Yeah that really sucks. He was awesome to watch. Definitely looked like he was going to be HoF worthy. I drove down to Buffalo to see his last minor league start in 2010.

Yeah agreed. Would make him a 15-20 start pitcher in the second half and who could pitch in the Postseason. Would keep him healthier and at least you get him pitching in more meaningful games in September and October. I don't think making him a bullpen arm is ideal. Sure it limits his innings but think he would be more valuable as a starter who makes 15-20 starts per season in the second half.

Yeah agreed. His legacy is on the line and he wants to be known as one of the best, if not best players to have played the game. Heck even be known as one of the best athletes ever.

Yeah with Ohtani being a two-way player for the next decade at an elite level, we're talking about him being one of the best athletes of all time across all sports. This news really sucks as a fan. If he just hits for the rest of his career, he'll still put up amazing numbers but yeah definitely he loses that allure. He just becomes a regular player.

Yeah great to put things in perspective. I'm more bummed as a baseball fan more than anything else. Not sad or upset that he's losing out on more money. The man and his family are set up for life. He probably doesn't even need to step onto an MLB field again, and he'll bring in millions from sponsors. He's still going to get paid this offseason regardless and likely will be the highest paid player in baseball.

I would introduce a "load management" strategy when it comes to him pitching. Would start building his arm up in mid-to-late June so you can have him at full strength in the second half and for the Postseason. Limit him to 15-20 starts each season.

Maybe moving forward with him, once he starts pitching again, only start using him as a pitcher in the second half, so you have him at 100% down the stretch and for the Postseason. Kind of like what the Astros did with Roger Clemens in 2006. So Ohtani only makes 15-20 regular season starts. If he signs with a team like the Dodgers, they could easily accommodate that.

He probably should get away from the Angels organization haha. He's still going to get paid a huge contract whether from the Dodgers or Yankees. He's going to surpass Aaron Judge's contract easily IMO just as a bat, and the rest of the contract will be creative in terms of pitching bonuses and possibly an Opt-Out after year two or three.

Yeah I said the same thing. Judge's contract is the benchmark IMO and he should easily surpass that given his age and potential. Ohtani even just as a bat will still get a $45-50M base salary over 10 years that probably will include performance bonuses on the pitching side. He's still going to make huge money this offseason and IMO will be the highest paid player in baseball despite the injury news.

I would use Aaron Judge's contract as a benchmark, if you focus Ohtani as just a bat. Though you probably want him to play a corner OF spot until he pitches again. Definitely will have performance bonuses on the pitching side. Could see him wanting an opt-out after year two or three like you said as well.

He'll probably still become the highest paid player in baseball even with the pitching injury. Aaron Judge signed a 9-year/$360M contract last offseason, which works out to $40M base salary every season. Ohtani easily should get a $50M base salary even just as a hitter. He probably signs for 10-12 years most likely, so he'll get longer term than Judge. Probably will be a clause in his contract that if he pitches again, he can receive performance bonuses starting in 2025 for how many starts, innings pitched etc.

If the Leafs don't win a Stanley Cup in the next five years, they never will. You have one of the best cores in place in Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Taveras, Reilly etc. Gotta hope they could go on a big run. So far I've liked Treliving's moves this offseason adding some toughness in Bertuzzi and Domi without sacrificing offense. As well, signing Matthews to this extension at least gives the Leafs a clear direction and stability over the next 5 years as they know they have their best player to build around.

Great deal for both sides IMO. Matthews is here for another 5 seasons, so that gives the Leafs a window to hopefully make some noise in the Playoffs. You'll still have Matthew in his prime years so no worries about his age or any regression. Also, gives Brad Treliving enough of a window to build this team into a Stanley Cup contender via free agents, trades and draft picks. Matthews only signs a 4 year-extension so nothing crazy long term like 8-10 years. He'll become a FA by the age of 30, so he'll still have an opportunity to earn big money and a contract if he keeps up his high level of play and especially if the NHL raises the salary cap which by then will definitely be more. As well, gives Matthews one last chance to try to lead the Leafs to the Promise Land. If he fails, he can leave and sign somewhere else. If he wins here in Toronto, he'll likely earn a huge payday after from the Leafs or another team once he becomes a FA.

I still think he'll become the highest paid player in baseball, even if he can't pitch for a year or two. But yeah definitely did cost himself possibly 200 million or so if he can never pitch again.
