    If Ross is back in 2025 I’m moving firmly into the Fire Shapiro camp. Ross as been on the job almost a decade. The team is a luxury tax team 9 games under 0.500 with a league worst farm system. It’s completely unacceptable.

    Very surprised at how many of you are fine throwing 250-300M at a fat defensive butcher 1B with a career 132 wRC+. He'll be 27 when the extension kicks in. This type of contract, for this type of player, has typically been a sunk cost by like the first third of the deal. I could see if we had reason to believe he was going to be more of a 150-160 wRC+ guy over at least the first half of the deal, but he hasn't been that player and doesn't project to be. Very Blue Jays to get tunnel vision on this one guy instead of focusing on what else competent management (fingers crossed) could do with 300M.

    If he’s a 160 wRC+ bat going forward that’s a special hitter and someone you want to lock up. The problem is that his career average, 2024 season, and projections are all in the 140 range. He’s a good, useful player at that level, but not irreplaceable. I’d give him Matt Olson or Freddie Freeman money - paying him like he’s a 3-win player or so with a bit of upside to beat that. Everything I’ve heard seems to indicate that he’s looking for something like twice that though. That has disaster written all over it.

    It's not so much that the fans will understand that he's only worth 3 WAR. It's that letting a 3 WAR player (now - who knows what he'll with another few years of physical decline) go instead of giving him a massive contract should result in more wins down the road, which is really all that matters when it comes to driving fan interest. This isn't a Mookie Betts situation where losing him hurts the team meaningfully on the field going forward. It's Mark Shapiro's job to convince ownership not to let a fear of 1-2 years of fan backlash lead to a 12-year mistake. Hopefully he's up to it. I do agree with you that he won't be traded now, or this offseason. I think they'll ultimately avoid the massive extension. But I also think they'll pay a significant opportunity cost by not moving him now, either getting very little next year at the deadline or walking him to free agency and getting nothing.

    Has there ever been a situation before where a team couldn't move on from a 3-win player for fear of massive backlash from the fanbase? Maybe like late-career Derek Jeter after he won like 8 rings or whatever? Winning drives fan interest, and extending a mediocre 1B at enormous money based on reputation is bad for the team's odds of winning in the future. Keeping Vlad out of fear of fan backlash is how the team gets saddled with a Chris Davis/Ryan Howard contract - a deal that seems necessary at the time, but ends up as a massive sunk cost.

    I don't think this fanbase is dumb enough that trading a 26-year old Christian Walker without the defense instead of paying him 200M+ would be so catastrophic to the bottom line that it isn't feasible to do.

    Yeah. I'm guessing Baltimore is thinking they're not tendering Mullins a QO and paying him ~8.5M next year. Mountcastle is a bit different in that he actually has a bit of value, both this year and next at his likely arb salary. Not really sure who they have tabbed to play 1B vs. LHP.

    Imagine being not even remotely interested in listening to offers on a 3 WAR 1B who is a year from seeking out a 200+M FA contract.

    Yeah, L54 is right - this is basically what I've asked jaysblue to stop doing (which he's done).

    Vlad has a 138 wRC+. He's been healthy, playing to projections, and isn't really underperforming his x stats. All of that and he's on pace for 3 WAR because he's already a massive liability at 1B and on the bases. If the team has a chance to get impact players for him now they absolutely should. Don't walk him to free agency. And don't be the team that gives a 3-WAR 1B 250M or whatever. Dude is built like Bert Kreischer and isn't going too get more athletic into his late 20s.

    I can't believe we're talking about this team talking a shot at winning in 2025. What pieces are even in place? C - Kirk 1B - Vlad 2B/1B - Horwitz 3B/2B/S - Kiner-Falefa SS - Bichette LF/2B - Schneider CF - Varsho RF - Springer DH - Util - Clement SP - Gausman SP - Bassitt SP - Berrios SP - Rodriguez SP - Basically 0 good pen arms. This team sucks. There just aren't enough MLB pieces. Fire Atkins and then retool.

    I didn’t mean because you’re too negative. I meant because most people here are at least speaking the same language regarding player value when they disagree about things and you’re on an island ignoring things like contracts and player performance when you share your ideas. Cleveland didn’t trade Cliff Lee’s career, or the last 5 years of his career to Philly. They traded a year and half, at a time when they were rebuilding. Getting like 1200 innings of a great #2 starter is like a 90th percentile outcome in a deal like that. Inarguable. Unambiguous.

    I don't even think he'd return that TBH. 83 wRC+ the last calendar year. I don't think teams will be willing to pay for him as anywhere close to a 4-win player. He's completely nuked his value, and might actually just suck now.
