I know I am saying the same thing over and over again.  But not impressed with the early returns on Soriano.

His stuff on TV looks amazing.  Like 99 with crazy movement.  Then he just doesn't get the swing and miss you'd expect, and invevitably there's inning with 1 walk and 3 singles and he can't get a k when he needs.

What am I missing?  Is this just bad luck ?  Is he going to be a sinker monster that can be elite with 8ks per 9 and massive ground ball rate?   Just seems the contact inevitably leads to inning with clustered contact, and no k when he needs it.

a solid #4 starter at worst, that's still valuable;  we'd all like 5 Dylan Ceases'

Right.  But should be able to get a #3 or #4 without giving up so much prospect capitol.  Develop or sign.

Considering what they gave up for him, I think this is a case of feeling that Soriano has another gear in him. Same logic behind giving Cease what many considered an overpay last winter but knowing the underlying numbers and maybe tinkering with his pitch mix can lead to better results. Soriano and Spaghetti felt like more 2027-beyond trades rather than 2026 trades. The Jays making a small run in August clouded that a bit.

What's he wrong about exactly?

He hasn't been that impressive.

Considering what they traded he needs to be more than an average rotation starter.

I'm sure they see him as a bit of a project that they think will get better, but so far it hasn't been good enough.

He shows flashes, but he always has. There's a real question of whether he can be consistent.

Sub 2 ERA since mid July

I remember during the offseason, someone on here mentioned his name about signing him as a depth arm or something. Would have been a nice arm to have this season.

Give him an offseason/spring to work with the team and lets re-evaluate.

Either way, good pickup to help solidify the rotation going forward

Yes exactly. Kinda early to tell, he was best pitcher in all of baseball the first month or so, last outing showed signs of brilliance (before imploding) lol. Young and controllable, very good pick up anyway I think. Maybe not a true #2 necessarily but damn if we had a full rotation it would be some good…just hope there is baseball next year

This is a must win.  If we win and guardians lose, chances of playoffs remain high.  If we lose, the season is likely over.

Must win series for sure. Gotta win today first.

On the Year he's 32nd in SP fWAR and 24th in RA9 WAR 3.5... going into Arb at 2.9M meaning he's a bargain for a few more years, GTFOH with that nonsense.

Soriano has been outright dominant at times. I think a huge reason why his ERA is inflated is due to his manager having little to no feel for when to pull him from games. I can recall 2 or 3 outings when Soriano was obviously struggling to command his pitches and the opposition was having a field day in the later innings. His relievers haven't been doing him a lot of favors with preventing inherited runners to score either.

Given the bullpen situation not sure there has been too many it was obvious you needed to pull him.

Seems like a few times he's been cruising with a low pitch count then gives up a few singles and doesn't have the swing and miss to get out of it.

Like I believe a couple times they had to pull in the 5th (Philly and Cleveland), a couple in the 6th (NY and Tampa, and once in the 7th (65 pitches an no hitter headed to the 7th).

I think in all of these cases he was cruising, and there wasn't time to get the bullpen ready before had 3 or 4 guys on.

Seems like this is just what a guy with 6 ks an inning and medium walk rate will do.   Contact and walks lead to baserunners in a hurry.   Maybe he'll get better.

The most recent example was the perfect game that completely unraveled third time through the order. Soriano was repeatedly making mistakes in the danger zone and the opposition was crushing the mistakes. I think Schneider was asleep at the switch and waited far too long to get someone warming in the pen, and this immediately led to 4 runs scoring in that inning. I also recall a previous game where Soriano was brought back to begin another inning despite already having thrown something in the neighborhood of 95 pitches, and he immediately proceeded to load the bases without recording a single out. This created an impossible situation for the bullpen and eventually all 3 runs crossed the plate.
