality ones.
  11. Coming from a guy who was deeply immersed in the politics section of this forum, they are making the right move here to limit the political talk. Everywhere else I go on the net is absolutely poisoned with partisan politics and various recent world events. This is the one place that is truly devoid of that. Just like you could say people's political opinions are being muzzled, you could also say people's right to ESCAPE from politics and focus on Jays/baseball are being trampled on if it went too much in the free speech direction.
  12. And baseball is still skirting around the real issue that is causing all of these problems that Manfred is trying to band-aid over with dumb ideas. Stop having each team employ 30+ pitchers on its roster throughout the course of the year. The Jays had 38 pitchers last year. In the 1991 season, same 91-71 record, they had 20. Limit teams to 20 pitchers in a year. Your #20 guy needs surgery? Too bad, you're throwing your shortstop on the damn mound. You should have used your roster spots more wisely. Games won't go 18 innings because teams won't have an army of generic arms that can throw 98 at max effort for 15 pitches then ship them out the next day for the next set of generic arms the next game. The three batter rule won't be needed because roster limitations will force teams to develop more Rich Gossages and less Randy Choates, just naturally.
  13. Olerud's asinine example notwithstanding, realistically it'll be like 1-2 ties a team per year. The NFL occasionally has ties and it does fine. Baseball has had plenty of ties in the past. The integrity of the game won't be ruined because they aren't going to start giving away participation points like in the NHL then have a home run derby afterwards.
  14. I don't want to go against the science of Fangraphs but I feel a lot of these are off. Especially the AL West where I see the Angels, M's and Rangers doing better than their estimates. Tigers too. Reds, Pirates, Rockies way worse. I know it's difficult to project a 100 loss team but those ones are likely headed there.
  15. It's funny because I don't view the Orioles as a near-100 loss team anymore but because of the division they are in, they are scheduled to be pounded into the ground and last place in the AL once again.
  16. http://mcubed.net/mlb/tor/tb.shtml 5-8, averaging 5.5 runs for 4.7 runs against over the last two years. Because of course that's how this team operates...
  17. Had no choice trying to squeeze those games lost due to the lockout.
  18. Even if Canada had completely lax policies it wouldn't make a difference because of the U.S. policy. It would be a situation where you come on in to Toronto for a three game set then have to miss several games going back to the U.S. under quarantine. Not worth it except for very limited circumstances. For instance, it's mid-September and the team is neck and neck for a playoff spot against Toronto and the next couple of series are against scrub teams. So what I'm trying to say is that it pretty much doesn't matter what the Canadian government policy is.
  19. Agreed. If they are THIS dead set against marathon games, just invoke a f***ing tie after completion of the 12th inning. Not that damn hard.
  20. Such a ridiculous take, especially from a player presumably not spending his off season in America. When it comes to baseball's regular season, I'm taking May, June, July, August and September in Toronto, Chicago, Boston or New York over anything south of Pittsburgh. April and October are toss-ups and if you're playing in November you should feel happy to be playing anywhere in November. Hopefully his agent helped in educating him about this continent's climate.
  21. Nah, nothing I've done on there indicates that I am a Jays fan. Though I suppose they do know my country of origin. I have to admit I could be too old school. Manoah may have no shot not because of insufficient talent, but baseball is just not played in a way where pitchers of his lack of experience gets anywhere near enough innings to be considered the top pitcher. I'm betting he's a freak though. We'll see.
  22. Now if you trade away/for draft picks, would the slot money even come with it? Or is that negotiated separately? There are some very baseball specific circumstances where teams trading AWAY draft picks are doing to in order to hoard the best possible young talent, not give it away.
  23. 50 to 1 odds he wins. I put money on my long shot bets. The fact the my bookie even had him available out of 29 selections shows that someone, somewhere is thinking the same thing I am.
  24. There should be something written into the CBA where if there is a work stoppage in the future, teams and players are still allowed to make contact regarding injuries. Maybe through contact solely with team doctors. Because the fact that this is just getting out now, and this surgery is happening now, and he will miss part of the season when that could have been substantially or entirely avoided, is f***ing ridiculous.
  25. I don't think being the LA Clippers of baseball is going to do any good for the sport. Just my thought personally. Not every major North American sports league has to do everything the same as every other league. The reason trading drafts picks didn't come up is probably very simple. Neither the players nor the owners are all that interested in it.
