I still want to know why Smith was playing so deep at third in a bunt situation. Did JS think that the Phillies wouldn't play to tie it up at home? Wtf is going on?

Utterly brain dead.   Team has a lot of stupid folks from top down and it shows in their on field play when they repeat the same mistakes.

I mean we took 2 out of 3 but with 5 teams ahead of his it's almost like you can't afford to lose any games.

The playoff odds are still dropping even though we are playing a little better.  I think they went from like 8% to 6% and lower obviously after today.

The playoff odds are just essentially the chance of a 1/15 semi-miracle where Jays go on an insane run, or the other teams weave a weird needle where they all stay a couple of games under .500.

Every week neither of those things happen we are closer to the end.  A bad week we are that end.  Could be Over Thursday.  We will see.

I mean it is over, as in a once every 20 years thing would have to happen, but could over in a 1 in a million before long.

The Hoffman deal was the sell side of the hybrid type of TDL

Yeah I realize that, but the guy had been dominant for nearly three months, wasn't a pending free agent, and losing him severely weakened the Jays bullpen given the lackluster options they have to replace his innings.

Anyways, what's done is done. I just hope the stud pitching prospect they got makes me eat my words sometime in the next 3-4 years.

They will replace him next season. Here are the free agents next year. Some pretty decent options in there:

Andrés Muñoz (club option), David Bednar, Aroldis Chapman (mutual option), Adrian Morejon, Ryan Helsley (opt-out), Kenley Jansen (club option), Bryan Abreu, Emmanuel Clase (club option), Pete Fairbanks, Carlos Estévez (club option), Jason Adam, Raisel Iglesias, José Alvarado, Emilio Pagán (opt-out), Blake Treinen, Alex Vesia, Garrett Whitlock (club option), Matt Strahm, Shawn Armstrong (mutual option), Kirby Yates, Evan Phillips, Paul Sewald, Danny Coulombe

Playoffs will be difficult to make but we still get it done I think

had a W right before that string too though and were 7-3 over the previous 10. That's about as good as it's going to get.

"Just win series" and they'll be right there playing for a wildcard at the end.  Sure, a nice 30 game stretch like the Red Sox just had where they're running like a .550 babip would help....

Yeah the Hoffman trade was the biggest hit on the team IMO if they were to go on a late run this season. Not easy to replace his arm at the back end of the pen, especially the way he's been pitching since May.

Would have been nice to keep Varland/Rogers and Hoffman all together, but understand. Let's hope the pitching prospect they got is worth it!

I have to think we'll use the money Hoffman was owed next year to bolster the bullpen. We could really use a stud lefty who can get lefties and righties out.

Until then, we'll get a look at some other guys to see if we have anything.   As Olerud correctly points out, this season is over unless there's some miracle that happens once every 15-20 times.

I appreciate fans want to hold onto hope.

I truly cannot believe all the whiners complaining we traded Hoffman, after months of whining that he sucks and can’t be trusted.

Dude is a mid-30s reliever making 10+ mil for this/next year, hasn’t exactly been reliable in the 1.5 seasons as a blue jay, and been getting boos from the home crowd for the last few weeks.

As someone pointed out, there are tons of FA relievers available this offseason that will likely put up better numbers.

For the record I didn't once say that Hoffman sucks and can't be trusted, and as far as I can see I'm the only one in here wishing they hadn't traded him. Or at least I'm the one bringing him up as I watch the bullpen get stretched to it's limits.

I also said "it is what it is" and that I hope Dasan Hill amounts to something, so I'd hardly call it "whining". But, whatever floats your boat I guess.

Yesah we're at the point where if we get swept in a series (especially if it's a team were chasing) it's pretty much game over

So.... Keep winning them :)

I could understand the Hoffman trade better if they had managed to get payroll under the penalty point for the draft.  Then it would be Hoffman + a guarantee of a top 10 pick if they don't play well rest of way.   Seems though from what other posters are saying, that is not the case, and they at the mercy of lottery balls and if it doesn't go there way they could be picking 18th or something off a bad year.

That would have been nice - but I don't think that's the reason to keep him.  We got 3 prospects for him and can simply use the $11M we were going to pay him next year to sign someone else in the offseason.

Dasan Hill might be the best prospect we acquired at the deadline.

Nobody is complaining. I simply said trading Hoffman at the deadline hurts more if the Jays end up making a late run, because they don’t really have another late-inning reliever with that kind of swing-and-miss stuff. Hoffman was giving them a 14.12 K/9 with a 2.50 FIP.

That’s different from Gausman, who they replaced with Soriano, or Varsho, where they can still run out Sanchez, Bateman or Straw without completely falling apart at the position. Hoffman’s specific role and stuff are much harder to replace internally. Unless someone steps up like Miles, Fisher or Estrada in the late innings.

Correct - if we go on some amazing 1 in 20 run, we're going to miss Hoffman.

I think he's just pointing out how ironic it is that there have been several fans claiming Hoffman cost us the World Series and that he has cost us the playoffs this year, etc.  There's never really been a shortage of fans hating on Hoffman at any given time.  He's been the scapegoat for awhile now.

We trade the guy and suddenly, there's people commenting about how much he is missed.

It isn't necessarily the same people making those 2 comments, but it's still kinda funny.

The hypothetical magical run will need leverage relievers for 5 day stretches.   And we already saw a first attempt at a magical run being thwarted (3-2 over last 5) because the leverage relievers were not perfect and tired.

You never though what combination of misfits could help pull off a magical run.  Last years late June to July 8th run that gave Jays the division lead had Chad Green, Jason Bruihl, Hoffman, Sandlin, Little, Rodriquez, Estrado (4 inning relieve appearance), Fisher, Ryan Burr, Fluharty all pitching (and pitching well) in close games.

Don't get me wrong.  The relievers were fine over the last 5 days.  Just that to pull a miracle off your going to need multiple 5 days stretches where they (including the no-names) are almost perfect.
