The bullpen looks pretty taxed right now, but Varland and Fluharty should hopefully still be available. Even if it means working three days in a row, their pitch counts have been low enough that you could probably use them again if needed. Rogers I’m not so sure about.

Flu, Rogers and Varland are probably in the "break glass" category. At least there's an off day tomorrow

Bateman has been a surprise after almost everybody called him a nothing burger for Gausman

I mean was he even in the top 10 on the cubs prospect list?  Fangraphs ranked him #30 with a Future Value of 35+ before the '26 season.  Fangraphs also did a post trade report on him but didn't update the FV but they did give him glowing remarks for his plate discipline, less so on his outfield reads though and adding the Jays might be able to improve his reads given their history of doing so with other players.

We have to wait and see.

It's interesting that the Fangraphs writeup is so lukewarm on Bateman's defensive game. He hasn't been faced with many tough plays yet but to my eyes the breaks look very good and he possesses elite physical tools in the outfield as well. The early Statcast break and jump results are highly positive with only the route component dragging him down a bit. I had a quick look to compare his jump and break results to other elite center fielders and Bateman rates very positively in comparison. He is producing massive jumps in the early going of his career with 4.3 feet above average/39.1 feet covered. For comparison's sake MLB's best outfield defender PCA has been producing jumps 4.8 feet vs average/39.5 feet covered so Bateman isn't far behind.

Same, I was surprised as well but maybe that's why we can't totally rely on our eyes.   Interesting on the jump and route stats - never looked at those before so I'll check them out.

On the Catch Difficulty Scale he's only had one 5 star attempt (5% catch probability and he didn't make the catch) zero at the 3 and 4 star difficulty level, many at the 1 and 2 level.   So we need to see more

Damn the club essentially decided to keep Waldron vs Tiedemann.

The team might need innings today and every time until they get a 5th starter.

Tiedemann needs to be handled with kid gloves and thats not a luxury this team has until the September call ups.

Little might play with a bit more purpose now that his kids life hinges on whether he can deliver.  One wrong pitch and it’s over.  Public school or private school.  Bug infested rice with PC brand ketchup or caviar with heinz.  Salvation Army or Gucci.

Hoping to get couple good months out of him before click strikes midnight. Aka Davis Schneider. Travis Snider played like Tony Gwynn for 2 months.

I think Bateman has a high floor as he displays fantastic athleticism in the outfield with a ready made center field defensive toolset. The ceiling remains to be determined as of yet and if he's a legitimate plus defender in center field this drastically lowers the bar of necessary offensive output for him to be a solid contributor moving forward.

Weathers is prone to big innings

Maybe they'll tag him third time through or something
