    Oliver may very well have requested to stay here (I'm assuming unless it was back to Texas). As for Davis, if we don't plan to re-sign him again then I agree it's stupid not to move him, especially with all the injuries teams have right now (although perhaps he was claimed by a team trying to block someone else and offered nothing).

    Even worse, to do it right you have know the trajectory of the ball and the placement of the fielder before it was hit (and this is information we won't get until the introduction of fieldfx).

    Stats like xFIP aren't really designed to suggest how well the pitcher has pitched for a particular team, stadium, or league. They're designed to attempt to place all pitchers on a level playing field (by only taking into account data that the pitcher has somewhat direct control over) and evaluate how well each would have performed relative to each other if they faced the exact same batters, in the exact same parks and leagues, and with the same defense behind them. We can't use xFIP to tell us what Dickey's numbers SHOULD look like this year pitching for us. To do so is a misapplication of the statistic. You would have to take something like xFIP as a base and scale it based on the ratios for the teams he's faced along with park factors and team defense factors or something.

    Somehow I lucked out and missed this thread the other day, but I would like to say that I encourage people to come up with ideas for new stats, etc. If you think you found something that could work, compare it to other stats and advanced metrics, find it's strengths and weaknesses, etc. Think about why it succeeds or fails in certain areas. You may learn something in the process, or you may stumble across something interesting in which case everyone learns something.

    If Buehrle avoids that really bad start he had, he's probably going to provide surplus value even with the big contract. I was concerned about him in the AL East, but overall he's doing just fine.

    They should just have Gose bunt every single at bat. As soon as the fielders come crashing in, let him push it over their heads.

    Apparently the Jays are mostly going to use Cecil against lefties the rest of the season (as much as possible). They want to ease his workload. His one batter and out today may have been more to do with that than saving him for game 2.
