  1. I found the comment on a starter interesting. I wonder if that is in addition to JJ if they retain him, or to replace JJ if they don't. AA also seemed to imply that when team doctors see JJ in October they will assess if he's fully healthy or not. If so, the team will probably qualify him. If not, they'll let him go. The one thing I've noticed the last few years is that when AA hints that he's not happy about something, he does something about it. He wasn't happy about the bullpen, he fixed it (probably went overboard, but that's another argument). He wasn't happy about the starting rotation, he did something that should have fixed it. Now it appears AA is unhappy with team defense, and I have to believe he's going to do something about it. I don't know if Goins will be the 2nd baseman or someone will be brought in, but I will be surprised if JPA is the catcher. I also suspect that Gose will make the team and Melky will slide over to DH or be traded.
  2. Bonds did as well
  3. The earth LOOKS flat when you look in the distance from the ground. When you embrace more advanced science, you learn that your eyes deceived you.
  4. That might be going a little too far. A metric doesn't have to include every part of the offense to be situationally useful, but if you have a metric looking at one aspect like batting average (basically hits) it had better actually tell you something about the value of those hits rather than assuming that a home run is of the same value as a single (for example).
  5. And batting average doesn't truly measure the hits. That's why it's overall a bad stat, it fools you into drawing the wrong conclusions.
  6. We seriously need to have every single guy in the lineup practice bunting before they're allowed to take swings in the cage each day.
  7. I'm not so sure there's an erosion of skill as much as a balancing out between adjustments made by Jose and by the league. His true talent level is probably the 130ish ops+ we've seen the past 2 years. That may erode slightly going forward, but I doubt it'll be significant for a few more years.
  8. We really need a new outfield coach ... or smarter outfielders. Jose is the only one who can throw the ball in the right area code.
  9. I wonder if they could build some sort of raised platform they could place a few inches above the grass, and put the turf on that when the Argos play? Football games are spread out enough it's not like they'd be making the transition continuously.
  10. Honestly, the only two guys on that list that I think are of any interest are McCann and Ruiz. Most of the rest are basically backups at best. McCann is an incredible fit, with (according to the metrics) plus defense, elite pitch framing, and he's a middle of the order lefty power bat. I was surprised to read some articles recently saying that McCann's defense wasn't too good, and that he'd be a better fit in the AL where he could transition to the DH role over the next few years. Since I don't watch the Braves on tv, I don't know if that's true or not. The metrics don't seem to agree.
  11. Even if he was perfectly healthy, it would be hard to ask him to go 200 innings when he hasn't thrown more than 60 in 5 years. 20 starts is probably about all you could ask.
  12. It'll be interesting to see Jeffress in the 9th. He was putting up big numbers in AAA.
  13. Lind is going to see nothing but lefties late in games the rest of the season with the expanded rosters.
  14. Man that was a short swing by Eddie. Very pretty.
  15. Unbelievable that fangraphs has Lawrie rated as a negative defender this year.
  16. lol, I was just looking at that
  17. Yup, 0.6 WAR when he went down http://www.fangraphs.com/leaders.aspx?pos=all&stats=bat&lg=all&qual=0&type=8&season=2013&month=4&season1=2013&ind=0&team=14&rost=&age=0&filter=&players=
  18. If Miley wasn't awake before, he is now.
  19. Edwin the lethal weapon strikes again. He's really gotta stop doing that.
  20. Lawrie and Rasmus are a 2nd baseman's worst nightmare.
