This is our first site that is primarily used by Canadians. We went in with eyes wide open, but the numbers are below even our modest expectations (in revenue per user, not overall users, that number is good).

Are a bunch of you using ad blockers? I'm not here to convince you to stop or anything, I'd just really like to narrow down possible reasons for this site being so far underwater compared to all our other sites. Before I go chasing my tail, I'd like to check one possible reason off my list.

And don't fret or anything, this site is going nowhere, even if it keeps losing money. We're not the kind of organization that just shutters something if it struggles a little bit.

Thank you for your honesty in this poll! And really, I'm not going to be upset if people answer yes. In a way, it's actually reassuring if this is the answer to my woes.

I'm both.  If on my phone or personal device, I don't use one.  If I access (from time to time) during office hours my work has a blocker.

Ah, thank you. I added a third option, this hadn't crossed my mind.

That's probably what happens for me as well?  I think?  I don't even really know.  I'm looking now and I do have some shoe advertisement showing up on a portion of the screen - it just changed to a Moores ad - so I guess maybe I don't have ad blocker on at work?   I don't even notice the ads to be honest.

I think I voted wrong Brock - and it doesn't appear I can change it.

Yeah I did some Googlin'

Per capita ad spend in Canada is like 75% lower than the US

Advertisers pay less to get the ads so the views and clicks or whatever aren't worth as much

This is because Americans are slobbering buffoons who buy more things that are shoved in their faces on advertisements. Canadians are wiser and less impulsive

If you can see your data in pennies per ad view it might show this

Just think of us as a loss-leader

Your money making sites will benefit from our traffic and high quality content. Somehow. I'm not sure how. Somehow.

It is, for sure. And we expected that. But we're seeing 10% of our US rates, which is so much lower than is reasonable.

Wow, that’s nuts!

I don't know about everyone else, but I'm pretty immune to ads these days.  It's probably been years since I clicked on an ad I see on a website.  I guess there's some subliminal effect - but the website doesn't get paid if I decide to go look at shoes 3 days from now because I've been looking at shoe ads on this message board all week.

Maybe I have PTSD from all the pop-ups that blew up my computer when I was a kid.  News flash - there is no MILF down the street who wants to chat!

we've largely been able to keep the opponent fans off this site which is glorious.  i'm sure the Sox site is filled with Yankee tards

Good ad providers aren’t pay per click anymore. We get paid for impressions, not clicks.

Not really, mods have 100% license to ban any opposing fans the moment they cause trouble. It’s why we try to keep each site siloed; this is a place for Jays fans to be biased about their team without outside nonsense.

I'm in the US and it's a mix for me. If I'm on my phone, then I probably see ads (don't really pay attention either way), but if I'm on my laptop then I have an ad blocker so it won't be visible.

Maybe have a products section for the website with some Amazon affiliate links (to Amazon Canada obviously). I'm sure lots of people would be more than happy to click on an affiliate link before making Amazon purchases to help support the site.

We're planning to change our subscription model a lot, hoping that will encourage more participation.

But, again, we're not super-worried about it at this point. Mostly, right now I'm just wondering WHY it's happening.

The amount of ads I see when im not using a blocker (not just here) makes me want to hang myself.

Weird that Canada would be so different

Isn't there something about International fees or something, I read that on a fangraphs flagged banner? I could be misremembering something about that.

Yeah, this is the gist of what I read.

I use an ad-blocker, but I'll turn it off for Jays Centre from here on out if it helps.
